Amazon.com launched their own PC game download service today ( via Shacknews ). Their front page boasts "over 600 games at $9.99 or less," but unless you're actively searching for a $10 Bejeweled clone, you might want to save your money. No top tier games from any genre are available yet, but there are plenty of obscure titles like Build-a-lot 3: Passport to Europe and Mr. Biscuits Private Investigator: The Case of the Ocean Pearl.
With respectable music, movie, and book download services already established, it's not surprising that Amazon has entered game distribution as well, but it's disappointing they've started so half-heartedly. It won't displace Steam, or even Good Old Gamer , as your go to online game retailer any time soon, but the store is still in Beta -- there's still the chance of bigger things to come.
