Nintendo Boss Sets His Sights on Wii Surpassing PS2's Worldwide Sales

Sony's greatest success in the game space is most certainly the PlayStation 2; it's sold an obscene number of consoles across the world and clearly cemented Sony as the winner last generation. As daunting as the numbers it posted are, they didn't stop Nintendo president Satoru Iwata from talking about the Wii and DS surpassing the PS2's final install base in an investor briefing (via MTV Multiplayer ) on the company's third quarter financial results. Looking at life-to-date sales for the Wii, Iwata said, "Wii has been selling at industry's record pace so far, and with new customers acquired by the gaming population expansion efforts, it is not impossible for Wii's total sales to exceed the final install base of PS2." It's an ambitious goal that remains quite far away, but the same can't be said for the DS. At least, not exactly.
