Sony Offers Free Comics for PSP Reader Trial

With the release of the v6.20 firmware update for the PSP earlier this week, Sony added the new Digital Comics Reader to their handheld. Unfortunately, comics won't actually be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store until next month, but in the meanwhile you can try the reader out for yourself by using a free promotional code to download a trial issue today.
You can head over to Sony's Digital Comics website to get the promotional code. Then visit the PlayStation Store on your PSP and enter it, and it'll allow you to download the first issue of the new Transformers: All Hail Megatron comic series (European owners will get the first issue of Aleister Arcane).
The issue will take up about 40MB of space. Enjoy.

PlayStation 3 | PSN to be basis of Sony iTunes rival, accounts top 33 million

PS3 and PSP's online component will form backbone of Sony Online Service, a content-delivery system common to HDTVs, Blu-ray players, PCs, MP3 players, e-readers, and mobile devices.
In addition to confirming 3D gaming for the PlayStation 3 was coming in 2010 , yesterday's Sony Corp. global strategy presentation also revealed that a premium subscription service will be added to the PlayStation Network . Those two initiatives were revealed as part of a far larger vision which will see Sony try and overtake rival Apple's iTunes service with a common content distribution system for all its media products.

Sony aims to bring together all its products via one common online platform.

Temporarily named the Sony Online Service (SOS), the ambitious initiative aims to offer a single user experience across all its network media devices, from portable media players to large-screen Bravia HDTVs. At the presentation, Sony ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Sony, PS3, PSP

DS | Big in Japan Nov. 9-15: J-League Pro Soccer Club

Sega dethrones Winning Eleven with its own footie sim for the PSP; Sony's portable, PS3 nearly tie at top of hardware chart.
Konami's World Soccer Winning Eleven 2010 (Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 internationally) opened big in Japan for the week of November 2-8, shifting some 217,000 units. One week later, and a new soccer game has worked its way to the top of Media Create's weekly sales chart; this one with a decidedly Japanese bent. For the week of November 9-15, Sega's J-League Pro Soccer Club o Tsukurou! 6: Pride of J on the PSP scored big with 84,966 units sold.

Beyond J-League, the mid-November week had a number of charting debuts. Namco Bandai scored with Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, as the PlayStation 3 edition secured third with 57,972. Square Enix's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers for the Wii, which is due in North America on December 26, ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, The Club, PSP, DS, PS3, Wii

Watch the Video Walkthrough of the Newly Released adhocParty

At long last, the adhocParty feature has been released to those lucky enough to own both a PS3 and PSP. With it, you'll now be able to play some of your PSP games online that previously only allowed for ad-hoc multiplayer. One of the unfortunate drawbacks worth mentioning upfront is that you won't be able to make use of adhocParty if your PS3 connects to your router wirelessly. That's due to the fact that the PS3 is already communicating with your PSP wirelessly, so the only option for it to be able to connect to the internet -- at least at this point -- is through a wired connection. Hopefully an alternative method will be made available at some point to those, like myself, who simply can't connect wire their console to the internet -- maybe a USB dongle of some sort would do the trick?

So if you've passed all the caveats of having to own both a PSP and PS3, a supported PSP game with ad-hoc multiplayer, and a ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PSP, PS3

PSP, PS3 Lead Weekly Japanese Sales Charts

Sony pulled off a two-pronged victory in Japan this week, as the PSP and PlayStation 3 captured the one and two sales spots, respectively, topping the typical weekly dominator, Nintendo DSi. Sony's PSP handheld sold 38,770 units for the week ended November 15, Japanese tracking firm Media Create said Friday. Its home console counterpart, PS3, secured a close second place with 38,498. During the prior week, PS3 outsold all other hardware with 48,925 sold during ...

PSP | Video Q&A: Sony explains PSP adhocParty

Kristin Neirinckx discusses how PSP owners can use their PS3s to play multiplayer non-infrastructure games over the Web.
Starting today, Sony Computer Entertainment began offering adhocParty to North American PSP owners . The application lets PSP owners use their PlayStation 3s to play normally local-only wireless ad hoc games online much like they would with the game's infrastructure mode. The service was launched in Japan last year.

Ain't no party like an adhocParty...unless you count infrastructure mode.

The free application can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store as part of the update that went out this afternoon. Though the PS3 and PSP will communicate wirelessly, it will require that the PS3 have a wired connection to the Internet. The service will also support voice and text chat, with friends meeting inside lobbies of 10 areas called "worlds."

Sony's latest attempt to broaden the feature set of the PlayStation Portable comes to fruition today with the release of the v6.20 firmware update. The primary feature you'll find after downloading and installing the firmware will be the option to download the digital comics reader. The digital comics service launches on the PlayStation Network in December and will allow you to download and read comics on your PSP either page-by-page or frame-by-frame. Sony is promising a free sample will soon be available so that you can get a taste of what it's like to read comics on a PSP screen, and whether or not that's something your eyes will be able to tolerate.

Back in August, Sony claimed that there would be over 1,000 comics available in December from Marvel including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and X-Men. You can see that the preview image above, first shown in August, also has Iron Man and Civil War , but there's no ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PSP, Sony

Japanese publisher Marvelous Entertainment has focused heavily on Wii and PSP releases in 2009, but the company has found a considerable difference in its success on the two platforms: nearly all of its PSP games this year were profitable, while the opposite was true for Wii. According to data presented in a company earnings conference and reported by Siliconera, four out of the company's five PSP releases in the first fiscal half proved to be ...

News: LittleBigPlanet on PSP Store today

Despite US digital delay. Sony has told Eurogamer that the PSP version of LittleBigPlanet will be uploaded to the PlayStation Store in Europe today ahead of the game's retail release tomorrow. It will cost £21.99 online. The news comes after US gamers were told they would probably have to wait a little while for LBP due to "hiccups", in the words of senior producer Mark Green on the US PlayStation blog. The game came out in shops there on Tuesday. Green said Sony was "currently working around the clock to get this issue worked out". In a separate statement to Kotaku, SCEA said, "The goal is to have the titles available on the same day, and that is usually the case." Read more... > >

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, LittleBigPlanet, Sony, PSP, The Mark, SCEA

Upcoming AdhocParty Won't Support Every PSP Game With Adhoc Multiplayer

Not many PSP games support multiplayer through infrastructure (aka Internet), with relying on adhoc (aka local) to accomplish head-to-head and co-op modes. Sony came up with a clever solution to the issue in Japan with adhocParty, which funnels adhoc multiplayer through your PlayStation 3 and allows for online multiplayer on a PSP. More steps, but it works. adhocParty is coming to US "soon," but there's a small catch: it won't work with every PSP game with adhoc support.
This was the case with the Japanese version of adhocParty, too. Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed to me this afternoon the issue would carry over to the US version.
"It will be a similar situation with adhocParty in the US," said a SCEA spokesperson. "We assume most folks will gravitate toward titles such as Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and Gran Turismo , but adhoc party mode may not be fully supported in every game with adhoc multiplayer."

Sony Explains LittleBigPlanet PSP Downloadable Version Delay

Sony’s LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation Portable went on sale yesterday, but what PSP owners, especially PSP Go owners, might have noticed is that the game has yet to show up on the PlayStation Store in downloadable form like it was meant to.

The good news is that Sony is fully aware of the problem, and they are working to solve the issue at this very moment. I contacted Sony to find out what was causing the delay, and I was told that Sony is having some issues with the PlayStation Network, but that those issues should be resolved shortly.
So while you’re waiting to download your very own copy of the game, feel free to check out my review to find out more about this adorable portable platformer.

Opinion: Back to 1981 with the PSP Go

A nice piece of kit - if you can make it work.

Emotional extremes recently ensued on receipt of a parcel containing a PSP Go. Having had a go on a Go, as it were, at E3, and been impressed by its industrial design, excitement instantly struck. Half an hour later - when I was near to getting the infernal object up and running - I had passed through annoyance and disillusion had set in.
Sony Announces Another Loopy PSP Game

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan revealed the first details behind Hyakuman-Ton no Barabara today, another installment in SCEJ's really weird, original, indie-fused line of PSP titles. This one, developed by Acquire (who also made NIS's Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! ), will come out in UMD and downloadable form this February in Japan; no US release has been announced.

As you might be able to tell from the Japanese teaser site available right now, Barabara is centered around giant flying fortresses that seem to be built out of patchwork quilt pieces. You control a small army of people that latch on to these marauding ships and attack it, gradually creating cracks in the hull. When these cracks meet up with each other, a section of the ship falls off and plummets earthward. You repeat this until the entire fortress crashes, receiving bonuses for the amount of ship tonnage you managed to shear off.

Review: Invizimals

Imaginary menagerie. Small as they are, the shadows of the little Pokemon loom large over Sony's new camera-based creature-capture game. As in the evergreen adventures of Pikachu and pals, you discover and catch critters, level them up through combat and then battle your friends to see who has amassed the toughest collection. The twist here is that you're not seeking the creatures out in some whimsical top-down fantasy land, but in real life, using the PSP camera to coax invisible monsters out of hiding. This is all established through the stodgy single-player Story Mode, which explains how Kenichi, an enthusiastic worker in Sony's R&D; department, has discovered that the PSP camera can detect lifeforms invisible to the human eye - Invizimals. Luckily, you have the sort of aura that attracts these mini beasts, and so you're roped in to help his studies. This involves hopping around a world map, undertaking various missions to capture specific Invizimals, and learning the intricacies of ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Invizimals, Sony, PSP

LittleBigPlanet PSP

If it genuinely is true that little things please little minds, then you may well have to consider us a bunch of pea-brains; LittlebigPlanet has arrived on the PSP and we’ve got big old smiles plastered across our faces! With this portable, pocket-sized version of Media Molecule’s modern classic, Studio Cambridge have managed to replicate the original with glorious authenticity.
The original LittleBigPlanet was actually met with a strangely mixed reception; though a critical darling and multiple award winner, it achieved solid if unspectacular sales and was decried by some as being the emperor’s new clothes; a fairly standard platformer garnished with posable sackboys and an emphasis on user generated content. In honesty, a year after release it is easy to forget the effortless charm exuded by the chirpy little sackboy and his wonderfully (arts and) crafted universe, but now LittleBigPlanet PSP has arrived as a timely reminder as to why we so loved the little hessian chap ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, LittleBigPlanet, PS3, Sony, PSP

REVIEW: LittleBigPlanet for the PSP is Like a Tasty Sundae Missing the Hot Fudge Known as Multiplayer

What the Game's About
LittleBigPlanet PSP is the continuation to one of the best games of 2008 that forever changed the landscape of gaming. The game centers around the concept of "Play, Create and Share." More than just marketing lingo, those three words best describe LittleBigPlanet. The PSP version is no different. LittleBigPlanet on the PSP can boast that only a few features had to be left on the cutting room floor. The platforming is good, the creation tools are just as beefy and the winning charm oozes out with the creativity on display. LittleBigPlanet is going to fill a large hole in the PSP library thanks to the crafty work of Sony Cambridge and MediaMolecule.

What's Hot
LittleBigPlanet might share the same name with the PS3 game but this a game all its own. The locations are new and there are additional costumes and stickers to further customize the look and style of the Sackboys and Sackgirls you play as. The stages are diverse and varied. They will take you from an ancient middle eastern ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, LittleBigPlanet, PSP, PS3

LittleBigPlanet PSP Review

Sony wastes no time in bringing their top-shelf PS2 and PS3 franchises to the PSP, but putting Little Big Planet on PSP always seemed weird. Maybe because the original game was made out to be the ultimate PS3 title; a mindblowing convergence of visual splendor and internet connectivity. Really, though, it was just a good action game, and no matter what, LBP is still as great (and great-feeling) a game as ever on PSP, even though in some ways, it may be a little too faithful for its own good.

Even though this PSP version is just called "Little Big Planet" with no alliterative subtitles attached, it's not a straight port. The single-player story levels are all new, and take on the same globetrotting-with-a-light-dusting-of-stereotypes theme as the original.
