When Platinum Games (made up of key members from Capcom's now defunct Clover Studio) announced its first title was an over-the-top intensely-violent beat-em-up exclusively for the Nintendo Wii, I must admit I was a bit surprised, and even more skeptical. With the exception of Suda 51's No More Heroes , the land that Mario built has not exactly been a hotbed of adult-oriented action games. After spending several hours making my way through the mostly monochromatic (blood excluded) streets of MadWorld , I must say that the gamble certainly paid off.
MadWorld's aesthetic can be compared to Frank Miller's Sin City series. The colorless environments play to the strengths of the Nintendo Wii; since it's simply not capable of matching the high definition visuals of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, the designers have crafted an impressive art style that is both simplistic and stunning.
