Japan Buying DSi LL Faster Than PSPgo, Ripping Them to Shreds

On Sunday, November 22nd, Nintendo's deluxe-sized DSi LL went on sale in Japan, and sales so far have not been too shabby, as Famitsu publisher Enterbrain reports that 103,524 units have been moved over the first two days. Compare to the roughly 170,000 DSi units moved in its first two days, and the 28,000 PSPgo units sold in its first day, and it looks as though the LL has LLegs.

And what are people doing with them? Dissecting them to see how they work, apparently. Actually, I can't speak for everyone there, but at least one person has done so. If microchips, circuitboards, and the backside of a D-pad interest you, then check out Kotaku's gallery here.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DSi, Nintendo

DSi LL Sells 103K in Japan in Two Days

The new, fat DSi isn't having quite the splash of its slim cousin, but sales from its first two days in Japan are impressive regardless. Kotaku reports that according to Enterbrain numbers, the DSi LL sold 103,524 units in its first two days on the market. The original DSi sold 170,000 units in the same time period, but at that point the enhanced online functionality and promise of DSiWare was an entirely new feature, so it makes sense that it spurred some more interest.

The PSP Go sold 28,000 units in its first day of sales in Japan, significantly less than even the bulkier, spectator-friendly DSi LL. Of course, it also wasn't an iteration of the DS, and Japanese consumers seem to consistently purchase every new version of that system. No wonder Nintendo keeps making them. If you want to see just how big the DSi LL is, check out our comparison gallery where we stack it against an original DS, a PSP, a netbook, ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DSi, PSP, DS, DSiWare, Nintendo

Japan DSi LL Sales See Strong Two-Day Total

Nintendo's larger-screened handheld, the DSi LL, hit retail in Japan on November 22, and while its debut can't quite match the DSi's launch, it's seeing better early numbers than the PSP Go did. According to Enterbrain figures translated by consumer weblog Kotaku, the DSi LL has sold 103,524 units in its first two days, compared to the 170,000 units the DSi sold in its first two days.
News: Foto Showdown coming to DSi

It's a camera-powered RPG from Konami. Konami has unveiled Foto Showdown, a new RPG which is played using the DSi camera. The idea is you take photos and the DSi uses "advanced colour recognition" to generate monsters from them. You can then test out their unique powers in epic battles. There are more than 100 levels to play through and over 150 monsters to collect. Players can fight with up to six monsters at once and they get more powerful with each battle they win. You can also upgrade their powers, buy better weapons, give them tools and heal them with medicine. The DSi's wireless functionality allows players to take part in multiplayer battles and swap monsters. On Monday, 1UP got a brand-new DSi XL (or rather, DSi LL, as it's imported from Japan) in the office, and after the shock wore off from the sheer size of it, we got to picture-taking. Here's a quick look at the XL (and its 4.2" screens) compared to some other popular electronics. (The photo above shows the American DSi box compared to the almost pizza box-sized package the DSi XL comes in.)

Thursday of this week is turkey day in the U.S., and Nintendo's accompanying downloads definitely bring plenty of goods for us to digest with a total of 13 new downloads. For WiiWare, we have Bit.Trip Void for 600 Wii Points ($6), the latest in Aksys Games' line of retro-inspired arcade shooters. Also available are Harvest Moon: My Little Shop for 1,200 points ($12), which seems to have the features of your typical Harvest Moon game at a downloadable price. Little Tournament Over Yonder for 800 points ($8) is a 1-2 player real-time-strategy game. Finally, Learning with the PooYoos: Episode 1 is an Early Childhood game for 500 Wii Points, targeted at teaching numbers, letters, and shapes for ages 3-6.

As promised , Super Mario Kart from the heady days of the Super NES hits for 800 Wii Points. This is the title that went on to spark the well-known series. Also gracing the Virtual Console is A Boy and His Blob: ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Nintendo, Mario, DSi

A real eye-opener.

We'll admit our first response to the news and initial pictures of the DSi XL was less than positive. We had fat DS units, we spent a mint getting smaller ones, so why would we want to spend cash buying a bigger one again?

Sony pulled off a two-pronged victory in Japan this week, as the PSP and PlayStation 3 captured the one and two sales spots, respectively, topping the typical weekly dominator, Nintendo DSi. Sony's PSP handheld sold 38,770 units for the week ended November 15, Japanese tracking firm Media Create said Friday. Its home console counterpart, PS3, secured a close second place with 38,498. During the prior week, PS3 outsold all other hardware with 48,925 sold during ...

Metroid Prime May Come Back to DS

The Metroid Prime series isn't dead yet, according to an Official Nintendo Magazine interview with Metroid head Kensuke Tanabe. "We are always planning to make new games in the Metroid Prime series," he said. "Depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realizing it on the DS or DSi." While it's far from a commitment to a new DS game akin to Metroid Prime Hunters it is at least an indication that they have sequels in mind and aren't ruling anything out.

This isn't the first time Tanabe has pointed to Hunters as an inspiration for the future of the series. A few months ago he mentioned interest in multiplayer for Prime, an oft-requested feature that only appeared in the DS iteration so far. Whether the future of the series keeps its multiplayer on the DS or moves it to the Wii, we at least know that Metroid: Other M isn't taking over completely for Samus' future.

Nintendo Working on Metroid Prime Hunters Sequel?

The Metroid Prime trilogy may have been completed, but it looks like the hunt may be just beginning.

In an interview with Official Nintendo Magazine UK, Nintendo's main man of Metroid Kensuke Tanabe confirmed that the company is working on new Prime games, and that "depending on the timing and the situation, we cannot deny the possibility of realising it on DS or DSi."

Of course, the Metroid Prime series also saw a multiplayer-focused edition hit the DS with Metroid Prime Hunters, so a new installment of that could certainly be in the works. Still, I think there's a different DS Metroid game that we'd all rather see.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, DS, Metroid Prime Hunters, Metroid Prime, Metroid, DSi

Analysis: Nintendo's DSi Sales Trends, Wii Price Cut Too Late?

[Nintendo's Wii price cut spurred a turnaround in Wii sales in October -- but why did Nintendo wait so long? In our Gamasutra-exclusive analysis, Matt Matthews examines the company's hardware trends.] Whereas Sony's console is doing well and its handheld is faltering, the story is nearly the reverse for Nintendo. The Wii had seen diminishing sales through the middle of 2009 while the Nintendo DS Lite and DSi maintained extremely strong sales. However, Nintendo's Wii ...

Nintendo DSis Pre-Loaded With DSiWare

Among Best Buy's Black Friday deals Nintendo is releasing DSis pre-loaded with DSiWare games later this month. There are two different sets that seem to be targeted towards different audiences.

One of them is a white DSi bundle that contains some of the more popular mass market software. It contains all three Brain Age express games: Arts & Letters, Sudoku, and Math. It also contains one of the Clubhouse Games Express titles – Card Classics. The last thing the bundle contains is Photo Clock.

The other bundle is a Metallic Blue DSi packed with Mario-branded games. It includes Mario vs Donkey Kong: Minis March Again!, WarioWare Snapped!, Dr. Mario Express, and Mario Calculator, and Mario Clock.

These are theoretically better deals than what originally came with the DSi. Anyone who bought a DSi between its April North American launch and October was given $10 worth of Nintendo points with which to buy DSiWare. The white Black Friday DSi bundle contains $28 worth of DSiWare games and the blue ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DSi, DSiWare, Nintendo, Mario, Clubhouse Games

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime Makes The Case For The Nintendo DSi XL

There's another DS coming early next year. It doesn't add any significant features the DS or DSi doesn't have, but it does feature a much larger screen. Why would someone want to pick up a DSi XL, then? Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime made the case for the DSi XL during the BMO Capital Markets "Digital Entertainment Conference" this morning.
"Its [DSi XL] purpose isn't just to make things bigger for the player, but to attract observers, as well," said Fils-Aime. "With an improved view angle, it begins to mimic the extended appeal of Wii. As more people watch the action, more want to get involved and in the process, new players are born."
It's the social DS. Would you use one?

Media: Nintendo DSi LL/XL Promotional Trailer

In case there was still any remaining doubt that Nintendo is trying to double-dip consumers who already bought a Nintendo DSi, here is the new promotional trailer for the handheld from Japan:

I think this makes it abundantly clear that they are not targeting Joe Gamer with this thing. Of course, I imagine that could conceivably change when it comes overseas, depending on how they choose to market it, but for now, it seems pretty clear to be a way to expand their market even further.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DSi, Nintendo

Japanese Hardware: PS3 Closes In On Leader DSi

PlayStation 3 sales appear to have stabilized in Japan following the early September launch of the new slimmer form factor -- and this week, Sony's console outsold worldwide unit sales frontrunner Nintendo Wii for the ninth week in a row in Japan. PS3 sales for the week ended November 1 were 36,061 units, just behind the typical weekly leader, Nintendo's handheld DSi, which sold 37,517, according to Japanese tracking firm Media Create. The UMD-less PSP ...

Hoping to stimulate downloadable Wii game sales, Nintendo is beginning a trial program offering downloadable demos for a small number of WiiWare titles, company CEO Satoru Iwata said in an investor Q& A. The program will begin later this month, according to an IGN report on the financial results briefing. Iwata acknowledged that the overall market for WiiWare and DSiWare, Nintendo's digital distribution services for its Wii and Nintendo DSi consoles respectively, is relatively small, ...

Nintendo Looking to Amazon Kindle for 3G DS?

Nintendo's DS reissue train will keep rolling, if President Satoru Iwata has anything to say about it. In an analyst briefing following the company's announcement of lowered financials and the new DSi XL, Iwata confirmed that the company is looking to a popular 3G portable device for inspiration...and it isn't the iPhone.

Only people who can pay thousands of yen a month [in mobile phone subscriptions] can be iPhone customers. That doesn't fit Nintendo customers because we make amusement products," Mr Iwata said. The Kindle's one-off cost would better suit Nintendo's customer base, he said. "In reality, if we did this it would increase the cost of the hardware, and customers would complain about Nintendo putting prices up, but it is one option for the future.

Could Nintendo be looking to equip their super-popular handheld with 3G technology in the future? Such a move would be in line with current rumors.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, DS, Satoru Iwata, DSi

Sometimes, the weekly Nintendo downloads are pretty sparse, with only two or three games to speak of -- but not this week. Nintendo offers up eight new downloads today, ranging from shooter classics to DSi photo apps. For WiiWare, we start off with Carnival King , a carnival-themed mini-game collection for 700 Wii Points ($7). "Aha! I Got It!" Escape Game is available for 500 points ($5), and features a little boy trying to escape various puzzle rooms put together by his father. And Family Card Games is another title starring Daddy, Mommy, Sarah and Billy, and features three card games: Daifugo, Speed, and Memory. It's up for 500 points.

On Virtual Console, the Sega Master System version of R-Type is 500 points. And in a somewhat strange move, Fighting Street is up on the VC today for 800 points ($8). The game is a TurboGrafx16 CD port of the original arcade Street Fighter.

PSPgo Hits 28,000 in First-Day Sales in Japan

The PSPgo launched in Japan on Sunday, and the results seem to be relatively mediocre. Andriasang is reporting, via Japanese tracking service Enterbrain, that the download-only console only sold 28,275 units on day one, despite a heavy push from retailers and downloadable releases of major RPGs such as Persona 3 Portable and Dissidia: Final Fantasy Universal Tuning. In comparison, the DSi's launch in Japan went far better, with the console moving 170,000 units in a two-day span last November.

However, one factor that may have contributed to the console's launch trouble was its launch date. Consoles usually launch on a Saturday, never on a Sunday. Even so, it'll be interesting to see if the PSPgo can get out of this funk.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Persona 3, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, DSi

Iwata Says DSi LL Meant to Be a Spectator Handheld

Usually new iterations of popular portable devices get smaller (anyone remember the Game Boy Micro?), but Nintendo is bucking tradition with the DSi LL -- a new version of their gaming handheld that adds an extra 1/4 of an inch to the screens. But that's not all it adds: According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the viewing angle for the DSi LL has been improved as well with the intention of making it a spectator system ( via Joystiq).
"Nintendo DSi LL features not only bigger monitor screens," Iwata said in a financial results briefing , "but an improved view angle on the screens to make it the first portable system that can be enjoyed with people surrounding the gamer."
The idea is to allow people next to the person playing to get a better view of what's happening on the screens, creating a "new play style where those who are surrounding the game player can also join in one way or the other to the game play." ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DSi, Nintendo, Satoru Iwata

"Rise to Heaven: Five Years of Nintendo DS"

This week, Nintendo announced the newest iteration of their ultra-successful handheld, the DSi XL, or as I like to call it, the D6L. And the timing was apt, as we are just a month shy of the fifth anniversary of its launch in North America on November 21st, 2004.

In some ways, it's kind of hard to believe that it has been five years, but it would likely be safe to say that a lot of people have a lot of memories invested in that machine, and it has definitely helped to change the face of Nintendo, as well as the face of gaming itself. Former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi said in February of that year that "if the DS succeeds, we will rise to heaven, but if it fails we will sink to hell."

Looking at Nintendo now, it's hard to dispute that they have indeed risen, and 1UP has taken a look back at the short but successful history of the handheld which managed to finally put the Game Boy, which itself celebrated its 20th anniversary this year, to rest. Check it all out in "Rise to Heaven: Five ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, DS, DSi, Hiroshi Yamauchi, 1up

DSi XL Size Comparisons and Video

The Nintendo DSi XL appears to be quite a handful, as the above image features a mock-up of the Nintendo D6L (it's just easier to type it that way) positioned next to a Wii case for a sense of scale. Yikes. We saw when it was revealed yesterday how big the unit is compared to its contemporaries, but being positioned next to the case just makes it seem even bigger, doesn't it?

More comparisons and a video of it in action after the cut.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DSi, Nintendo, Wii

Analyst: New Nintendo Portable Coming 2010

Yeah, you read that title right, and we're not talking about the DSi XL. On top of the news about Nintendo's redesigned DSi, Director of KBC Securities Japan Hiroshi Kamide expects 2010 to be the year of a new Nintendo portable.

"It's just not realistic for [Nintendo] to repeat what they did last year," Kamide told the Associated Press. "[2009 is] a bit of a filler year. Next year, I still suspect there's a new handheld turning up."

Kamide's suspicion isn't unfounded. Aside from whatever tactical promise 2010 holds, information about the new portable's hardware has also surfaced.

Earlier this month we reported on a contract between Nintendo and graphics-card manufacturer Nvidia to use their graphics-intensive Tegra chip. There are also rumors that the new portable will be backwards compatible.

With one new SKU already officially slated for 2010, will there really be room on the market for a DS successor? And if so, will that successor simply be a beefed up DS, or does Nintendo have something ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, DSi, DS, NVidia
