Square Enix seems to be especially busy lately, considering the whole Eidos thing. Their latest announcement is grappling down a date for Just Cause 2, set to hits stores on March 23, which seems to be becoming a big month for the company.

While the original Just Cause didn't exactly set the world on fire, the sequel, with its on-the-fly parachuting and grappling, seems to be turning out quite nicely.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Just Cause 2, Square Enix, Eidos, Just Cause

Square Enix Doing Cinematics For Deus Ex 3

Square Enix has announced that the first collaborative effort between the Final Fantasy publisher and the (fairly) recently purchased Eidos Interactive will in fact be Eidos Montreal’s next installment in the Deus Ex franchise.

As Square Enix general manager Stephane D’Astous told Edge Online , “ Deus Ex 3 is going to be the first project which will be a concrete product of joint effort between Square Enix and Eidos. The cinematics—by which I mean any CGI pre-rendered cinematics — are going to be done in Tokyo by Square Enix, and that's going to be amazing."

D’Astous went on to say that the Square team is especially excited about the project since it will be their “first project…that’s a non-Final Fantasy title – they even want to work on Thief 4 too, so everyone is really excited.”
When I think of Deus Ex cinematics, the first thing that comes to mind if the opening of Deus Ex: Invisible War , because I ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Square Enix, Deus Ex 3, Eidos, Final Fantasy, Deus EX

Just Cause 2 Confirmed for Spring Release

Looks like Square Enix hopes to see a return on that Eidos investment sooner rather than later; the publisher announced this morning that Just Cause 2 will be hitting store shelves on March 23, 2010 -- just before the end of the fiscal year, incidentally.

Along with Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days , Just Cause 2 will be among the first major Eidos properties to come out of the company following this year's acquisition by Square Enix. Will it make a bigger splash than the original Just Cause ? Developer Avalanche Studios has had over three years since the first game released, so it should be interesting to see what they've learned since then.

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days Officially Announced

While it was already confirmed by a trademark application back in July, Square Enix, Eidos, and IO Interactive today confirmed that Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days is in the works for both the PS3 and Xbox 360, to release sometime in 2010.

While little was revealed about the new game, IO Interactive did say that the game would use "a new visual experience" based on various documentary filmmakers. It will also hopefully be completely devoid of Bruce Willis.

Hopefully, the game will also have a higher body count this time...and a lower body count for games journalists.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, IO Interactive, Square Enix, Eidos, PS3, Xbox 360

Kane & Lynch Sequel Confirmed for Next Year

IO Interactive's Kane & Lynch did fairly well for Eidos back in 2007 -- despite some unfortunate controversy -- and now Square Enix is hoping to cash in on their recent purchase of Eidos with a Kane & Lynch sequel. As anyone who follows the videogame trademark scene might have suspected, the follow-up will be titled Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days .

Square Enix intends on releasing Dog Days on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC sometime next year. It's set in Shanghai's criminal underworld, and the developers promise "a new visual experience... inspired by documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era."

What's that mean, exactly? Our guess: Kane spends the duration of the game documenting the effects of an all-Baconnaise diet; meanwhile, Lynch refuses to leave his bedroom until he finishes his Dom DeLuise tribute livery in Forza 3 . Sounds riveting, no?

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Eidos, Square Enix, IO Interactive, PS3, Xbox 360

Kane And Lynch Sequel Is Official

While not exactly a secret, the sequel to Kane & Lynch: Dead Men has now been officially announced. Eidos' gritty action game is called Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days and will be released for PS3, 360 and PC in 2010.
According to Eidos, Dog Days is "inspired by documentary filmmakers and the user-generated era," and has been designed to deliver "a fresh perspective to the words 'intensity' and 'realism' in video games."
"Gamers are always looking for something new and that is exactly what they are going to get with Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days," said Niels Jorgensen, general manager of IO Interactive, in a press release.
I liked the first game, but with qualifications. There's a point where "gritty" becomes "ridiculous" and Kane and Lynch crossed that line a few too many times, plus, the lack of online co-op was puzzling. I'm going to track down someone at Eidos to see if this game will feature online co-op, and ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Eidos, PS3, PC

Q& A: The Then And Now of IO Interactive

Founded in 1998 and headquarted in Copenhagen, Denmark, IO Interactive is one of the oldest surviving Scandinavian developers. Originally independent studio, the company was purchased by Eidos and is now part of the Square Enix Group. While mostly known for its action-heavy third person games such as the Hitman franchise and Kane & Lynch, the studio has branched into a new direction with the recently released, lighthearted Mini Ninjas. The game retains IO's traditional third ...

Square Enix Creating First Global Game with Eidos Montreal

Eidos Montreal (or are they called Square Enix Europe Montreal now?) is hard at work at several other games right now, but that isn't stopping them from making a game for their new parent company.

At the recent Montreal Games Summit, Square Enix head honcho Yoichi Wada stopped by to reveal that the RPG giant is co-developing a game with the Montreal branch, marking the first time that Square Enix would be working hand in hand with a western developer.

Let's just hope there's some time and consideration put into this one, and not just the usual Square Enix tactic of putting an established franchise into a new genre.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Square Enix, Eidos

First joint venture between Japanese company and new subsidiary being undertaken at Deus Ex 3, Thief 4 development house in Montreal.
In July, Square Enix retired the Eidos publishing label , having purchased the UK-based outfit as part of an initiative to better tap into the global audience earlier this year. However, Eidos' studios remain active. The development arm is currently at work on new installments in such Western franchises as Hitman, Tomb Raider, and Thief--games that will join upcoming Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest projects bearing the Square Enix moniker.

Could it be Kingdom Hearts: The JC Denton Affair?

As could be expected, though, Square Enix's development teams and Eidos' studios will be doing some intermingling going forward. On hand at the Montreal Games Summit today, UK gaming magazine Develop reports that Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada has confirmed that the company's first game to bear influences ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Eidos, Square Enix, Xbox 360, Deus Ex 3, Thief 4

Square Enix purchased Eidos Interactive to expand their brand, and they sure aren't wasting any time doing it.

Video capturing option, to be specific. Eidos appears to be planning extra video recording features for the PS3 version of Just Cause 2. The game will be able to automatically record 30 second clips or store manually filmed videos up-to 10 minutes long, according to PlayDevil. Those stored videos can then be uploaded to YouTube to share with the world - an ability that continues to produce unlikely stars.
Just Cause 2 Preview

Blame the insipid Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, if you will, or Vin Diesel’s wrecked-from-birth Wheelman, or even Far Cry and Crysis, but I’m sick to the rear molars of games in which over-clocked Western secret service bruisers are slam-dunked into post-colonial scenery in order to flog their militaristic hard-ons in the name of international stability. It’s less a question of pinko liberal sympathies as familiarity-bred contempt: the old sub-equatorial geo-political sandbox is positively heaving with unshaven one-man-armies and their flaccid punchlines. Next time, developers, try rural Dorset. The weather’s not too pleasant, but they make wonderful cream teas.
Such whinging aside, there’s always room for a game that’s utterly, spectacularly, triumphantly stupid, whether it’s set in Borneo or Birmingham, and Avalanche’s third-person pacification spree Just Cause 2 is certainly that. This stupidity hinges on two elements: a parachute, and a ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Just Cause 2, PS3, Xbox 360, Square Enix, Eidos, Avalanche Studios

Eidos Interactive Becomes Square Enix Europe... er, Again?

Following the purchase of Eidos by Square Enix back in May, and contrary to earlier reports that they would be keeping their name, Eidos is changing its name to Square Enix Europe. Strange... I thought this happened already.

Perhaps that was simply the decision to make it happen, with it actually taking effect today? To be honest, it's a little unclear, going by Destructoid's story.

"We have a formidable product line-up which truly showcases the diversity of our exceptional gaming brands," said SEE (or "SqEE," depending on the preference of the person writing) President and Chief Executive Officer Phil Rogers. What that really has to do with the name change, I have no idea, either.

In any case, there you have it: a new face of Eidos Interactive for all to SEE.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Eidos, Square Enix

Looks like the assimilation is now complete. Square Enix announced today that Eidos Interactive has been rebranded as Square Enix Europe, rounding out the transition that began with Eidos' acquisition back in March.

"Today marks a major achievement towards the goals we announced in July and represents the creation of an efficient and powerful structure for game development and publishing," said Square Enix Europe president and CEO Phil Rogers.
