DJ Hero Controllers Now Available Separately Through Online Store

You can now purchase DJ Hero 's turntable controller separate from the game. Hurrah!
See, Activision didn't make it a cheap endeavor to for players to engage in local multiplayer for DJ Hero . The plastic instrument was only available as part of the $129.99 bundle, not separately. It prevented players from picking up a cheaper controller and bringing it to a friend's place. A little over a month since DJ Hero 's launch, however, and that problem's solved.
You can't just head over to GameStop and pick up a controller, though. For the time being, Activision is only offering the turntable controller at the online Guitar Hero Store for $69.99 .
The separate controllers are currently available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii. DJ Hero was also released on PlayStation 2.

Tennis Star's Girlfriend Purportedly Broke-Up Due to 7-Hour MW2 Sessions

So word has it that Scottish tennis star Andy Murray has split up with his long-term girlfriend, Kim Sears. Condolences aside, this is not normally a story I would give a second thought to, but the purported reason behind their break-up caught my attention.

A report by The Sun, which has since been removed, says that Sears called it quits after he developed a habit of playing Activision's Modern Warfare 2 for seven hours a day.

A source told the paper, "She felt she was playing second fiddle to [the game]. There are a number of reasons for the break-up. But computer games did factor." Murray's agent, meanwhile, defended his client by claiming "Andy doesn't play computer games any more than any other 22-year-old," which MCV adds makes "seven hours a day seem about right."

Oh well. Break-up aside, one supposes things could have been worse for the athlete.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Modern Warfare 2

Yet Another Mystery World Premiere For the 2009 VGAs

At this point, all of the world premieres for the 2009 Spike Video Game Awards are getting us excited. And now, we have yet another promo for a new, mystery title set to make its debut.

Second Mystery World Premiere for the VGAs...

What game could it be? Well, Twitter user Superannuation is pretty sure the game is Black Lotus, an upcoming action title developed by United Front and Treyarch and published by Activision. With the VGAs less than two weeks away, our anticipation is certainly building.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Treyarch, Activision

Mystery World Premiere Trailer Number Deuce

I really hope these "mystery" games end up being triple-A quality games and not just some random junk. I guess we will have to see on December 12th when the VGAs air on TV.

See it for your self below

A lot of speculation is going around on this one, some thinking it could be The Agent, Stranglehold 2, True Crime, Necessary force or a sequel to The Getaway, but a lot of dug up information seems to point to a title that Activision has had in the works for a while, Black Lotus. Originally Black Lotus was being developed by Treyarch but then handed over to United Front Games when Treyarch began to work on Call of Duty: World at War.

Quite a mystery to me, if I had to guess I'd put Black Lotus on the top of my list. I could be wrong but we shall see on the 12th. Be sure to tune in and watch the VGAs on Spike December 12th.

Let us know your thoughts on the Mystery Teaser.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Treyarch, Agent, Stranglehold, The Getaway, Activision

Call of Duty Classic Coming to XBLA and PSN This Week

The original Call of Duty is set to hit Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this week. Major Nelson confirmed it will hit XBLA this Wednesday for 1200 Microsoft Points ($15). TVGB reports that Activision has confirmed it for PSN as well, coming on Thursday for $14.99. We weren't sure if the marketing partnership with Microsoft might make it hit XBLA first, but that apparently isn't the case.

If you balk at paying the fifteen bucks for an old game, keep in mind that if you picked up the Hardened or Prestige editions of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 , the downloadable title is free. Just check for a download code somewhere among the remains of the box you hastily ripped open after the midnight release.

Activision outlined their December DLC plans for both Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero this morning. A selection of 13 new tracks will be made available for download throughout the next month or so, including songs from Taylor Swift, Nada Surf, and OneRepublic, among others.

Each track will be offered in discounted bundles as well as singles. Individual songs will set you back about $1.99 (160 Microsoft points; 200 Wii Points), save for the Steve Ouimette recording of "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" -- that one's on the house.

DS | Call of Duty franchise sales top $3 billion

Modern Warfare 2's $550 million opening helps boost Infinity Ward, Treyarch-developed FPS series' total global sales beyond 55 million units.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 smashed more than just game-industry records upon its launch for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in November. Generating some $550 million within its first five days on the market , the Infinity Ward-developed first-person shooter sailed past top earners within the film and book industry, giving Activision cause to lay claim to the title of "biggest entertainment launch in history."

Modern Warfare 2's sales likely got a boost on Black Friday.

Activision has now provided some perspective on just how big Call of Duty has become. Over the holiday weekend, the publisher announced that the Call of Duty franchise has pulled in more than $3 billion at retail worldwide, according to industry-tracking groups NPD, Chart-Track, and GfK, as well as Activision's ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Call of Duty, Activision, Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 2, Treyarch

Activision and Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 topped unit sales rankings in the UK for the third week in a row, despite slowing sales of the title, Chart-Track said Monday. Unit sales of the game dropped 32 percent during the week ended November 28, but it was still enough for Modern Warfare 2 to hang onto the top spot on the all-platforms chart, the tracking firm said. In Modern Warfare 2's opening ...

Activision Announces Call of Duty Sales Surpass $3 Billion Mark

You can bet that Activision is pleased with themselves right now. Very pleased.

Why so pleased? Surely you jest. Just this morning, they announced that the Call of Duty franchise, bolstered significantly by the enormously successful recent launch of Modern Warfare 2, has generated over $3 billion in sales. The franchise has over 55 games to its name, which makes the figure easy enough to believe.

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Activision Chief Executive Officer Robert "Bobby" Kotick in a statement. "If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Call of Duty, Activision, The Mark, Modern Warfare 2, Bobby Kotick

Activision: Call of Duty Franchise Surpasses $3 Billion

Activision Blizzard said Friday that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 pushed sales of its Call of Duty military shooter franchise past $3 billion and 55 million units worldwide. Activision cited internal sales estimates and third-party figures from tracking firms NPD Group, Chart-Track, and Gfk. Modern Warfare 2, released on November 10 and developed by Activision-owned Infinity Ward, generated around $550 million in its first five days worldwide. The original Call of Duty was developed ...

News: Valve: boycott Steamworks, miss out

MW2 sold an "awful lot", says Holtman. Valve has said that digital distributors who boycott PC games because they ship with Steamworks services are missing out. Business director Jason Holtman was addressing concerns aired by Direct2Drive, Impulse and Gamersgate, all of which decided not to sell Activision's Modern Warfare 2 because integrated Steamworks tools acted as a storefront for Steam. "To our minds, we think that if you're making a good game and it's got the services a customer wants it should get out in as many channels as possible. If you have a good portal and you're good at collecting money from folks, and attracting them, there's no reason why you shouldn't be," Holtman told GamesIndustry.biz.
Analyst Says CoD DLC Could Generate Up to $140M in 2010

We all know the Call of Duty franchise is popular, but just how popular? So popular that its DLC alone could rake in more money than many other games make in their entire retail shelf life. According to Broadpoint AmTech analyst Ben Schachter, downloadable content for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 could generate up to $140 million for Activision in 2010 ( via IndustryGamers).
"As with the last two CoD titles, the game itself should maintain its $60 launch price until the next iteration (due in large part to the value of its online gameplay)," Schachter said. "But Activision will also benefit significantly from the high-margin DLC potential enabled by the packaged product's success. We estimate that Activision will generate at least $100mil-$140mil in gross revenue from Call of Duty DLC in 2010."
And it may not just be the usual run of additional map packs (which we already know are coming) that'll help fill Activision's ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Call of Duty, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Australia May Ban Modern Warfare 2

Modern Warfare 2 could end up being another casualty of Australia's game ratings system after release. Its status in that country is being threatened by the same elements that are at the very center of Australia's ratings controversy.

The South Australian Attorney General is attempting to appeal Modern Warfare 2's MA 15+ rating – about equivalent to the ESRB's T for Teen. Despite the Australian games ratings board's sensitivity to violence in games, Modern Warfar 2 got this rating despite retaining the infamous "No Russian" mission.

Success in revoking the rating would effectively ban the game in Australia. If that happened, an edited version would likely appear without "No Russian," similar to how Activision willingly released the game in Russia or what happened to Left 4 Dead 2 in Australia.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Modern Warfare 2, Activision, Left 4 Dead 2

Guitar Hero to get paid-for service too?

We know more "Hero" games are on the way, but Activision may have another revenue stream in the works for their popular music franchise. A wide-ranging Seattle Times interview (via Plastic Axe ) with Red Octane co-founder Kai Huang turned toward the question of a monthly subscription service for the game's downloadable content. "That's definitely one of the things we would love to do," Huang said. "There are a lot of issues around music licensing. Customers want it; I know I want it. We're trying to make that happen."

A subscription-based service like Rhapsody would certainly be a big win for the franchise if priced right, providing fans with a large catalog of playable tracks while giving the company a consistent revenue stream. The statement that they're already looking into it suggests the possibility, though Huang was right to point out that such a setup runs into difficulties when it comes to getting the ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Guitar Hero, Activision, Kai

Wii | Tony Hawk talks Ride sequels

Q&A: Pro skater indicates work on next installment has begun at Robomodo; hints at snowboarding, surfing titles in the pipeline for skateboarding controller.
After several tepidly received iterations , Activision is hoping to reboot the Tony Hawk skateboarding franchise with the release of Tony Hawk Ride. The latest title in the long-running series shipped November 17 in North America and arrives in the UK and Germany on December 5. It includes a proprietary full-sized skateboard controller where players can mimic skating moves thanks to its in-built accelerometers and infrared sensors.

Tony Hawk is game to ride again…if Activision is.

Unfortunately, Tony Hawk Ride doesn't come cheap, bearing a hefty asking price of £99.99 in the UK and $120 in the US. Potential purchasers not dissuaded by poor initial reviews can take some comfort knowing that it probably won't be the only game Activision plans to ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Activision, Tony Hawk: Ride

Band Hero (DS)

With three portable iterations of Guitar Hero currently on store shelves, it was inevitable that Activision would introduce the full-on band experience onto Nintendo's popular handheld -- but how well does it work? Reviewer Megan Watt tried her hand at the DS version of Band Hero, but the lack of a career mode and On Tour's infamous hand-cramping peripheral really hurts the overall experience.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Band Hero, Guitar Hero, Activision, Nintendo, DS

PC | Modern Warfare 2 PC first-week sales top predecessor

Outcry over removal of dedicated server support can't stop latest Call of Duty installment from a faster start than original Modern Warfare.
Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 faced its share of pre-launch controversy. Above and beyond a contentious level in the game's campaign mode, many PC players were particularly peeved with the game's lack of dedicated server support .

PC gamers who had been vocal about a Modern Warfare 2 boycott went into stealth mode when it came time to pick it up.
While boycotts were threatened and more than 220,000 gamers signed a petition asking developer Infinity Ward to reconsider dedicated servers , sales of the PC edition of the game don't appear to have been affected greatly. In a post on the developer's official forums , community manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling revealed that, "The PC version of Modern Warfare 2 has actually outsold the PC version of Call of Duty 4: Modern ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PC, Modern Warfare 2, Activision

Activision Now Has Three Studios Working On Call of Duty Franchise

For the past few years, Treyarch and Infinity Ward have developed alternate iterations in Activision's Call of Duty franchise. But as the Los Angeles Times reports, Activision has now tapped a third studio to work on “future versions” of the series.
The new studio has not been identified yet, and it isn’t known what the future holds for the series in terms of expanding beyond its first-person shooter roots, but a source close to Activision told the LA Times that a Call of Duty MMO was still a possibility. Rumors of this drastic shift for the series date back to last year, so this latest news isn’t terribly surprising.

As for uncovering the mystery studio behind these future Call of Duty games, in due time I guess. Of course, Activision did just unveil its new Sledgehammer Games studio , which was supposedly tasked to work on a new game based on an existing Activision property, so that’s interesting.

Activision May Be Bringing In Third Call Of Duty Team

Having just cashed in on Modern Warfare 2 , it's fair to say that Activision wouldn't mind seeing even more Call of Duty. So it should come as no surprise that Activision has reportedly handed development duties for the series to a third team.

The LA Times is reporting that the publisher has "aggressive expansion plans" for the series. As a result, it seems that they've brought a third team into the fold, along with Treyarch and Infinity Ward.

Treyarch and Infinity Ward have been releasing games on alternating years since 2006, when Call of Duty 3 was released. With Modern Warfare 2 now on the market, Treyarch is now reportedly working on the next game in the series, which is rumored to be set in an era other than World War II.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Treyarch, Call of Duty, Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward

New Activision Studio Has A Name: Sledgehammer Games

Activision has officially pulled back the curtain on its new Foster City, CA-based studio, Sledgehammer Games, Gamasutra reports. The formation of the studio was first announced back in July when then Visceral Games executives Glen Schofield and COO Michael Condrey left the Dead Space developer to head up what would eventually become Sledgehammer.

“Both Glen and Michael have outstanding reputations in the industry through their work as GM and COO of Visceral Games, and as the leadership of the Dead Space development team. We are excited to add their combined 30 years of experience and expertise to our management team,” said Activision’s executive vice president of studios, Dave Stohl.

Sledgehammer Studios is currently busy at work on a new (obviously) unannounced title. When the studio was first announced, it was reported that the studio would be working on a new installment in an established Activision IP, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see what this ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Sledgehammer, Activision, Dead Space

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick is cashing in once again. Having recently sold 1.9 million in Activision stock to net $20 million, he sold 1.68 million more shares for another $17 million (via Gamasutra ).

Flush from the successful debut of Modern Warfare 2 , Kotick is selling the stock that was vested him back in 2000, when the price sat at a mere $1.035 per share. Activision's stock is now trading at $11.72 per share.

The stock price has actually fallen since August, which was the last time Kotick traded in his shares. That month, Activision was forced to slash revenue forecasts after Blizzard announced the delay of StarCraft II .

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Bobby Kotick, Modern Warfare 2, Blizzard, StarCraft II

We already knew about Modern Warfare 2 and its successful first day , but now the game has even more stats to show off. Edge reports that Activision claims the game has generated $550 million so far worldwide. In terms of units, analyst Colin Sebastian estimates 8.5-9 million copies were sold in the first week. "We also believe that the title is on track to meet or exceed our 4Q unit shipment estimate of 12.5M units," he said.

Unsurprisingly, the game is also beating out Xbox Live records. Kotaku reports that 2.2 million people played more than 5.2 million multiplayer hours on the first day. That averages to about 2 hours per player, but we're sure a handful of them played nearly all day. And, that initial burst of first-day play unlocked more than 11 million achievements.
