New Mercenaries Game Confirmed Following Video Leak

Despite Mercenaries developer Pandemic being shut down just a week ago, a new Mercenaries game called Mercs Inc. has been announced today. More than likely, EA had no intention of making an announcement about the game at this point, but the video above (which leaked earlier today) undoubtedly forced their hand.
The announcement didn't actually reveal much of anything about the game, unfortunately. But between the video and the description written by the video's original poster (via Bitmob) of a "multiplayer sandbox game," it looks to be a new Mercenaries game with a heavier emphasis on multiplayer than what we saw with the simple two-player co-op mode found in Mercenaries 2 . According to Bitmob , "two dozen or so" former Pandemic staffers who weren't laid off have headed to EA LA to continue working on the game.

"We are very excited to announce a new installment in the popular Mercenaries series ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts

Xbox 360 | EALA arming new Mercenaries

One week after laying off most of Pandemic, EA reveals next installment in guns-for-hire series; leaked pitch trailer suggests multiplayer focus.
Last week, Electronic Arts confirmed the layoffs of roughly 200 staffers at its Pandemic Studios . Though it would not say how many staffers remained, the publisher did confirm the retained members of the Mercenaries 2 developer were being folded into the EA's nearby Los Angeles studio. EA vice president of corporate communications Jeff Brown also emphasized the Pandemic brand would live on at EA after the majority of its staff--including its three founders--had departed.

A preliminary logo for Mercs Inc., the IPO for which will not occur for some time.

Today, EA revealed a new game that would bear the Pandemic name, temporarily titled Mercs Inc. Unfortunately, that's about all the company revealed. In a statement, EA senior VP and group general manager Nick Earl said that at ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts, Xbox 360

Xbox 360 | Madden Arcade touches down on XBL

Xbox Live Update: EA's pigskin spin-off joined on Marketplace by Games on Demand Saints Row 2 and Lego Indiana Jones.
In America, watching NFL games on Thanksgiving is becoming as traditional as the turkey dinner itself. Unfortunately, this year's slate of games lacks a marquee match-up; two of the three tilts involve league bottom-feeders like the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders, while the third game is between the Denver Broncos (losers of four straight) and the New York Giants (losers of three of their last four).

Saints Row 2, now available with all the heat-packing hot dog action and none of the tangibility!
If that lineup sounds a little limp, football fans might be happy to have a different kind of NFL game on TV this week, and Microsoft is happy to oblige. This week's Xbox Live Arcade Wednesday release is Electronic Arts' Madden NFL Arcade, a five-on-five gridiron game where the emphasis is on heavy hits and big ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Xbox 360, Saints Row 2, LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures, Microsoft, Electronic Arts

Electronic Arts Committed To Pandemic Brand, Announces Mercs Inc

In the middle of writing up a story about superannuation discovering an early video for the currently unannounced follow-up to Mercenaries 2: World in Flames , Electronic Arts decided to make the whole situation official. Mercs Inc , which EA says is very much a working title for the project, is currently in the early stages of development at Pandemic's "new home" within EALA.
Mercs Inc will be the first Pandemic-branded game from EA following Pandemic's official dissolution. It will be produced internally at EA but carry the Pandemic branding.
EA released no details on Mercs Inc , but the leaked video suggested the next game would adopt a focus on cooperative and competitive multiplayer amongst more than two players.
It's currently unknown how many of the original Mercenaries team are on this project.

Pandemic Announces Mercenaries Sequel

Following a massive staff reduction and the integration of its core team into Electronic Arts' Los Angeles studio, Pandemic Studios has announced that it's developing a new Mercenaries game. The project has the working title of Mercs Inc., though the studio didn't reveal platforms, stating only that it's "in the early stages of development" at EALA. It'll be a new entry in one of the studio's flagship franchises, which began in 2005 with Mercenaries and ...

Sims 3 World Adventures Review

When EA released The Sims 3 earlier this year, one of the major criticisms reviewers leveled at the game was that it lacked content found in The Sims 2 . The concern was that Electronic Arts was holding content back so they could charge for it in future expansions. As it turns out, the first Sims 3 expansion pack does indeed have a great deal in common with The Sims 2: Bon Voyage . However, World Adventures expands on many of the original game's ideas with new environments, quests, and other perks, making for a satisfying refresh of the original game.

NCAA Basketball 10 Review

College basketball has consistently played second fiddle to the NBA in videogames, with releases full of similar feature sets often a year or two behind their "professional" counterparts. This year's NCAA Basketball 10 , developed by EA Canada, does a great deal, to buck that tradition, mirroring NBA Live 10 's gameplay so perfectly that it's a bit uncanny; it's like The Talented Mr. Ripley with basketball instead of Jude Law and Matt Damon.

NCAA 10, like NBA Live 10, delivers a completely revamped shooting system that relies on one button to both attempt field goals and dunk. This system feels fluid and makes me wonder why it's taken so long for EA to make the change; gone are the awkward lay-ups from three-point land and jumpers from inside the paint. And the on-the-fly play calling is great for setting screens and moving players into position to make baskets efficiently.

Wii | Shippin' Out Nov. 22-27: Tekken 6 PSP, Madden Arcade

Gaming retailers give thanks for Black Friday sales as Namco Bandai's portable brawler and EA's downloadable football spin-off lead the holiday week's new releases.
The week of Thanksgiving is one of the busiest on the US retail calendar, thanks to an abundance of Black Friday and a potential nightmare for anyone working in retail. Ironically, it's one of the quieter weeks on the gaming new release calendar this year, with such heavy hitters as Dragon Age: Origins , Assassin's Creed II , and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 arriving earlier in the month.

Traditionally, vampires thirst for a)water, b)Sunny Delight, c)blood, or d)acceptance.
For the traditional gaming crowd, the biggest retail release for the week of November 22-27 is the PSP version of Tekken 6, which launched on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 last month. The portable version crams in all 40 main characters and their movesets, along with arcade, story, and ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Tekken 6, PS3, Electronic Arts, Xbox 360

Mass: We Pray a Dante's Inferno Marketing Stunt

Last week's satirical advertisement for Mass: We Pray, which featured cross-shaped motion controllers and gameplay modes like 'baptism' and 'ring the tower bell', has turned out to be another bit of sneaky marketing for EA's upcoming Dante's Inferno.

All of the game's marketing efforts have tied into the seven deadly sins. Back at E3, EA held a contest asking attendees to take pictures with booth-babes, which tied in with 'Lust'. EA also sent out checks to media outlets as a tie-in with 'Greed'. Apparently the Mass: We Pray advertisement ties in with 'Heresy'.

Seeing these marketing stunts fall flat, I wonder if the controversy EA is trying to raise is doing the game any good.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts, Dante's Inferno, E3

Free Need for Speed: Shift DLC Detailed And Dated

Watch Larger Version | Watch HD Version
Need for Speed: Shift fans are in for quite a treat in a few weeks as Electronic Arts will be releasing the first batch of downloadable content for their acclaimed racing title, and best of all, it’s free.
The DLC release introduces an entirely new multiplayer mode called Team Racing, which will pit two teams of six players against each other in a Circus Maximus-style racing battle to the death! (Note: that might be an exaggeration on my part) Also included in the DLC pack will be five new smokin' hot rides:

     1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 427
     1967 Shelby GT-500
     1969 Dodge Charger R/T
     1971 Dodge Challenger R/T
     1998 Toyota Supra Mark IV

All of this Shift goodness will available on Dec. 1 for Xbox 360 and Dec. 10 for PlayStation 3.

EA Sports Active: More Workouts

Exercise games on the Wii have been commonplace since the system launched in late 2006, with choices like Wii Fit , Jillian Michaels Fitness , and even Gold's Gym Cardio Workout . So earlier this year, when EA announced that it was bringing out its own fitness program, many (myself included) were skeptical that the studio would be able to create a hit to stand apart from all of those other options. But EA Sports Active was a big success, and many top-rated fitness magazines and trainers endorsed it as a true way to lose weight on the Wii. Well, EA has wasted no time in announcing a follow-up, called EA Sports Active: More Workouts , which improves on the original by adding 35 new routines that target specific areas of the body, revamping the warm-up and cool-down routines, and even throwing in a healthy living cookbook called "The Best Life Diet" by Bob Greene (Oprah's personal trainer).

But the biggest reason to pick up ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, EA Sports Active, Wii, Electronic Arts

'Return to Ostagar' in New Dragon Age: Origins DLC

Bioware announced today that it would be releasing DLC for Dragon Age: Origins this holiday season. Players will literally Return to Ostagar. The expansion involves a quest, a King Cailan, and said king's honor. If you've played the game that might make sense, but I have my doubts.

This marks the third DLC pack to be released for the game since it was released. This is an unprecedented pace for DLC for a game that doesn't involve guitars or bands.

The expansion will cost 400 MS points, 400 Bioware points, or $5 in the Playstation Store. As is usual EA has received some criticism for not including this obviously planned DLC on the disc in the first place. Considering the game on the disc could take 60+ hours it does beg the question: what do gamers paying $60 "deserve."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Dragon Age: Origins, BioWare, Electronic Arts

BioWare Announces Additional Dragon Age DLC

The release of Dragon Age: Origins downloadable content is continuing at a rapid pace. Electronic Arts and BioWare have just announced Return to Ostagar, the third set of DLC to arrive since the game's release earlier this month.

As the name implies, the DLC pack takes players back to Ostagar, the "site of the Grey Wardens' darkest hour." There it seems that it will be possible to "discover King Cailan's top-secret political agenda." Naturally, there will be plenty of epic loot to make the trip worthwhile.

At the moment, there are two sets of DLC available for Dragon Age. Stone Prisoner grants access to the Golem Shale, while Warden's Keep opens up a new area to explore. While Stone Prisoner was available for free in some versions, BioWare and EA have been criticized by some for not including all of the DLC in the original game.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, BioWare, Electronic Arts, Dragon Age: Origins

Despite having the "fastest selling sports game ever" on its hands, it seems that Electronic Arts isn't too concerned about correcting a game-breaking glitch in FIFA 10. The bug appears in the game's Manager Mode, and can take effect when a player switches teams at the end of a season, leaving the player 2,000,000 (dollars, I assume) in debt, putting a quick stop to their run.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts, FIFA 10

NCAA Basketball 10 Review

It's only November, but soon the sports world will be buzzing with a little thing called March Madness. Until then, we have the NFL, the World Cup, the Winter Olympics, the NBA and the NHL to keep our little sports tanks full. There's also NCAA Basketball 10 from EA. Our own Mike D'Alonzo has the review:
"College basketball is a two-headed monster of a sport, attracting both devoted fanatics and those who are drawn to the frenzy that is March Madness. EA has done their best to please both parties with NCAA Basketball 10 , and the result is a flawed, but generally fun experience."

SCEA, Ubi, Disney, EA Face Voice Tech Patent Suit

A Texas-based technology company has filed a lawsuit against Ubisoft, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Electronic Arts and Disney alleging that the four companies' games violate a voice-recognition tech patent. Bareis Technologies is the holder of a 13 year-old patent that covers automatic speech recognition tech built into CD players "for command and control purposes", and believes games are covered under this. The company is seeking damages for infringement from the listed companies, since it ...

Consultant David Edery delivered a fascinating talk about company culture at the IGDA Leadership Forum, examining the variant approaches of successful studios -- and suggesting that changing corporate culture is harder than it looks. According to Edery, the recent trend -- as reflected by Electronic Arts' strategy with Playfish -- "is to leave acquisitions alone. It's not because they're lazy, it's not because they don't want to go through the effort... It's in many ways ...

C&C; will be revamped too. We still don't know anything about the new Medal of Honor, but EA Games vice president Nick Earl has told staff that it looks "simply stunning". That's according to a leaked internal memo reported by Kotaku, in which Earl describes how bosses at EA Los Angeles "have been leading a reinvention". Apparently Earl "couldn't be happier with the focus and progress these teams have shown" - the other team being the one working on "Command & Conquer with a new digital model" for a world after Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight. Electronic Arts might be closing studios and laying off large numbers of employees, but they've still got enough cash to open a fitness store or two. Witness their two new EA Sports Active stores, which opened November 15 in Boston and San Francisco (via Joystiq ).

The new stores feature multiple demo units with EA Sports Active and the new EA Sports Active: More Workouts , as well as "active trainers" who are available to demonstrate the game for users. A fitness blogger checked out the Boston store and posted her impressions along with some photos, which can be found here .

The stores will be around until December 14, and are currently taking reservations for workout sessions. If you want to check one of them out, here are the addresses.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, EA Sports Active, Electronic Arts

Earlier this year, it was announced that Visceral Games heads Glenn Schofield and Michael Condrey would be leaving parent company EA for the shores of rival publisher Activision. Since then, we haven't heard a peep from the duo, until today. Activision has officially announced the formation of Sledgehammer Games, to be headed up by Schofield and Condrey.

Word is that the new developer is working on a game based upon an existing Activision franchise, so we'll have to wait and see what they're up to.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Sledgehammer, Electronic Arts

PC | Aussie censor board explains L4D2 banning

Full Review Board report shows violence main factor behind the denial of the Left 4 Dead 2 appeal; delineation between humans, zombies, and infected deemed "irrelevant".
The saga of Left 4 Dead 2 has been a long and disappointing one for Australian gamers. Initially banned for its "realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence" in September , Valve and publisher EA resubmitted a toned-down, less violent version which received the maximum MA 15+ rating down under. But there was still a sliver of hope that the full version would make it, with EA appealing the original banning. Hopes were soon crushed; however, with the Classification Review Board denied EA's appeal , meaning Aussie gamers will be left with blood-spray and dismemberment-less versions when the game officially ships to stores tomorrow.

While we all knew the Review Board's final decision, little was known about exactly why the appeal failed. Until now, that is. GameSpot AU has obtained a copy of the Review Board's report, and ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts, Left 4 Dead 2

EA Montreal's Schneider Asks Developers: "Who Do We Make Games For?"

At the Montreal International Game Summit, EA Montreal's Reid Schneider put forth a question for developers to ponder: "who do we make games for?" While he says that one should make games for themselves, they should also remember who their market is. This led to an interesting analogy, as he recalls how he was charged with improving his fraternity's parties:

"The first unanimous request from the guys was that we needed to have more girls at our parties," he said. "I was in total agreement; this made complete sense to me. But the core problem is that our parties were about good beer and music that we liked. It was just for us. We were missing our audience. We were building stuff for ourselves."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Electronic Arts
