Square Enix Files "Dragon Quest Wars" Trademark In US

Square Enix USA has just applied for a US trademark for "Dragon Quest Wars". While a new Square Enix trademark filed outside Japan is not unheard of -- the recent "Front Mission Evolved" and "Final Fantasy Haeresis XIII" spring to mind -- a traditionally Japan-centric series like Dragon Quest getting a new US trademark does seem unusual. "Dragon Quest Wars" doesn't seem like an appropriate trademark for any existing property in the series, so we have to imagine it represents an entirely new game. A DQ strategy RPG? An RTS? Perhaps there's a connection to a persistent rumor making the rounds on Japanese mega-messageboard 2ch, which claims Square Enix has been working with a prominent Western developer on an open-world Dragon Quest spinoff for next generation platforms? Only time will tell. (link)
