Nintendo's Trademark for "Wii" Name Goes Far Beyond Gaming

Nintendo may like to think that the Wii will make people smile, but they likely weren't smiling when they learned that a dental surgery practice in Malmö, Sweden were using the same name as their console. Christer Wihlborg, one of two partners who runs "Wii Smile," says that the name came from the first letters of his surname, and because there were two of them. Ironically, it sounds like a similar train of thought which lead to the name of Nintendo's console in the first place. Regardless, the duo opened their operation a full year after the launch of Nintendo's hit console in 2006. What is most interesting about all of this is that the trademark and name similarities were not the only reason Nintendo decided to take action. But apparently, their 2006 trademark not only applies to their home video game console, but to dentistry as well. I guess Nintendo likes to make people smile, in more ways than one.
