Rock Band Offering DLC from Nirvana, Night Ranger Next Week

More Nirvana DLC is lined up for Rock Band next week, including the long-awaited "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Also scheduled for Rock Band's post-Thanksgiving DLC update are three tracks from '80s superstars Night Ranger. Each track will go for the standard $1.99 (160 Microsoft points; 200 Wii Points) a pop, with both of the three-packs set for a discounted $5.49 (440 Microsoft points) each. One track missed out on last Friday's Rock Band DLC announcements , and depending on your affinity for John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana), it could be a pretty big deal. The three musicians have teamed up to form Them Crooked Vultures, and they're celebrating the release of their debut album this Tuesday by offering up their first single, "New Fang," in both Rock Band and Lego Rock Band . Fans will be able to download "New Fang" from the Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow, November 17. Those of us who play Rock Band on the Wii will have access to the single on Tuesday, November 24, while PlayStation 3 owners apparently have to wait until December 3. Five tracks from AFI are coming to the Rock Band music store next week, in addition to the Bangles' 1986 hit "Walk Like an Egyptian." Each song will be available for $2 (160 Microsoft points; 200 Wii Points), with the AFI five-pack going for a slightly discounted $8.49 (680 Microsoft points) on the Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Store. Problem only appears to affect Europe. Owners of The Beatles: Rock Band for PS3 are complaining they're unable to play the game online since downloading extra content. According to a thread on the Rock Band forum, the problem only affects gamers in Europe. It appears to be connected to the release of the Abbey Road DLC and has been going on since the end of last month. A Harmonix staff member responded to the thread, writing, "I'm checking in constantly with the team investigating this issue to try to find out what's going on... Dhani Harrison, son of the Beatles' late George Harrison, works as a consultant for Harmonix on the Rock Band series. He worked on the original Rock Band, and naturally helped produce The Beatles: Rock Band. "I guess I'm accidentally responsible for 'Rock Band' becoming the Beatles digital platform, but it was a no-brainer," he told the Chicago Tribune. "It's really difficult to get the Beatles to agree on anything, but I set up demos for them, and [music executive and Beatles friend] Neil Aspinall instantly saw the potential." Rockers and/or rollers get ready: The White Stripes are headed to Rock Band and Rock Band 2 next week. The White Stripes Headline Rock Band DLC for Next Week

Five new tracks are lined up for next week's Rock Band DLC. The White Stripes will make their Rock Band debut with a three-pack of songs, along with a pair of singles from Kasabian and The Damned. Each track will go for $1.99 (160 Microsoft points; 200 Wii Points) individually, with the full White Stripes bundle priced at $5.49 (440 Microsoft points). They're currently scheduled to show up on the Xbox 360 and Wii next Tuesday, November 10. PlayStation 3 owners can look for them that Thursday, November 12. Spend $20 at Old Navy, Get LEGO Rock Band Free

Black Friday is fast approaching and the first stampede-inducing details are surfacing. Old Navy is really taking it to the next level this holiday season by bundling clothes with videogames. As part of their Gobblepalooza Black Friday sales event, if you spend $20 on clothes, you'll get a free copy of LEGO Rock Band, which was released on Nov 2. No word on whether you'll just be getting a voucher or if there will actually be stacks of LEGO Rock Band sitting in each store, but the fine print reads "while supplies last" and "your preferred platform may not be available." Alternatively, if you buy Rock Band 2 you'll get a free Rock Band guitar, though the ad states "supplies are very limited." Wait, when did Old Navy start selling videogames? Oh the places retailers will go in a recession.

Review Of New Weezer Album Accuses Band Of Catering To Rock Band

Weezer remains my favorite band...ever. It'd take something very special to top Blue Album and Pinkerton in my mind, especially when you add nostalgia to the mix. But I'm a little more realistic about modern day Weezer, especially the band's latest record, Raditude (don't get me started on the title). The notoriously snarky Pitchfork , however, takes singer and songwriter Rivers Cuomo to task in its review of Raditude , acccusing Cuomo of writing songs specifically for Rock Band . "Of course, these journal scrawls are backed largely by power-pop -- what else could it be?" wrote critic Rob Mitchum in his largel negative review. "Cuomo proved for all time with the first two Weezer records (and fleetingly since) that he's a master of the genre, popping out melodic sing-alongs and fuzz-guitar riffs, and Raditude largely goes back to those basics. ... Reporting on its third-quarter earnings yesterday, Viacom called out MTV Games and Harmonix's Rock Band franchise as a key revenue driver during the July-September period. As noted yesterday, The Beatles: Rock Band enjoyed a "strong" start and helped offset shrinking revenue from other segments of Viacom's Media Networks division, to which the BET, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon channels, as well as other properties, belong. The Beatles: Rock Band Not Helping Viacom Profits

The Beatles: Rock Band might be besting Activision’s Guitar Hero 5 in the sales department, but the interactive love letter to the Fab Four has yet to be profitable for MTV Games’ parent company, Viacom, the GamesIndustry.biz reports. During a conference call, Viacom chief financial officer, Tom Dooley, said, " Rock Band was a negative contributor to margins in the third quarter. We expect it to break even or be slightly profitable in the fourth quarter from a margin point of view. It really depends on how many units we sell in the holiday season." Most rhythm-based music games are typically profit sucks for publishers because of the cost of manufacturing the instruments and accessories. Brothers-in- Grohl Nirvana and the Foo Fighters both have a number of songs coming to Rock Band next week, along with a single track from Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Music DLC Round-Up -- Week Of Oct. 26

It's time once again for our weekly round-up of downloadable content for all of your favorite music games. Considering there will be at least a dozen or so people hosting Halloween parties this weekend, it’s no surprise that this week sees the release of a few dark metal tracks for Guitar Hero and Rock Band . Gwar, Marilyn Manson and The Misfits hit Guitar Hero 5 in the “All Hallows Eve Track Pack,” while Rock Band fans can terrify the children with a Rob Zombie track pack, and then calm things down a bit with a track pack from Wolfmother. SingStar players are treated to a number of songs this week from the likes of Everclear, Nick Cave and the Stone Roses, as well as a track pack from Duran Duran.
