The overall Rock Band music game platform now features over 1,000 songs from 390 artists available across disc-based and downloadable sources, say publisher MTV Games and developer Harmonix. Those tracks, both free and paid, have been downloaded some 60 million times by Rock Band players, making for an impressive average per-track download count of 60,000.

The Emperor's New Groove Box.

Lego Rock Band does not come bundled with peripherals ; the makers assume the target audience already has a previous Rock Band title (or compatible Guitar Hero title), including a guitar or two, a microphone, and a drum set. Using a similar assumption, this review will not go into the basic mechanics of gameplay, for Lego Rock Band is like any Rock Band : play the notes or sing the words on time.

[image1]Where Lego Rock Band differs, however, and whether these differences seem worthwhile is the question. While it offers several new features, its most outstanding may be that it offers fewer features. But you get the same feeling playing Lego Rock Band that you get when you watch Die Hard on TBS. In its attempt to be accessible to a wider audience, it has been unnecessarily edited. Sometimes the edits make you chuckle, but sometimes they just make you long for the real thing.

So what does Lego Rock Band have going for it? One track missed out on last Friday's Rock Band DLC announcements , and depending on your affinity for John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana), it could be a pretty big deal. The three musicians have teamed up to form Them Crooked Vultures, and they're celebrating the release of their debut album this Tuesday by offering up their first single, "New Fang," in both Rock Band and Lego Rock Band .

Fans will be able to download "New Fang" from the Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow, November 17. Those of us who play Rock Band on the Wii will have access to the single on Tuesday, November 24, while PlayStation 3 owners apparently have to wait until December 3. The song is set for the usual $1.99 (160 Microsoft points; 200 Wii Points) price point.

Want a sneak peek of Them Crooked Vultures' first album before you decide to pick up the DLC?
REVIEW: LEGO Rock Band Shows that there is Nothing LEGO Won't Try to Take Over

What the Game's About
LEGO Rock Band can be best described as Rock Band done totally in LEGOs. It might sound obvious, but the very core of the game is Rock Band wrapped in a LEGO package. It goes so far that even the colored note charts are LEGO blocks. The songs are more on the Top 40/Pop side of the music spectrum to make this a more kid-friendly version of the Rock Band family.

What's Hot
The LEGO style is applied extremely well to Rock Band. It's the little things that make the difference, from the LEGO style to the expressive animations that bring the blocky friends to life. LEGO pieces are used as replacements for the traditional Rock Band style. For instance, skulls and other rock n' roll symbols are replaced with their smiling LEGO counter parts. "Cute" is a word that only begins to describe the rock journey of LEGO Rock Band. The songs packed in and the presentation never stray far from the LEGO concept that has swept the Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Batman franchises. There are some ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, LEGO Rock Band, Rock Band

Yes, it looks like everyone's favorite hate-to-love guilty pleasure band that has turned the music in Sonic games into 80's hair metal throwbacks may soon find their songs hitting the Rock Band stage.

So I put the question to the readers - which songs would you like to hear? "Open Your Heart?" "Live and Learn?" Or maybe the quintessential "Knight of the Wind?"

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Rock Band, Sonic

Problem only appears to affect Europe. Owners of The Beatles: Rock Band for PS3 are complaining they're unable to play the game online since downloading extra content. According to a thread on the Rock Band forum, the problem only affects gamers in Europe. It appears to be connected to the release of the Abbey Road DLC and has been going on since the end of last month. A Harmonix staff member responded to the thread, writing, "I'm checking in constantly with the team investigating this issue to try to find out what's going on... Collecting as much information and researching the potential causes will lead to an expedient fix and hopefully prevent an issue like this from occurring in the future." Read more... > >

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PS3, The Beatles: Rock Band, Rock Band, Harmonix

LEGO Rock Band

The rhythm game genre is reaching a saturation point and LEGO Rock Band is yet another example of publishers actively looking at new ways to try and keep things fresh and interesting for the established fan base. Unfortunately, while the LEGO brand has been enough to help other licenses like Star Wars and Batman find new life, it just doesn't do enough to elevate Rock Band to new heights.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, LEGO Rock Band, Star Wars, Batman, Rock Band

Dhani Harrison: Rock Band 3 will Teach You to Play Music

Dhani Harrison, son of the Beatles' late George Harrison, works as a consultant for Harmonix on the Rock Band series. He worked on the original Rock Band, and naturally helped produce The Beatles: Rock Band.

"I guess I'm accidentally responsible for 'Rock Band' becoming the Beatles digital platform, but it was a no-brainer," he told the Chicago Tribune. "It's really difficult to get the Beatles to agree on anything, but I set up demos for them, and [music executive and Beatles friend] Neil Aspinall instantly saw the potential."

Now Harrison is working on the inevitable Rock Band sequel. "I'm working on 'Rock Band 3' and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game," he said. "Give me a couple years, it's going to happen."

Rock Band 3 as both a party game and an educational tool? Sounds a little too convenient... Like Baconnaise. For the uninitiated, that's bacon flavored mayonnaise, and yes, it really exists.

So would you want your ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Rock Band, Will Wright, Music, Harmonix, The Beatles: Rock Band

One of the chief complaints about Guitar Hero and Rock Band is that people ought to just learn how to play the real thing. Well, that may actually happen with Rock Band 3.

Having previously helped get The Beatles Rock Band off the ground, Dhani Harrison has reportedly stayed on to consult on Rock Band 3. The son of Beatle George Harrison told the Chicago Tribune that he wants to make the controllers "more real" for the next game (via Plastic Axe ).

White Stripes Joining Rock Band

Rockers and/or rollers get ready: The White Stripes are headed to Rock Band and Rock Band 2 next week.
The duo, known for primitive drum lines, fuzzed out blues riffs and its lack of a bass player, is dropping the following tracks on listeners/gamers:

Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground
Girl, You Have No Faith in Medicine
     Icky Thump

For (slightly) more traditional music, there's also The Damned (goth-punks from before you were born) bringing their song "Smash It Up (Part II)" to the games and Kasabian is offering "Club Foot" as well. The tracks will be available on the Xbox 360 and Wii on November 10 and the PlayStation 3 on November 12.
I'm going to download The White Stripes' tracks because I'm curious how Rock Band can possibly make them fun. While Jack White is an interesting guitarist and a great songwriter, Meg White's drumming is among the simplest ever recorded, and there is no bass... so how's it all going to ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Rock Band

Rock Band 3 Will Teach People To Play Music For Real

In recent interviews, Dhani Harrison, son of Beatle George Harrison, has not only revealed the existence of Rock Band 3 , he's also dropped a tantalizing detail about the gameplay. According to Harrison, Rock Band 3 will teach gamers how to play music "for real" as they go.
“I’m working on Rock Band 3 and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game,” Harrison said. “Give me a couple years, it’s going to happen.”
Any stories about music games that originate from rock-personas have to be taken with skepticism -- musicians have often dropped wrong information about the video games they're working on because they're way too busy making music and/or pulling groupies to worry about the finer points of video games -- but Harrison is different. By all accounts, he was a major figure behind the scenes of The Beatles: Rock Band , and seems to know his stuff. So ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Rock Band, Will Wright, Music

Spend $20 at Old Navy, Get LEGO Rock Band Free

Black Friday is fast approaching and the first stampede-inducing details are surfacing. Old Navy is really taking it to the next level this holiday season by bundling clothes with videogames.

As part of their Gobblepalooza Black Friday sales event, if you spend $20 on clothes, you'll get a free copy of LEGO Rock Band, which was released on Nov 2. No word on whether you'll just be getting a voucher or if there will actually be stacks of LEGO Rock Band sitting in each store, but the fine print reads "while supplies last" and "your preferred platform may not be available."

Alternatively, if you buy Rock Band 2 you'll get a free Rock Band guitar, though the ad states "supplies are very limited."

Wait, when did Old Navy start selling videogames? Oh the places retailers will go in a recession.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, LEGO Rock Band, Rock Band 2, Rock Band

Review Of New Weezer Album Accuses Band Of Catering To Rock Band

Weezer remains my favorite band...ever. It'd take something very special to top Blue Album and Pinkerton in my mind, especially when you add nostalgia to the mix. But I'm a little more realistic about modern day Weezer, especially the band's latest record, Raditude (don't get me started on the title). The notoriously snarky Pitchfork , however, takes singer and songwriter Rivers Cuomo to task in its review of Raditude , acccusing Cuomo of writing songs specifically for Rock Band .
"Of course, these journal scrawls are backed largely by power-pop -- what else could it be?" wrote critic Rob Mitchum in his largel negative review. "Cuomo proved for all time with the first two Weezer records (and fleetingly since) that he's a master of the genre, popping out melodic sing-alongs and fuzz-guitar riffs, and Raditude largely goes back to those basics. ... All together, it sounds like the first record ever written with the goal expressly in mind of being kick-ass to play on ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Rock Band

Xbox 360 | Rock Band franchise unprofitable in Q3

Despite "strong" start of Beatles, Viacom CEO says MTV Games and Harmonix's rhythm game series negatively impacted margins during July-Sept. period.
Reporting on its third-quarter earnings yesterday, Viacom called out MTV Games and Harmonix's Rock Band franchise as a key revenue driver during the July-September period. As noted yesterday, The Beatles: Rock Band enjoyed a "strong" start and helped offset shrinking revenue from other segments of Viacom's Media Networks division, to which the BET, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon channels, as well as other properties, belong.

"Now give me money (that's what I want)"

However, despite bolstering sales, the Rock Band franchise continued to weigh on the media conglomerate's bottom line. Speaking to investors and analysts following the earnings report, Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman said that the Rock Band franchise did not turn a profit during the period.

The Beatles: Rock Band Not Helping Viacom Profits

The Beatles: Rock Band might be besting Activision’s Guitar Hero 5 in the sales department, but the interactive love letter to the Fab Four has yet to be profitable for MTV Games’ parent company, Viacom, the GamesIndustry.biz reports.

During a conference call, Viacom chief financial officer, Tom Dooley, said, " Rock Band was a negative contributor to margins in the third quarter. We expect it to break even or be slightly profitable in the fourth quarter from a margin point of view. It really depends on how many units we sell in the holiday season."

Most rhythm-based music games are typically profit sucks for publishers because of the cost of manufacturing the instruments and accessories. In the case of The Beatles: Rock Band , those costs were heaped on top of the cash that was dished out to license the coveted tracks, a feat that the game's closing credits proves must have been nothing short of an absolute nightmare. Still, Viacom chief ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, The Beatles: Rock Band, Rock Band

Rock Band Drags On Viacom Margins, Beatles May Only Break Even At Holiday?

Rock Band is losing money, and the profitability challenge confronting the high-cost Beatles iteration is steep, says MTV parent Viacom. In its most recent fiscal quarter, the company saw sales reach $463 million, an increase of about $62 million year-over-year thanks primarily to its cost conservativism and its Paramount Pictures division, although overall profits were down 3 percent to $3.3 billion. However, company CFO Tom Dooley said the company's video games were no help: "Rock ...

Study: Rock Band, Guitar Hero Players Demonstrate Strong Music Genre Loyalty

Players of games in the Rock Band and Guitar Hero franchise demonstrate strong music game loyalty -- but contrary to what some might expect, they seem nearly as loyal to the genre overall as they do to just one franchise or the other, according to a new DFC Intelligence report. During the month of September, DFC tracked 10,000 users of the Xbox 360 versions of Neversoft's Guitar Hero 5 and Harmonix's The Beatles: Rock Band, ...

Music DLC Round-Up -- Week Of Oct. 26

It's time once again for our weekly round-up of downloadable content for all of your favorite music games. Considering there will be at least a dozen or so people hosting Halloween parties this weekend, it’s no surprise that this week sees the release of a few dark metal tracks for Guitar Hero and Rock Band . Gwar, Marilyn Manson and The Misfits hit Guitar Hero 5 in the “All Hallows Eve Track Pack,” while Rock Band fans can terrify the children with a Rob Zombie track pack, and then calm things down a bit with a track pack from Wolfmother. SingStar players are treated to a number of songs this week from the likes of Everclear, Nick Cave and the Stone Roses, as well as a track pack from Duran Duran. I have a feeling that music games will be getting their share of use this weekend, so go forth and rock (and/or treat).
