PlayStation 3 | Rock Band song library hits 1,000

Harmonix and MTV Games reach milestone between on-disc, downloadable tracks for rhythm franchise.
When Rock Band was first announced in April 2007, Harmonix founder Alex Rigopoulos laid out his ambition for the project , saying the developer had "very big plans for building out a huge library of online expansion content." That ambition has been soundly realized, as this week the Rock Band platform reached a new milestone, with 1,000 songs available on disc or as downloadable content.

Rock Band will never sport a true "never-ending setlist," but it gets a little closer every week.
That tally spans songs from Rock Band, Rock Band 2, Lego Rock Band, the PSP adaptation Rock Band Unplugged, and hundreds of downloadable songs that can be played across multiple games. It also includes the retail-exclusive AC/DC track pack's 18 songs, but omits The Beatles: Rock Band, as that game and its downloadable content are not compatible with ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Rock Band, PS3, Harmonix, Guitar Hero

This week's edition of Critical Reception examines online reaction to Activision's skateboard peripheral-bundled Tony Hawk: RIDE, which reviews describe as being "as close to real skating as Guitar Hero is to proper fretwork." RIDE currently earns a score of 55 out of 100 at Metacritic.com. Ben Talbot at OXM UK gives RIDE a score of 6 out of 10. "After nearly ten years of challenging our dextrous skills, the Tony Hawk franchise has taken a ...

LEGO Rock Band - PS3 - GR Review

The Emperor's New Groove Box.

Lego Rock Band does not come bundled with peripherals ; the makers assume the target audience already has a previous Rock Band title (or compatible Guitar Hero title), including a guitar or two, a microphone, and a drum set. Using a similar assumption, this review will not go into the basic mechanics of gameplay, for Lego Rock Band is like any Rock Band : play the notes or sing the words on time.

[image1]Where Lego Rock Band differs, however, and whether these differences seem worthwhile is the question. While it offers several new features, its most outstanding may be that it offers fewer features. But you get the same feeling playing Lego Rock Band that you get when you watch Die Hard on TBS. In its attempt to be accessible to a wider audience, it has been unnecessarily edited. Sometimes the edits make you chuckle, but sometimes they just make you long for the real thing.

So what does Lego Rock Band have going for it? Obviously, ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, LEGO Rock Band, Rock Band, Guitar Hero

Red Octane Considering DLC Subscription Model for Guitar Hero

We know more "Hero" games are on the way, but Activision may have another revenue stream in the works for their popular music franchise. A wide-ranging Seattle Times interview (via Plastic Axe ) with Red Octane co-founder Kai Huang turned toward the question of a monthly subscription service for the game's downloadable content. "That's definitely one of the things we would love to do," Huang said. "There are a lot of issues around music licensing. Customers want it; I know I want it. We're trying to make that happen."

A subscription-based service like Rhapsody would certainly be a big win for the franchise if priced right, providing fans with a large catalog of playable tracks while giving the company a consistent revenue stream. The statement that they're already looking into it suggests the possibility, though Huang was right to point out that such a setup runs into difficulties when it comes to getting the ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Guitar Hero, Activision, Kai

Wii | Sports, music games exempt from ratings in latest UK bill

Draft of Digital Economy measure proposes exceptions for games situated in athletics, rhythm, religion genres.
The British government outlined its plans for the future of the Digital Economy in June. As part of those proceedings, the government made it clear that the Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system would become legally enforceable in the UK . Last week, the British Parliament published the latest draft of the bill, offering more details on how it plans to handle ratings exemptions.

The next Guitar Hero might be rated N/A.

As had been suggested , all titles that are aimed at younger children will be exempt from statutory classification. Specifically, anything aimed exclusively at those under 12 will not require legal classification, as long as they do not contain "depictions of violence towards human or animal characters," "depictions of violence towards other characters where the violence looks realistic," ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Music, Guitar Hero

Band Hero (DS)

With three portable iterations of Guitar Hero currently on store shelves, it was inevitable that Activision would introduce the full-on band experience onto Nintendo's popular handheld -- but how well does it work? Reviewer Megan Watt tried her hand at the DS version of Band Hero, but the lack of a career mode and On Tour's infamous hand-cramping peripheral really hurts the overall experience.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Band Hero, Guitar Hero, Activision, Nintendo, DS

REVIEW: Band Hero is Guitar Hero for the Tweens

What the Game's About
Band Hero is a spin-off of the Guitar Hero franchise that has become a household name. For all intents and purposes, the game is a facsimile of the post-Guitar Hero: World Tour formula. The biggest difference is the younger skew of the songs and the overall appearance and style.

What's Hot
Guitar Hero 5 was a great version of the Guitar Hero franchise. Band Hero wisely copied the DNA of Guitar Hero 5 and replicated it. The gameplay is smooth, it is easy to get into the game and you can play any song you want right off the bat. The create-a-rocker mode has a lot of different styles or you can use your Xbox LIVE Avatar to jam with a cuter version of a pop star band. Band Hero sticks true to the adage of, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Band Hero, Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero World Tour, Xbox

It was never a question of whether Activision would be releasing more "Hero" games in 2010, just a matter of which franchises they would be focusing on. According to Activision's Guitar Hero CEO Dan Rosensweig, the answer is, "Pretty much all of them."

"We're working on our 2010 slate now. You will probably see fewer SKUs from us, but the focus on making the best-selling, most fun to play, best-reviewed games will continue. Those are the things that are constant," Rosensweig told .

"[There will be] more DJ Hero , and the next iterations of Guitar [Hero] and Band [Hero] are on the way. But we will see how the market plays out. What you will see is the games will live longer and be more vibrant through DLC."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Guitar Hero, DJ Hero

Fewer Guitar Hero Games In 2010, Activision Promises Another DJ Hero

In 2010, Activision has launched Guitar Hero 5 , Band Hero and DJ Hero , the last of which marks the company's first attempt to create an original music property since launching Guitar Hero. A still-down economy combined with annually slumping music game sales, however, means even Activision will be reducing the numbers of games it releases next year, Guitar Hero CEO Dan Rosensweig tells MCV .
“We’re working on our 2010 slate now," said Rosenweig. "You will probably see fewer SKUs from us, but the focus on making the best-selling, most fun to play, best-reviewed games will continue. Those are the things that are constant."
The launch of DJ Hero was soft. According to NPD Group sales numbers for October, DJ Hero only sold 122,000 copies in total across every platform. Despite this, Rosenweig said there will be more DJ Hero in the future. It wouldn't make much sense for Activision to give up on the franchise after so much marketing fanfare, but for ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DJ Hero, Activision, Guitar Hero

Activision Applies for Drum Hero Trademark

Activision just shipped both DJ Hero and Band Hero , but could another Guitar Hero spin-off be on the way? Recent developments suggest that the publisher's already planning their next move; Activision has filed a trademark for Drum Hero .

MTV Multiplayer spotted the application on the United States Patent and Trademark Office's website. It describes "Toys, handheld games with liquid crystal displays, musical toys; action figures and accessories therefor; arcade games; coin-operated videogames; electric action toys; handheld unit for playing electronic videogames; electronic toy drums"

Of course, this trademark doesn't necessarily guarantee that Drum Hero is officially in the works. After all, RedOctane previously filed a very similar application just a few years ago, and Activision registered trademarks on Guitar Villain and Drum Villain games around the same time -- nothing ever came of those. But this does ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, DJ Hero, Band Hero, Guitar Hero

Another "Hero" is Coming Our Way

Activision aka Milkivision is at the milking process again.

Activision is throwing claims out there that Guitar Hero is the third highest selling franchise of all time, behind Mario, and Madden, all three names that are just common among everyone in the world. We've already seen DJ Hero and Band Hero and all the titles previous to those. Activision is at it again to add yet another name into the "Hero" music line of games.

Hit the break to read more about the new "Hero" in the family.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Guitar Hero, Mario, DJ Hero, Band Hero

Rock Band 3 Will Aim To Teach People How To Play Music

One of the chief complaints about Guitar Hero and Rock Band is that people ought to just learn how to play the real thing. Well, that may actually happen with Rock Band 3.

Having previously helped get The Beatles Rock Band off the ground, Dhani Harrison has reportedly stayed on to consult on Rock Band 3. The son of Beatle George Harrison told the Chicago Tribune that he wants to make the controllers "more real" for the next game (via Plastic Axe ).

"I'm working on Rock Band 3' and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game," Harrison said.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Rock Band, Will Wright, Music, Guitar Hero, The Beatles: Rock Band

New Call of Duty and Guitar Hero Installments for 2010

Though it may come as a surprise to no one, Activision has announced that they will be releasing another Guitar Hero and Call of Duty title by the end of 2010. Here's what chief financial officer Thomas Tipple had to say: "In 2010, Activision publishing is expected to release a strong product line of innovative new titles. The diversified lineup will include, among others, titles based on the best-selling franchises in the company's history, including Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Shrek, and Spiderman, and a select few new intellectual properties such as Blur and Singularity, and a strong catalog based on our top sellers of 2009."

So, is anyone excited for another Treyarch Call of Duty title? With Modern Warfare 2 less than a week away, I can't really wrap my mind around another CoD at the moment. Then again, is anyone really surprised that Activision is milking these franchises for all their worth? I'm guessing no.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Activision, Shrek, Spiderman

Activision Scores High in Q3 Financial Results

Despite a tough economy, Activision still managed to pull out a strong 3rd quarter, the company announced Thursday. In all, $755 million in sales were brought in, exceeding previously set goals of $700 million.

According to Activision, strong sales of Guitar Hero, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty were the reason for sales upturn. While the first two - with four different Guitar Hero releases so far this year and the juggernaut that is WoW - are no surprise, the lasting power of Call of Duty: World at War is surprising. Then again, it could simple be due to all of those Modern Warfare 2 pre-orders.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Activision, Guitar Hero, World of Warcraft, Call of Duty, Call Of Duty: World at War, Modern Warfare 2

New Call Of Duty, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Spider-Man Games Coming In 2010

None of this should come as a surprise given Activision's love for sequels, but during the publisher's quarterly financial results conference call, the company confirmed new installments in Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Tony Hawk, Spider-Man and Shrek throughout 2010.
The call is still happening as I'm writing this. So far, the company has not delved into specifics of each game, but there's usually a tidbit or two hidden in the question and answer session.
Stay tuned.

Pictures Of Old People Playing Guitar Hero As Funny As It Sounds

Hey, I don't have anything against old people. Decades from now, when we're all playing video games through virtual tubes, I'm sure youngsters will be laughing at me, too. But for the time being, it's the other wary around. The Faster Times recently ran a series of photos collected from Flickr chronicling a series of older men and women trying their hand at ye ol' Guitar Hero . As one might expect, the lulz ensue.

Study: Rock Band, Guitar Hero Players Demonstrate Strong Music Genre Loyalty

Players of games in the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchise demonstrate strong music game loyalty -- but contrary to what some might expect, they seem nearly as loyal to the genre overall as they do to just one franchise or the other, according to a new DFC Intelligence report. During the month of September, DFC tracked 10,000 users of the Xbox 360 versions of Neversoft's Guitar Hero 5 and Harmonix's The Beatles: Rock Band, ...

GJ09: Publisher of the Year

Music games and warfare probably to thank.

Activision Blizzard has scooped the gong for Publisher of the year. We reckon the super successful Guitar Hero series and shooter behemoth Call of Duty: World at War probably had a lot to do with that.
Podcast: Kombo Breaker - Episode 49: David Ellis of 1UP and Video Games (Go figure...)

This is the one before we go crazy with #50. Episode #49 is a fantastic conversation with David Ellis of 1UP.

For those that don't know, David recently took the reigns of 1UP's new podcast, 4 Guys 1UP, in the wake of Garnett Lee moving on to an opportunity with GameFly Media. Make sure you check out their show! As of writing this preview up they've only published their first episode; no time like the present to become a fan! David took some time out of his schedule to hang out and talk games and podcasting with the Kombo Breaker team.

Listen in to hear us talk about BioShock 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Guitar Hero, Sean being awful at Modern Warfare and Matt avoiding dream-shattering defeat in the broken(?) Need for Speed: Shift.

If you're new to the show, make sure you subscribe on iTunes. We'd love some feedback either here or on the iTunes show page itself. Follow us on Twitter (@KomboBreaker) or email us (kombobreaker@kombo.com).

Get pumped for #50, it's going to be ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, 1up, David Perry, BioShock 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Guitar Hero

Review: DJ Hero

Floor filler? The turnaround has been astonishing. Guitar Hero launched in 2005, its first set-list composed extensively of cover versions, with the music industry's nostrils too busy sweeping lustily over cisterns to pay it much heed. Developer Harmonix was virtually required to shuffle up to record label doors, cap in hand, begging for whatever scraps of licensed music were lying around. $2 billion and 25 million sales later, someone else is now wearing the trousers in this increasingly noisy relationship . And so DJ Hero arrives this week with an emperor's fanfare and a marketing budget beyond the wildest fantasies of the original Guitar Hero team. Indeed, as I type this, fizzing flutes are clinking at the DJ Hero London launch bash where, the game's official Twitter feed hics, "DJ Shadow two hour set rocked the house!" Not this one, buddy. But the point is that DJ Shadow features heavily in the game, both as content and semi-shrouded avatar. And he's hardly alone. Jay-Z, Eminem, ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, DJ Hero, Xbox 360, Guitar Hero

Critical Reception: Activision/FreeStyleGames' DJ Hero

This week's edition of Critical Reception examines online reaction to Activision's turntable-based Guitar Hero spinoff DJ Hero, which reviews describe as "a new beginning for the music genre." DJ Hero currently earns a score of 85 out of 100 at Metacritic.com. Game Informer's Matt Helgeson rates DJ Hero at 9 out of 10. "Activision has taken a lot of heat in gamer circles for its perceived shameless exploitation of the Guitar Hero franchise," he admits. ...
