In-Depth at G* 2009: The West is Rising

G* is South Korea's answer to E3 or the Tokyo Game Show, a largely consumer-facing show with its own mini-conference and B2B section for those looking to make deals. The show took place from November 26-29, including two week days that were somewhat more business oriented, and a weekend for consumers to gawk at the latest goods. What makes the show different are the inherent differences in the Korean market versus the rest of the ...

Boycotters Be Damned, Left 4 Dead 2 Sells More Than 2 Million Copies

Despite the skepticism when Left 4 Dead 2 was announced at E3, gamers flooded to their wallets like a brain-hungry horde to purchase Left 4 Dead 2 . Valve announced today the zombie sequel has sold more than two million copies in its first two weeks of release.
At last count, Left 4 Dead , developed by Valve and published by Electronic Arts, had sold more than 3 million copies. Both games were published on Xbox 360 and the PC. Based on the sales data so far, it's looking like the sequel is actually on track to surpass the original.
According to Valve, more than a million players have logged into Xbox Live to play online and promised news on the first wave of downloadable content for Left 4 Dead 2 is "coming very soon."
I liked Left 4 Dead 2 quite a bit. With the game in the hands of everyone now, however, I really need to hop online and see what amazing strategies people have devised to make my life a living hell.

Media: Brink's S.M.A.R.T. System in Motion

PS3 Games - E3 2010 - Brink
The video above is a first look at Brink's "Smart Movement Across Random Terrain" system, which works like a cross between Assassin's Creed and Mirrors Edge. This is also the first time Splash Damage has released in-game footage.

Having only screenshots to go on until now, the game looks as gorgeous as advertised, and the freedom of movement offered by S.M.A.R.T. is a first for multiplayer FPSs.

As ever, there's that issue of having the game correctly interpret what you're trying to do. The developers show off a particularly tricky move where you can avoid a sensor alarm by sliding underneath it. It looks cool on video, but probably not as fun if you end up jumping into the sensors instead of avoiding them.

They also reveal there will be offline single-player, offline multiplayer, and online multiplayer modes, and players will be rewarded for spending time in any one of those modes with new items to customize their characters.

Let's hope Splash Damage has many more ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Brink, Splash Damage, PS3, E3

Splash Damage Releases New Brink Footage

		         Xbox 360 Games - E3 2010 - Brink

New Brink gameplay footage has arrived (via G4 ), depicting a game that's being described by some as part Mirror's Edge and part Borderlands . It offers a quick tour of the "Smart Freedom of Movement" system, which Splash Damage says will give players more freedom than ever before.

As in Mirror's Edge, the player will be able to hop over or slide under various obstacles, which Splash Damage hopes will put players in a more tactical mindset. They suggested that Brink won't be "on rails" like other shooters, and repeatedly stressed that the players won't simply be entering canned animations.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Brink, Splash Damage, Mirror's Edge, Xbox 360, E3

REVIEW: FIFA 10 Has Some Great Improvements, But It Still Dropped the Ball

What the Game's About
Year after year EA Sports releases the next iteration of each of their popular sports franchises. While Madden enjoys a monopoly, the FIFA series has to continually compete with Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer. The competition between the two series has caused EA Sports to continually seek improvements to the game's formula, and FIFA 10 brings some of the biggest changes ever seen from one year to the next in any soccer game. Unfortunately the game does suffer from a bit of two steps forward, one step back syndrome, but overall it feels as if FIFA 10 shows that the franchise is trending in a positive direction.

What's Hot
When I got a chance to meet with some of the EA Canada staff that were presenting the game behind closed doors at E3, I was told that community feedback and criticism was the driving force behind development decisions. Right away it's apparent that these comments were more than just run of the mill PR fluff. The biggest change from FIFA 09 to FIFA 10 is the ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts, FIFA 10, Konami, Pro Evolution Soccer, E3

Aonuma Has Much to Say About Zelda

It seems now as though a day does not go by that the overseer of The Legend of Zelda series, Eiji Aonuma, does not give an interview. Once Spirit Tracks is out, however, I'm sure we will hear little more than a few peeps from him before E3. But for now, here is his video interview with IGN:

Virtual booths and playable demos for Live, survey leaks.

Not (un)lucky enough to attend the man-filled E3 expo in Los Angeles next year? Well according to an online survey all the games, sounds and huge ankle blisters of the annual event will soon be making their way to Xbox Live (well, maybe not the last one) Click here to read the full article

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, E3, Xbox

Dress for Success

Obviously since you're a gamer you are particularly enamored by the world of high fashion. I mean, I know I see more of my fellow game geeks at Paris and Milan than I ever do at E3 or GDC. I mean, if the ESA is really serious about reviving E3 then they'll install a runway and spend the vast majority of the show getting us all prepped for the hottest fall wardrobes. And just in case you haven't stocked your closet full of the latest threads, we've teamed up with our friends at Glitch Apparel to make sure you look so hot as you blast your buddies during your next round of Modern Warfare 2

I Have Become Death

You remember that Halo match where you went on the ridiculous kill streak and pretty much single-handedly won the day for your team? Well even if you don't, why not don the Battle Rifle shirt to commemorate your (potentially imagined) achievement? This shirt absolutely screams, "I'm so hardcore; I know I can kill you before I even think about reloading." Oh yes, you will be feared.

But what ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, E3

Mass: We Pray a Dante's Inferno Marketing Stunt

Last week's satirical advertisement for Mass: We Pray, which featured cross-shaped motion controllers and gameplay modes like 'baptism' and 'ring the tower bell', has turned out to be another bit of sneaky marketing for EA's upcoming Dante's Inferno.

All of the game's marketing efforts have tied into the seven deadly sins. Back at E3, EA held a contest asking attendees to take pictures with booth-babes, which tied in with 'Lust'. EA also sent out checks to media outlets as a tie-in with 'Greed'. Apparently the Mass: We Pray advertisement ties in with 'Heresy'.

Seeing these marketing stunts fall flat, I wonder if the controversy EA is trying to raise is doing the game any good.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts, Dante's Inferno, E3

A Good (or at Least Fairly Decent) Look at Sony's Magical Wand

While Microsoft has been quite open with Project Natal, showing it to anyone who will look and taking it on talk show after talk show following E3, Sony has been much quieter about their unnamed motion control peripheral. In most cases, there isn't even a very good look at it to be found online.

That is, until now. Sony gave those in attendance at their media and investors conference a better look at the revised form of what I'm calling the Wonder Wand. As you can see in the image above, it has at least six buttons placed upon it, including the standard four PS face buttons, a big central button between them, and the home button below.

Plus, as you can plainly see by the text, it features force feedback, a gyroscope not unlike that in the Wii MotionPlus, an accelerometer, and something called "rendition by light," which may involve that bulb on top that looks like it should be sticking out of the mouth of a clown.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Sony, Microsoft, Project Natal, E3, Wii

Aonuma Says Traditional Flow of Zelda Will Change in Next Wii Game

Yesterday, we learned from franchise director Eiji Aonuma that "some of the internet speculation is right" surrounding the new Legend of Zelda game for Wii. But other than that, he said that further discussion and details surrounding the title would have to wait for the next Electronic Entertainment Expo.

But for IGN, it seems that E3 2010 has come early, for they managed to conduct an interview with Aonuma which reveals a little bit more about the title.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Legend of Zelda, E3, Will Wright, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Wii action-adventure finally pinned down. Square Enix will release Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers in Europe on 5th February. The Wii adventure has just launched in Japan and will be available in the US on Boxing Day, bizarrely. Crystal Bearers was revealed at E3 2005 long before the Wii (then the Revolution) had gone on sale. The idea, we presume, was to use the momentum generated by GameCube's excellent Crystal Chronicles from 2004.
DS | Zelda 'surprise' planned for E3 2010

Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma says developer has been "trying something new" with the structure of Link's upcoming Wii installment, due next year.
Nintendo certainly brought Mario to the party at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo , announcing such titles starring the portly plumber as Galaxy 2, Bowser's Inside Story, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. However, the publisher's other workhorse franchise, Zelda, went largely unnoticed, save for Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the DS, which had been announced several months prior at the 2009 Game Developers Conference .

                                Hey, listen!

However, Nintendo's creative mastermind Shigeru Miyamoto did drop some hints about the franchise during the show, saying a new console installment is "targeted" for 2010 . Today, producer Eiji Aonuma told the UK's Official Nintendo Magazine that the publisher should have a few details to share on the as-yet-unnamed Zelda game come E3 ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, E3, Nintendo, Wii, DS

No doubt the biggest what-the-hell moment of E3 2009 was the reveal of Nintendo's Wii Vitality Sensor, a device that will read a players pulse to... well, we're still not sure, because Nintendo didn't give many details. And now it appears it'll be exactly one year later when those details will finally be filled in: Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said they plan to show off the device at E3 next year, along with the first compatible games.
"We will show off the Vitality Sensor with software [at the show]," Fils-Aime succinctly said to Kotaku. "I'm not going to give you any more hints beyond that." This seems to suggest their original intention to release the device "not too late in the next year," according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata back in August, is probably no longer the case.
E3 2010 is scheduled to take place June 15-17 next year, so we have exactly that much time between now and then to ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, E3, Reggie Fils-Aime, Wii

Still recovering from Shigeru Miyamoto's announcement that he didn't expect the next Legend of Zelda game to "be radically different"? Don't lose hope just yet; producer Eiji Aonuma spoke with the Official Nintendo Magazine about the new Zelda that's coming to Wii, and he thinks fans will be surprised by what's in store for them.

"It is something we used to talk about with Mr. Miyamoto, and he and I agree that if we are following the same structure again and again, we might not be able to give long-time Zelda fans a fresh surprise," the Twilight Princess producer told ONM, continuing, "So we have been trying something new in terms of the structure of the Wii version of the new Zelda game this time. I am really hopeful that people will be surprised with the changes we have implemented for this Wii version."

It's already been confirmed that the next Zelda for Wii will take advantage of the MotionPlus add-on for more ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, E3, Wii, Shigeru Miyamoto, Legend of Zelda

A nice piece of kit - if you can make it work.

Emotional extremes recently ensued on receipt of a parcel containing a PSP Go. Having had a go on a Go, as it were, at E3, and been impressed by its industrial design, excitement instantly struck. Half an hour later - when I was near to getting the infernal object up and running - I had passed through annoyance and disillusion had set in.

Fils-Aime pumped about showing more. An update on the Wii Vitality Sensor and a first look at its software applications are already part of Nintendo's plans for E3 2010, according to a new interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. Although he offered no more details about the Vitality Sensor, which reads biometric data from a person's finger, the relatively frank interview on Kotaku did offer some insight into Nintendo's other future plans. Fils-Aime admitted that the company's policy of only starting heavy marketing on new games a few weeks prior to their release has not proven as successful for less mainstream titles. Some felt they must be placeholders for cooler characters, while others wondered if they would even get names (and still others would go on to name them on their own).

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Toad, New Super Mario Bros Wii, E3

Ken Kutaragi Starts New Networks Technology Company

Ever since Ken Kutaragi stepped down (or was forced out, or however you want to read it) from Sony Computer Entertainment a couple of years back, maybe you've been wondering how the man who was most influential to the PlayStation brand has been keeping busy since then. The answer: Starting his own company.
Edge Online reports that Kutaragi has announced the formation of Cyber Ai Entertainment, a networks technology company in Tokyo. According to what Kutaragi said to the Japanese Nikkei news service, his company will "initially focus on research and development relating to information processing, targeting cutting-edge networking operations."
How much any of this will still have to do with the videogames industry remains unclear. But Kutaragi (who was last seen in the wild seated in Sony's E3 press conference audience) also still acts as the CEO of game developer Cellius, which was created as a joint venture between ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Ken Kutaragi, Sony, E3, Namco Bandai

Rumor: Alan Wake to Awaken May 2010

After all these years of extended development, you'd be forgiven for thinking that you may never get to play Remedy's psychological/action thriller Alan Wake. Okay, so people have supposedly had hands-on time with the game at E3 and the Tokyo Game Show, but c'mon. Next you're going to tell me people actually walked on the moon. Baloney.

Now there are rumors coming from a source "close to the game" that Microsoft is planning for a global release in late May. Additionally, Microsoft is looking to market the game "in the style of a Hollywood movie".

Alan Wake looks so good already, it's not going to take much work to make people think it's a blockbuster film.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Alan Wake, Microsoft, E3, TGS

Alan Wake Launching Globally in May?

It's been in development for over five years, but Remedy's Alan Wake will finally be released in spring -- Microsoft has already confirmed this much themselves. But now it looks like that window has gotten even more specific: MCV reports that, according to "a source close to the game," Microsoft plans to launch Alan Wake globally in late May.
Evidently Microsoft, which is publishing the title, wants to promote it "in the style of a Hollywood movie," according to this source. MCV contacted Microsoft for confirmation, but they only issued the standard line that they don't comment on "rumor and speculation." So consider this a rumor for now.
Alan Wake received its biggest showing at E3 earlier this year, and another public demonstration at Tokyo Game Show back in September (check out our impressions here ). Remedy has announced the game is, for all intents and purposes, finished , so a late May release would certainly ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Alan Wake, Microsoft, E3, TGS

Sessler Declines "Fox and Friends" Appearance Due to Scheduling, Talks MW2 in Soapbox

Like clockwork, Fox News made a point of attacking the recently-released Modern Warfare 2 due to its inclusion of "that scene" on its show "Fox and Friends." Interestingly enough, despite having been public knowledge for a few weeks now, the network opted not to raise a fuss until after people had made their purchases. No sense in warning people or acting on their concerns, after all, when you can simply stand there and complain about it.

That said, people have not exactly been thrilled with the performance given by SlashGamer.com founder Jon Christensen, wondering why someone the likes of Adam Sessler or Geoff Keighley were not asked instead. But as G4TV.com reports, Adam was indeed asked to appear, but due to scheduling, he had to decline.

That said, he does tackle the issue in the latest Sessler's Soapbox:

Video Game - E3 2009 - Sessler's Soapbox

Sessler raises some good points, and it's unfortunate that they are being made in an avenue where they are less likely to do as much good as they ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Modern Warfare 2, E3

NATAL launch details leaked?

Website MCV claims to obtained information regarding the launch of Microsoft’s much awaited motion controller, currently codenamed ‘Project Natal.
According to their source, Natal is to be released in worldwide in November 2010, with the aim to pitch the add-on at a very competitive price (under £50). It also claimed that 15 titles would be available at launch.
NATAL set the gaming world (and the mainstream press) alight when it was first announced at E3 2009, and is seen as Microsoft’s answer to Nintendo’s hugely successful Wii and Sony’s still unnamed motion-controller. Offering a controller-free input, facial recognition and precise motion tracking amongst other things, NATAL has the potential to be something huge, and if the rumour of 15 titles arriving at launch is correct, it appears that Microsoft is throwing all its weight behind ensuring the device’s success.

News: New Zelda may not be out next year

Nintendo's not committing to 2010. Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has hinted there may be a bit of a wait in store for the next Wii instalment in the Zelda series. "We haven't committed to Zelda in 2010," he told GameTrailers (as spotted by VG247). That's not to say a release next year isn't possible, and Nintendo has discussed such a possibility before. At E3 2009, Shigeru Miyamoto said he was aiming for a 2010 release - although he made no promises.
Split/Second Offers Gamers A Whole New Way To Race

Explosions, cruise ship collisions, and all around mayhem: Not what you'd expect from a racing game. Split/Second , the upcoming racing game from Disney Interactive Studios and Black Rock Studios, has a new trailer and it's shiny.
Split/Second was the winner of the of Best Racing Game in the Game Critics Awards: Best of E3 2009. The game takes a unique spin on the racing genre, as the trailer accurately depicts. Rather than being based on simple competition, Split/Second revolves around a reality television series, so the courses are lined with explosives, crashes and obstacles you wouldn't expect from a racing game. If this trailer holds up then look forward to an action-packed game in 2010 .
Split/Second will be released for the Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC.

Sessler's Soapbox: Adam Calls Infinity Ward Out

Lately, Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 has made itself into a small hotbed of controversy the likes of which might make even Take Two a little jealous. First was one particular mission, which turned out to be optional, and then there was the infamous "Fight Against Grenade Spamming" video.

It is the latter point with which G4's Adam Sessler has taken issue with in his latest edition of Sessler's Soapbox:

Video Game - E3 2009 - Sessler's Soapbox

While Sessler is hopeful that this might raise awareness or make people think, I'm not sure I have that same faith. I'm sure there will at least be one person who might reconsider what they're saying as a result of this, but... yeah.

I do wish Infinity Ward had put a little more thought into that punchline for their video and the repercussions it might have, rather than essentially stepping up as an enabler to all of the hate-term-dropping 13-year olds on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network.

Sure, they've pretty much said "whoops" and apologized, ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 2, E3, Xbox

Left 4 Dead 2 Preorders Reach Four Times That of the First Game

Ever wonder how much of an impact the now-defunct boycott of Left 4 Dead 2 had? If preorder numbers equal sales, then not a whole lot; Valve's Chet Faliszek claims that preorders for the zombie apocalypse sequel are four times higher than its predecessor.

Speaking with CVG, the former Old Man Murray writer discussed the fan outrage that followed Left 4 Dead 2's unveiling during this summer's E3. "One of the weird things at E3 was we knew we weren't showing the complete package, we knew there was a whole bunch of stuff we were holding back but we wanted to show something," he explained, adding that the post-E3 boycott changed "how we talked about it and how we talked with everybody."

That doesn't mean the boycott had any effect on the game itself, however. Faliszek jested, "If you put $20 in a box and charge $10 for it someone would complain you didn't put $50 in a box.
