Robin Williams Jokes About Playing Call of Duty Online

Just catching up on this from the Thanksgiving break, here's a funny clip in case you missed it: Robin Williams joking on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon about the people he runs into while playing Call of Duty online.

Though he's discussed this in the past, Williams also spoke about how he named his daughter after Princess Zelda. He then joked that he also had a son named Mario.

Seniors in Oceanside, CA to Game On with New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Nintendo has made a name for itself as a favorite among the elderly with the introduction of Wii Sports, but now they are aiming to get another game into the hands of seniors residing at Fairwinds – Ivey Ranch in Oceanside, California: New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

The goal seems to be to get grandparents to take up the Wii Remote and play with-- or against-- their children and grandchildren. Those in attendance get Mario and Luigi-branded t-shirts, and there will even be a raffle to win a Wii console with a copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii-- certainly a sure-fire way to keep the family visiting.

It should be interesting to see if some of these grandparents are able to hurl a fireball and ride a Yoshi as well as they can bowl. If you're interested in more info, check out the press release after the cut.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Wii, Nintendo, Wii Sports, Mario

GameCareerGuide Game Design Challenge Results: Sidekick

The decision to add a sidekick to a game series is not one to be taken lightly -- it changes the dynamic of the entire game, and if you get it wrong, you risk irritating players with a needless addition. That said, the rewards can be strong. What would Mario be without Luigi as a foil? Adding Tails to Sonic 2 allowed the players to redefine what the game's gameplay could be and bring a ...

Final Fantasy XIII's Cid Steps Forward

In the multiverse, there are many constants. When a Megatron appears, there will be an Optimus to fight him. Sonic and Eggman, Mario and Koopa, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Shredder, and so forth.

And while not quite in the same dynamic, every time there is a Final Fantasy, there is a Cid. And so it is for Final Fantasy XIII, as Shonen Jump reveals.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Final Fantasy XIII, Sonic, Eggman, Mario, Koopa, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Morning Hangover -- What Holiday Games Did You Beat (Or Try To)?

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story is a great game (if a little long), one that I started during one of my two days of packed holiday travel for Thanksgiving. 17 hours later, I'm still not done with the latest Mario & Luigi . Technically, I'm just about done. I'm traversing through the final dungeon, so it should wrap up in the next hour or so. Because I was away from home, I wasn't able to play (let alone finish) Assassin's Creed II . Ah well. Which games were you able to finish over the holidays?

Planets, flying, stars and even Petey Piranha.

One game pioneers a genre, others follow. That's the way the industry has always worked. But here's one example of a developer getting a little too carried away with the CTRL-C, CTRL-V commands.
What Was Your Best (And Worst) Black Friday Experience?

You know what I did on Black Friday? Nothing. I drank beer. I played Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (which is awesome, by the way) . I learned how to play spades (and I'm pretty good). But no doubt many G4 readers decided to brave the cold morning air for a chance at a deal. Were you one of those folks? If you decided to head into the Black Friday crowd, tell me about your best and worst experiences with the crowd and if you actually managed to score a deal. Friends, gather round.
It's story time.

My Games This Weekend - 11.27.09 - Mario, Metroid, Turtles, and WWE

I always tend to overestimate how much gaming I can get done in a given amount of time. As such, I didn't get to play much of what I had planned for yesterday. I did get to beat the 3 main cups in Super Mario Kart, though.

This weekend, I'll be playing more WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010, might manage to get some fun with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles* IV: Turtles in Time in there, and I'd like to sit down with Metroid Prime Trilogy for a bit. And around all that, I wouldn't be surprised if the wife and I take up New Super Mario Bros. Wii and grab some more Star Coins and find some more exits.

How much of this actually gets done remains to be seen.

So, those are my games this weekend; what are yours?

* Oh, and a quick reminder to those interested: CW4Kids had Turtles Forever on last week, but if you missed it, they're airing it in parts over the next three Saturdays, starting tomorrow. Everyone's been raving about it, so if you're a fan (even a former fan) of the TMNT, be sure not to miss it!

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mario, Metroid, Metroid Prime Trilogy, New Super Mario Bros Wii

Speed-Run Showcase: Super Mario Frustration in 2:36, and a Peek at Super Mario Forever

Speedrun guru Ross Miller of OriginalNintendo.net has dropped a couple of interesting new videos our way.

Some of you may be familiar with a hack of the original Super Mario Bros. called "Super Mario Bros. Frustration," which is designed to be head-bustingly difficult. Nonetheless, Miller has managed to succeed in besting this torturous game design:

And that's not all.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mario

Random Video of the Day: Mario & Queen Perform "Don't Stop Me Now"

I see a little silhouetto of a plumber...

This is one of those auto-playing videos of Super Mario World to Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" (which I fully realize the above lyric is not a part of). Your mileage my vary on what you get out of this one, but it has some nice visual tricks.

	    Video Games | | mario queen = awesomeXBox 360 | Playstation 3 | Nintendo Wii

What I like most are the neat little touches. For example, if I'm not mistaken, I think all the dots on the map screen are meant to be the "audience." Then, there is having a different quarter of the screen for each member of the group.

And then beyond that, there are some neat added effects, especially when all four quarters have stuff running together in sync around the halfway point and beyond. All in all, one of the more interesting efforts of this type that I've seen.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mario, PS3, Nintendo, Wii

My Games This Thanksgiving - 11.26.09

Getting this one out of the way early, since I imagine people have places to go, games to eat, and turkeys to play. So this way, maybe they can have their say early on.

Most of my day is being spent right here, of course, but tonight I'm hoping to spend a little time with Super Mario Kart. Which, I should add, still has the best Battle Mode of the entire series (to say nothing of some of my favorite Bowser track music) for my money.

Might try to squeeze in some WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 on the Wii (DS review is in the queue already), and maybe watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze before playing some more TMNT games to help my wife out-- though those will probably come later.

At some point, she may try to squeeze in some Dragon Age: Origins, and we might try to gather some more Star Coins in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

I doubt this will all happen, but those are the prospects. Regardless, I'll just say those are my games this Thanksgiving; what are yours?

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mario, Bowser, Wii, DS, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

News: Miyamoto: "I knew I was lying to children"

Past fibs led him to director's chair on NSMBW. Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed how clearing up the bizarre rules he's created for Mario games over the last 30 years led him to working much more closely on New Super Mario Bros. Wii than on most recent Nintendo releases, assuming the role of a director as well as producer. The revelation comes in the latest Iwata Asks, another cosy fireside chat between Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata and design chief Miyamoto. It's the usual mix of reminiscence, banter, insight and stating the obvious from the pair as they look back on Mario's earliest roots as well as the thinking behind New Super Mario Bros. on the DS and the latest Wii game. But if the previous episode's revelation that Miyamoto is addicted to guessing the lengths of objects made you fear for the great man's marbles, this discussion proves that his design sense is still sharp - if sometimes hard for his colleagues to understand. Some highlighted reviews from this week's issue of Famitsu magazine in Japan, covering all the games coming out next week in that country:

- New Super Mario Bros. Wii (10/10/10/10, 40 points): It's no longer news, exactly, when a game receives a perfect score in Famitsu , is it? This is the fourth game this year to get the prize, despite the fact that only 13 titles have scored 40 in the magazine's 23-year history.

"It's just fun moving Mario around!" as one put it. "It's packed with that unwavering Mario-style fun. The difficulty level's high, but just to the point where you feel like you can finish the game if you try hard enough. A masterpiece of 2D action."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mario, Left 4 Dead 2, New Super Mario Bros Wii

With New Super Mario Bros. Wii safely in stores and racking up all kinds of critical praise in Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto was more than happy to sit down with Famitsu magazine this week to discuss some of the details behind his latest game's design.

Some of the highlights:

- Why did Nintendo decide to have two Toad characters accompany Mario and Luigi in multiplayer? "Mario and Luigi are the same as always, of course, and suggestions for the other two characters included Wario and Waluigi, Toad, and Princess Peach," Miyamoto said. "The thing is that with Wario he'd need to have a fart attack, Peach would have to be able to fly with her skirt, and so on. With this game we wanted every character to play the same way."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wario, Mario, Luigi, Toad, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Shigeru Miyamoto

Fire Underwater: Miyamoto Explains Mario's Unnatural World

The world of Shigeru Miyamoto's Super Mario Bros is so familiar to most longtime gamers that few question its logic: Blocks floating in mid-air, fireballs that survive underwater, flying raccoon costumes. But revisiting the world of Mario with a new development team for New Super Mario Bros Wii, Miyamoto says he was prompted to take another look at the surrealism of the world he's created. "This time around, there were lots of discussions about judging ...

New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Wii - GR Review

Smashing things with your butt once again.

If you're as old as I am, chances are one of your fondest gaming memories is probably receiving a brand-spanking new top-of-line, high-tech 8-bit NES one Christmas morning long, long ago (I know, I'm dating myself here). And back in the old days of walking uphill both ways, in the snow, naked and being chased by rabid dogs, bubblegum was a nickel and consoles actually came with games, but back then we called them “cartridges”. The NES pre-packed experience was something involving the relentless murder of ducks and a little game known as Super Mario Bros . It is my theory that every Mario game since then has been a thinly veiled attempt to recapture the essence of that overwhelming thrill and excitement.

[image1]They've actually succeeded a couple times too: Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World come to mind as the two best examples I can think of with New Super Mario Bros. for the DS a close third. The new New Super Mario ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Wii, Mario, NES

REVIEW: New Super Mario Bros. is Platforming Joy

What The Game's About
When Bowser Jr. and the Koopalings spring a booby-trapped birthday cake on Princess Peach, Mario, Luigi, and two mushroom retainer Toads chase their escaping airship across the Mushroom Kingdom through a healthy dose of traditional side-scrolling platforming action for up to four players. Expect to make full use of Mario's signature power-ups such as the Super Mushroom and Fire Flower along with new aids like the Ice Flower that freezes enemies in throwable ice blocks, the Penguin Suit that combines the power of the Ice Flower with enhanced mobility in the water and on frozen ground, and the Propeller Suit that allows for a quick on-demand flight through an adventure suited for mushroom power pros and cautious casual gamers alike.

What's Hot
Above all else, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a prime classic-style Super Mario Bros. game given a new coat of paint and firing on all cylinders.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii Get's a 40/40

Last week's issue of Japanese Famitsu Weekly awarded New Super Mario Bros. Wii with a perfect score. This adds to the game's positive critical reception as well as Famitsu's own quickly-growing pantheon of perfect score awards.

With perfect scores, the four Famitsu reviewers for New Super Mario Bros. Wii praised pretty much every aspect of the game from the singleplayer to the multiplayer. First and foremost however was the responsiveness of that game's controls.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the first traditional Mario game and the second game featuring the character Mario to get a perfect 40/40 from Famitsu. Famitsu has now awarded more perfect scores in 2009 than any previous year.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Mario

Morning Hangover -- What's Your Thanksgiving Travel Game?

Welcome to Morning Hangover -- an excellent way to start your day with the crew at TheFeed...no matter what you're recovering from. Every morning you'll hear musings from our editors and have the chance to share your thoughts on what's going on in the gaming world.

Many of us (yours truly included) will be spending a significant amount of time at the airport over the coming week. It's a time to pretend Xbox Live and PlayStation Network don't exist and get reacquainted with the DS and PSP. What game will be occupying your time over the Thanksgiving holiday? I'll be hopefully checking out Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story . My last experience with the series ended in tears, as a battery error resulted in a saved game with dozens of hours of progress being erased.
Media: ModNation Racers - Express Yourself Trailer and Customized Gameplay Montage

Two new trailers are now available for ModNation Racers, the game which appears to be to LittleBigPlanet what Super Mario Kart is to Super Mario Bros., except without the actual sharing of characters, and... well, I guess it's an overall pretty bad analogy, really.

Still, what LBP is to platformers, ModNation Racers appears to be to kart racing games, so that's good enough for me. And in the first trailer we have for you today, United Front Games shows how you can express yourself in the game:

Video Games | ModNation Racers | Express Yourself TrailerXBox 360 | Playstation 3 | Nintendo Wii

Even with the racer customization, I can't help but think that a Sackboy download might be a cool addition. Or a Rabbid, for that matter.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, ModNation Racers, Mario, LittleBigPlanet, PS3, Nintendo

Mario Karts, Blobs, and Bit.Trips Round Out Nintendo Downloads

Thursday of this week is turkey day in the U.S., and Nintendo's accompanying downloads definitely bring plenty of goods for us to digest with a total of 13 new downloads. For WiiWare, we have Bit.Trip Void for 600 Wii Points ($6), the latest in Aksys Games' line of retro-inspired arcade shooters. Also available are Harvest Moon: My Little Shop for 1,200 points ($12), which seems to have the features of your typical Harvest Moon game at a downloadable price. Little Tournament Over Yonder for 800 points ($8) is a 1-2 player real-time-strategy game. Finally, Learning with the PooYoos: Episode 1 is an Early Childhood game for 500 Wii Points, targeted at teaching numbers, letters, and shapes for ages 3-6.

As promised , Super Mario Kart from the heady days of the Super NES hits for 800 Wii Points. This is the title that went on to spark the well-known series. Also gracing the Virtual Console is A Boy and His Blob: ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Nintendo, Mario, DSi

Nintendo Download - 11/23/09: Download New BIT.TRIP Kicks, Speeding Karts, Magic Castles and More

I knew Nintendo loves me. You can thank me later, since you guys get to reap the benefits, too.

In all seriousness, the original Super Mario Kart is now available on the Virtual Console for 800 Wii Points, just as promised. What more needs to be said? Well, maybe that in most circumstances, such a title would be all that we get on Virtual Console for the week, but not this time; it is joined by the original NES title A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia for 500 Wii Points as well.

WiiWare is BIT.TRIPping with VOID for 600 Wii Points, while Harvest Moon: My Little Shop commands 1,200, the rather vague Little Tournament Over Yonder for 800, and a rare EC-rated game for 500 in Learning with the PooYoos: Episode 1.

Finally, DSiWare has plenty to choose from, though five are Electroplankton titles at 200 DSi Points a pop. Those are accompanied by myNotebook: Blue, also 200, and Gameloft's Castle Of Magic for 500.

Check out the press release after the cut for more details on each title.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, Wii, Mario, NES, A Boy and His Blob

Nintendo Downloads Include Boy And His Blob And Super Mario Kart

Give thanks to Nintendo. The company is releasing a couple awesome, older titles on WiiWare this week, just in time for Thanksgiving. Available now is A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia and Super Mario Kart ; if you played either game in its original form, you will certainly be nostalgic for these interesting games.
A Boy and His Blob is an NES puzzle game about friendship and magic jelly-beans; it hearkens back to the days when video games were still hard. Super Mario Kart tells the engaging, time-worn tale of a bunch of carts racing around tracks while cartoon characters throw bananas at one another.
Hit the cut for a full list of releases on WiiWare, Virtual Console and DSiWare:

  WiiWare

      BIT.TRIP VOID
      Harvest Moon: My Little Shop
      Little Tournament Over Yonder

I haven't been able to develop the courage to return...until now. It's been long enough.
The pain....has healed.

Denise Kaigler Gone From Nintendo

Part of Nintendo since 2008, Denise Kaigler took over for the long-tenured Perrin Kaplan as vice president of corporate affairs, and since then has given the media a trademark welcome, yet relatively quiet insight into the company's world. Unfortunately, according to the latest installment of IGN's Nintendo Minute, Kaigler seems to stepping outside of the house that Mario built.

Hit the jump for Kaigler's full statement, as well as one from Nintendo. We here at Kombo want to wish Kaigler the very best in her future endeavors.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, Mario

Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, Smash Bros. Coming to Virtual Console

Kotaku is reporting that three of the most desired games for the Wii's Virtual Console are about to make an appearance. This Monday, expect to see Super Mario Kart (SNES) on the service for 800 points. The other two titles, Super Smash Bros. and Pilotwings, will be released on the Virtual Console "sometime this holiday season." Don't take my word for it, but I wouldn't be surprised if the former of the two came out on the Monday before Christmas.

Is this beginning of a slew of most-requested games to be released on the Virtual Console? Many fans, including myself, feel that Earthbound is long overdue for an appearance. Maybe Nintendo is finally starting to pay attention to its fans.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mario, Wii Virtual Console, Nintendo

Original Super Nintendo kart racer arrives this Monday; Pilotwings SNES and Super Smash Bros. N64 to follow this holiday season.
Since the day the Wii launched, Nintendo's Virtual Console library of games has offered some of the company's all-time classics in downloadable form. Several of the service's more notable omissions will be addressed this holiday season, as Nintendo told GameSpot a trio of fondly remembered titles will soon arrive on the Wii Shop Channel.

The original Super Mario Kart will give gamers a chance to re-examine the series' roots.
Starting this Monday, the original Super Nintendo version of Super Mario Kart will be available as a Virtual Console title. Originally released in 1992, Super Mario Kart was the first installment in the long-running series, which has recently seen hits in the form of Mario Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii. When it launches, Super Mario Kart will sell for 800 Wii points ($8).

Random Video of the Day: Death Metal Bowser's Castle Theme

The folks at CollegeHumor.com suggest that "If you can't handle this, then you shouldn't be inside a kidnapper dinosaurs death castle."

See more funny videos and funny pictures at CollegeHumor.

And of course, my first reaction near the end would be "what? But he doesn't get any points for killing him that way!" And my wife was thinking the same thing, more or less (along the lines of "why have fireballs if you're not going to use them?").

Now, I just have to wonder what a full Mario soundtrack in death metal would sound like. In any case, I do wish Nintendo would remix that theme sometime.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Bowser, Mario, Nintendo

News: Miyamoto explains NSMB Wii design

"It's been a nostalgic time for me." Shigeru Miyamoto has given an interesting interview to Famitsu - translated and summarised by 1UP - about the design processes behind New Super Mario Bros. Wii. It's the most closely he's been involved with day-to-day game design in a while, he said. "It's been a nostalgic time for me. I've been getting into the game and making the sort of fine-tuning adjustments that I made with Super Mario World and Mario 3." Miyamoto says that the decision to go with "a very orthodox Mario" in the modern day and age was "courageous", but motivated by the decision to focus on multiplayer.

It has been eighteen years since the last 2D console Mario title (19 if you're in Japan, 17 if you're in Europe), Super Mario World. And in that time, much has transpired in the video game industry, and at Nintendo itself.

TrueGameHeadz has assembled an enlightening list of 15 such things which have changed in the intervening years, including how many Miyamoto games have been released, how many presidents Nintendo of America has had, and how much the revenue of the video game industry has grown.

You can check out the full list here, and see how many of these things you remember as they once were.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mario, Nintendo, Shigeru Miyamoto
