All the buzz surrounding new releases like Wall-E and Dark Knight didn't help DVD and Blu-ray this past holiday season. Media Control GfK International says video games outsold both mediums in 2008.
Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that game overtook DVD and Blu-ray for the first time this past year, hitting $32 billion thanks in large part to the Nintendo Wii. In comparison, combined DVD and Blu-ray sales could only muster $29 billion, a dropoff of six percent.
Both ended up underperforming though. According to GfK's forecasts, games were expected to grow 22 percent (they only grew 20), while DVD and Blu-ray were supposed to grow 1 percent. Instead, GfK is now predicting that the disparity between the mediums will continue to grow over the next year. Not fun news if you're in the movie industry. Maybe The Watchmen will help?
