Nintendo Showing Vitality Sensor, Compatible Games at E3 2010

No doubt the biggest what-the-hell moment of E3 2009 was the reveal of Nintendo's Wii Vitality Sensor, a device that will read a players pulse to... well, we're still not sure, because Nintendo didn't give many details. And now it appears it'll be exactly one year later when those details will finally be filled in: Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said they plan to show off the device at E3 next year, along with the first compatible games.
"We will show off the Vitality Sensor with software [at the show]," Fils-Aime succinctly said to Kotaku. "I'm not going to give you any more hints beyond that." This seems to suggest their original intention to release the device "not too late in the next year," according to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata back in August, is probably no longer the case.
E3 2010 is scheduled to take place June 15-17 next year, so we have exactly that much time between now and then to ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, E3, Reggie Fils-Aime, Wii

News: Wii Vitality Sensor games for E3 2010

Fils-Aime pumped about showing more. An update on the Wii Vitality Sensor and a first look at its software applications are already part of Nintendo's plans for E3 2010, according to a new interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. Although he offered no more details about the Vitality Sensor, which reads biometric data from a person's finger, the relatively frank interview on Kotaku did offer some insight into Nintendo's other future plans. Fils-Aime admitted that the company's policy of only starting heavy marketing on new games a few weeks prior to their release has not proven as successful for less mainstream titles.
Reggie Fils-Aime on New SMB Wii, Zelda, Red Steel 2, First Party Sales, Third Parties, and Vitality Sensor

When Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime speaks, he usually has plenty to say, and his recent talk with Kotaku's Stephen Totilo is no exception.

Their discussion tackled a number of topics, from his desire to see New Super Mario Bros. Wii presented with online options to keeping quiet about The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, from third-parties not releasing their top titles from other platforms on the Wii to Nintendo's own first-party shortcomings, and from disappointment that Red Steel 2 was pushed back to when we can expect to see more about the Wii Vitality Sensor.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo, Red Steel 2, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, New Super Mario Bros Wii

Next Wii to have more than just HD, New Console "Far into the Future"

It's clear that not only video games, but the entertainment industry in general, is transitioning into an HD exclusive era. With both the PS3 and 360 capable of taking advantage of the benefits that come from high-definition, Nintendo has remained reluctant to go along with this tech-focused trend. Why haven't we seen an HD Wii yet? What is holding Nintendo back? Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime answers these questions quite simply.

"The way we at Nintendo do things is, you know, when we will move to a new generation, it's because there are some fundamental things the [current] console cannot do. What that says is that simply the addition of HD capability will not be the next step for us. There will be more to it. There will be additional capability. There will be additional elements, and, given that, it is far into the future," Fils-Aime told Kotaku.

New capabilities? Additional elements? Sounds like typical Nintendo to me. It should be clear by now that Nintendo works against the grain of ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Nintendo, Wii, Reggie Fils-Aime, PS3

Fils-Aime: Wii HD 'Will Not Be The Next Step For Us'

The Wii is the home console with the largest userbase, and yet many big-budget blockbusters, like record-breaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and highly-anticipated Assassin's Creed 2, only release on more powerful platform. Perhaps this is why many industry-watchers -- most vocally, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter -- predict that Nintendo will release an edition of the Wii capable of rendering higher-definition graphics, thereby closing the technology gap that still keeps the console just outside ...

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime says he would've "loved" online multiplayer in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but at the end of the day it was the developers' decision. With New Super Mario Bros. Wii now on the market, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime hasn't been shy about extolling the virtues of its multiplayer, saying that he thinks it will satisfy even the most "jaded, even your most competitive player." However, he also admitted to wishing that it was online capable.

"This was a decision made purely by the developers," he told Kotaku .

"They believe this experience, in the same room, to be elbowing your friends and family members as you're playing the game [is ideal]. It was really their decision. I personally would have loved for it to be online capable as well, but having played the game, I really can't fault it for not being online multiplayer."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, New Super Mario Bros, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Nintendo, Reggie Fils-Aime

As an entertainment company, Nintendo competes with Apple's iPhone and its ever-growing suite of applications. But Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says Nintendo's deep game offerings put the company in a favorable position against the App Store's more bite-sized offerings. "Consumers have only a limited amount of time for entertainment, so we compete with Apple," Fils-Aime said in a televised CNBC interview today. "We compete with your program [on CNBC]; we compete with books ...

Fils-Aime Likes Nintendo's Chances Against Competing Motion Controls

Though there are those who seem to believe the Wii Remote is destined for an early grave, thanks to the likes of Sony's Wand and perhaps Microsoft's Project Natal even more so, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils Aime isn't worried about the competing tech.

At the BMO Capital Markets' Digital Entertainment conference in New York, Fils-Aime said that "We applaud anything that will further expand the market of game players; it's in everyone's best interest."

"But all of this talk around new motion controllers does make me think about the people who initially said that the Wii Remote was just a fad," he added. "I wonder what happened to those people?"

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo, Wii, Sony, Microsoft, Project Natal

Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime Makes The Case For The Nintendo DSi XL

There's another DS coming early next year. It doesn't add any significant features the DS or DSi doesn't have, but it does feature a much larger screen. Why would someone want to pick up a DSi XL, then? Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime made the case for the DSi XL during the BMO Capital Markets "Digital Entertainment Conference" this morning.
"Its [DSi XL] purpose isn't just to make things bigger for the player, but to attract observers, as well," said Fils-Aime. "With an improved view angle, it begins to mimic the extended appeal of Wii. As more people watch the action, more want to get involved and in the process, new players are born."
It's the social DS. Would you use one?

Apparently yesterday's news of 1.2 million U.K. sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was just the tip of the iceberg. Activision sent out word today that internal estimates pin the game at a whopping 4.7 million copies sold on day-one, in the U.S. and U.K. alone. Subtracting the U.K. numbers from the report yesterday, that puts first-day U.S. sales at around 3.5 million. In terms of cash generated, Activision estimates the game brought in $310 million already.

"The Call of Duty franchise has become a cultural phenomenon showing the power of video games as an entertainment medium," said CEO Mike Griffith in the press release. We don't have a breakdown of sales by console, and we likely won't until next month's NPD numbers come in. But, if each console sold the same amount, all of them have already topped a million sales. Reggie Fils-Aime is wagering on New Super Mario Bros. Wii beating out just the Xbox 360 ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Modern Warfare 2, Activision, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty, Reggie Fils-Aime

Over the holiday season on one format. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime reckons that New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell either the PS3 or Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2. Asked by GTTV (thanks Kotaku) whether Mario's latest could best Infinity Ward's FPS, Fils-Aime at first said, "Well, Modern Warfare 2's on two platforms, right?" When host Geoff Keighley asked whether it would beat one of the two console SKUs, he replied, "So, absolutely. I say unequivocally." "On one particular platform?
News: New Zelda may not be out next year

Nintendo's not committing to 2010. Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has hinted there may be a bit of a wait in store for the next Wii instalment in the Zelda series. "We haven't committed to Zelda in 2010," he told GameTrailers (as spotted by VG247). That's not to say a release next year isn't possible, and Nintendo has discussed such a possibility before. At E3 2009, Shigeru Miyamoto said he was aiming for a 2010 release - although he made no promises. For a company that's long been notorious for delaying their games, is it any surprise to see they'd be cagey about committing to anything so early in a project's development? Speaking to Geoff Keighley on the latest episode of GameTrailers TV, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was very deliberate in not setting a release timeframe for the new Legend of Zelda in development for the Wii.
"We haven't committed to Zelda in 2010," Reggie elusively said. Keighley clarified that Miyamoto has so far said the game is "tracking" for 2010. "That's what he said, and we'll see how that continues to develop," retorted Reggie.
He did, however, reconfirm that Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M are committed to 2010, so that's at least two big titles to look forward to next year, Wii fans. And looking more toward the immediate future, Reggie also made a bold challenge to Infinity Ward: He predicted that New ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo

Nintendo Talks Wii Zelda, The Existence Of Wii HD And Modern Warfare 2

Soon, Nintendo will drop its biggest release of the year, New Super Mario Bros. Wi i. It's being released in the days after Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has been released, widely expected to be one, if not the, biggest releases of the year (Activision's CEO said it could be the most impressive launch in any entertainment medium -- ever). Nintendo disputed that point in little bit a Gametrailers TV interview with Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime.
Files-Aime believes once the holiday dust has settled, New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell Modern Warfare 2 , if you look at a single platform's sales (i.e. Modern Warfare 2 's sales on Xbox 360).
"I'll take that bet," he joked.
In the same interview, Fils-Aime also addressed other rumors regarding Nintendo. It's been long rumored Nintendo will release an updated version of the Wii with support for high-definition visuals.

Last night, GameTrailers TV was at Nintendo of America's headquarters to check out their upcoming releases for the holiday season, check up on some other releases we've heard little about since E3, and chat for a bit with NoA President Reggie Fils-Aime and EAD General Manager Shigeru Miyamoto.

You can check all that out, along with the accompanying footage, here:

Can New Super Mario Bros. Wii Outsell Modern Warfare 2?

Nintendo President Reggie Fils-Aime said on GameTrailers TV that he thinks the upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii can outsell the massively anticipated Modern Warfare 2 under certain circumstances. He said this while also giving respect to the competing game.

In an interview with GTTV host Geoff Keighly, Fils-Aime said that he thinks New Super Mario Bros. Wii can outsell a single SKU of Modern Warfare 2 by the end of January 2010. "On a single platform...absolutely," said Fils-Aime. "I say that unequivocally."

"You've got to give me the entire holiday selling season," said Fils-Aime. "Let's take it all the way through the January NPD data." This is probably taking into account the nature of the sales of Nintendo's successful first party games.

"It's going to be close," said Fils-Aime, admitting his own anticipation for the game. "Of course I'll play it...I play all the content out there."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Reggie Fils-Aime, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Modern Warfare 2, Nintendo

Nintendo Reports Declining Profits

A just-released Nintendo financial statement reveals that the company's profits fell more than 50% for the last six months. Nintendo reported a profit of 69.5 billion yen ($767.8 million) for the six-months that ended September 30, compared with 144.83 billion yen for the same period last year. That's gotta hurt .
Sales were down as well, falling 34 percent in the same period. Nintendo said it sold 5.75 million consoles during the first half of its fiscal 2009, down from the 10 million units that consumers purchased for the same period last year.
The reasons for the drop in profits are many: Nintendo blames weak sales of the Wii, as well as a lower profit margin caused by the recent Wii price cut, and those ever-bedeviling fluctuations in world currency. Another possible reason: A dip in Nintendo DS sales caused, presumably, by the everyone-has-to-have iPhone , and Apple's positioning of the device as a game console as well as a telephone and GPS system.
