Nielsen has posted an interesting study that measures how long and how often gamers play their consoles. Comparing the three major console in terms of minutes per session, Xbox 360 leads the way with 78 minutes, followed by PlayStation 3 with 64 minutes and Nintendo Wii with 58 minutes. Although Xbox 360 gamers play longer, PS3 owners play more frequently; PS3 gamers averaged 2.42 sessions per day, followed by 2.15 for Xbox 360 owners and 1.78 for Wii owners.
So what's the conclusion here? Well, PS3 and 360 gamers play a lot. Wii owners play a bit less. Whether it's because there are a higher percentage of casual gamers playing Wii or whether it's due to arm fatigue (half kidding) remains to be seen.
Keep in mind that the data was taken from a sample of 17,000 households. It's an interesting guideline and conversation starter, but hardly the stone-cold truth. Statistics are an inexact (and sometimes funny) science.
