Mass Effect 2 New Single-Player Hands-On Preview

One time, I asked Mass Effect 2 project director Casey Hudson if, when we play Mass Effect 3, Commander Shepard will be powerful enough to crack a planet in half. Hudson chuckled at the suggestion before giving an elusive answer about the kinds of epic motions that will come in the third installment. Well, after playing a quick hands-on demo of ME2, it seems like we're on the right track in terms of crazy big battles/moments in Mass Effect ; in this demo, I try to take on, and lose several times, against a freakin' gunship.

Sure, a gunship isn't quite the "It's me versus the Death Star!" moment I'm dreading for ME3, but it's still plenty intimidating. I mean, it'd be like trying to take on a heavily armed AC-130 all by yourself; it's doable, but it's also something that's difficult enough to spawn a lot of queries online . It's also another example of how ME2 follows BioWare's solid tradition of creating intimidating ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate

The PlayStation 3 version of Dragon Age: Origins has been criticized for framerate issues, but BioWare says that they are now familiar with the platform. Consequently, the studio is 'definitely' planning on putting more projects on the PS3.

"We did partner with Edge of Reality, so we partnered with folks who have had the experience, and that was a good process where we actually had some folks that knew how to do it but also, in general, just worked together with them," co-founder Greg Zeschuk told Joystiq .

"We have quite a few people working in-house as well. We think it's one of the key platforms, obviously, so we're definitely going to be doing PS3. You know, I can't say anything about Mass Effect in that regard but you know, I can definitely say? other things we do will definitely be on PS3."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PS3, BioWare, Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect

BioWare to Keep Developing on PS3

BioWare is apparently satisfied with PS3 development, as they have expressed intentions to continue in-house PS3 development in the future. They have denied any effect this may have on the Mass Effect franchise.

BioWare, unlike many traditionally PC developers, seems to have become comfortable with PS3 development with that version of Dragon Age Origins. "It was great going through the experience of making Dragon Age, getting familiar with and understanding the PS3," said BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuk to Joystiq in an interview, acknowledging the differences in the platform. "Again, every platform is different, but now I think we're at the position where future PS3 stuff will be really solid."

The logical thing to ask about after this was the possibility of Mass Effect games appearing on the PS3. BioWare continues to neither confirm nor deny.

"We're not saying anything about Mass Effect for PS3. I don't know anything about that! That's crazy talk. I don't know anything about that," Zeschuk ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PS3, BioWare, Mass Effect, PC, Dragon Age: Origins

Focusing more on PS3, but Mass Effect conversion is "crazy talk".

BioWare is to place greater focus on PS3 going forward, with a pledge to handle all PS3 development in-house, says studio co-founder Greg Zeschuk.
News: Mass Effect 2 will use Dragon Age DRM

Plus: PC system requirements revealed. EA has revealed that Mass Effect 2 will use the same DRM copy protection as Dragon Age: Origins. This involves a rudimentary disc check and no online authentication, unlike the intrusive SecuROM program used in Mass Effect 1. EA has also uncovered the PC Mass Effect 2 system requirements, which won't require a fortune to meet even at recommended level.
Mass Effect 2 Official Boxart Reveal... Again?!

Several months ago, Bioware unveiled the "official" boxart for their upcoming Mass Effect sequel... or so we thought. It looks like there has been a change of heart over at the development studio, because Mass Effect 2 has been given a brand new cover.

Those of you who plan on picking up the super-sleek collector's edition need not fret, as this change is only being applied to the standard edition. While there has been no official word from Bioware as to why the boxart was changed, it is most likely due to their unhappiness with the initial art. If you ask me, I think they both are pretty ugly.

To see the cover a bit larger, click the link below.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mass Effect 2, BioWare, Mass Effect

It's been a while, but Bioware is finally providing 360 owners with a sequel to the massively popular Mass Effect franchise. As I'm sure you can recall, the first installment revolutionized the role-playing genre in a number of ways. The new approach to dialog between characters created a cinematic presentation, and the KOTOR inspired combat provided a fresh take on the genre. That being said, there is plenty of room for improvement in the sequel. Check the video below to see just how well the Vanguard class operates under the game's updated gameplay.

BioWare Comments on Possibility of Multiplayer in Future Dragon Age and Mass Effect Games

As the debate over whether or not multiplayer substantially improves a game rages on, BioWare recently shared their thoughts on the possibility of such an inclusion in future Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles with VideoGamer.com:

"Sure, we would consider it," says Dr. Ray Muzyka, company co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer. "We haven't announced anything on that front yet, but those are interesting ideas. They could make a great gameplay experience. Whether we'll do them or not remains to be decided."

He is quick to point out, however, that such inclusion would require more than simply tacking on a 2P to the single-player campaign. "It could [detract from the experience]," he said. "It might depend on how you do it."

"It's hard to weave a great single-player storyline into a multiplayer experience," he continues. "It's not impossible. Co-op play is all the rage these days, having made it into everything from Resident Evil 5 to Demon's Souls . It hasn't quite made it into BioWare's RPGs yet, but it is something that the studio is willing to consider (via Videogamer ).

Asked whether future Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles will allow players to work together as parties, co-founder Ray Muzyka said, "Sure. We would consider it. We haven't announced anything on that front yet, but those are interesting ideas."

"They could make a great gameplay experience. Whether we'll do them or not remains to be decided."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, BioWare, Resident Evil 5, Demon's Souls, Mass Effect

Mass Effect Is Steam's Latest Weekend Deal

If you haven't played Mass Effect yet, here's your chance. Steam has temporarily slashed Mass Effect's price, with the PC version now available for a mere $10.

While the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect was critically acclaimed, it was also criticized for its poor inventory, glitches and long load times. The PC version fixed most of those issues, making it the superior version in the eyes of most fans.

Since Mass Effect is part of Steam's regular "Weekend Deal" promotion, you only have a couple days to pick it up. And for those who do, there's still plenty of time to work on a character to transfer over to Mass Effect 2.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mass Effect, Steam, PC, Xbox 360, Mass Effect 2

Continuing the recent string of announcements regarding special/limited editions of upcoming monster titles, BioWare has revealed details about the Mass Effect 2 Collector’s Edition being released alongside the standard edition on Jan. 26.

Mass Effect 2 Collector's Edition Revealed

With basically every single major release these days getting the added bonus of a metal-clad multi-disc special edition, it comes as no surprise that Mass Effect 2 will be getting in on the trend when it releases in January.

EA announced today that the Collector's Edition, which will be shipped in limited quantities for both the Xbox 360 and PC, will come packed in the usual tin case, and will also include an "Art of Mass Effect 2" art book, a behind-the-scenes DVD, and the first issue of the Mass Effect Redemption comic series.

"We're really excited to roll out this Collectors' Edition featuring so many unique items, including special Collectors' Edition armor and weapons and content that will surprise Mass Effect fans," said Dr. Ray Muzyka of BioWare and EA. "The limited edition comic book and bonus DVD will really enhance and expand the overall Mass Effect 2 experience."

Of most interest is the Collector's Edition price tag. While most Collector's Editions can hit 80 or 90 bucks (or most ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Mass Effect 2, Electronic Arts, Mass Effect, Xbox 360, PC

Bioware spilled the beans on their Collectors' Edition plans for Mass Effect 2 this morning. Priced at $69.99 on Xbox 360 and $59.99 on PC, this premium version of the Mass Effect sequel comes bundled in a tin case with loads of extras.

The Collectors' Edition of Mass Effect 2 will feature a 48-page, hardcover art book, the first issue of the Mass Effect: Redemption comic, a bonus DVD with making-of footage, and exclusive in-game weapons and armor (pictured above). It's scheduled to ship on January 26 -- the same day as the regular version of the game.

Between the Collectors' Edition armor and the numerous other exclusive outfits that are available as bonus content from Dragon Age and preorder incentives , players ought to have plenty of fashion options when Mass Effect 2 launches early next year.
