Following up their teaser announcement on Famitsu.com last week, Square Enix released the first official details today on Estpolis: The Lands Cursed by the Gods , a brand-new Nintendo DS installment in the role-playing series known as Lufia in America. The game's due out February 25 in Japan for 5980 yen; no US date has been announced.

The new Estpolis is being developed by Lufia creator Neverland Company, with much of the staff of Lufia II closely involved with the project. That's no accident, as it turns out: This Estpolis is an action-RPG "rebirth" of Lufia II, which originally hit the Super NES in 1996.

Starring Maxim, a young monster hunter blessed with impressive and mysterious powers, the game features him and his friends on a quest to uncover what lurks behind the Wave Device, an object that grants the user godlike powers. As in Lufia II, the game will feature dungeons that focus heavily on puzzle-solving; ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Square Enix, DS, SNES

Phalanx Coming to WiiWare

That Super NES space shooter with the picture of that old guy with the banjo on its box is coming back on the Wii, but not on Virtual Console. This is starting to represent a trend of old franchises towards WiiWare instead of Virtual Console.

ZOOM Inc, the developers of the original pre-SNES release of Phalanx have announced that they are going to remake the game on WiiWare with tweaks to the design. The game will be based not off of the Super NES version most people remember but the original Sharp X68000 home computer version.

The new game will release in Japan on WiiWare this winter for 500 points – probably less than a Super NES port would have cost on Virtual Console. No word on releases outside of Japan.

Since the Sharp X68000 version of Phalanx, in addition to the Super NES version there was also a Game Boy Advance port made in 2001. Phalanx will join classic action franchises like Contra, Gradius, Excitebike, and eventually Castlevania in releasing new versions on Nintendo's downloadable ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, SNES, Wii, GBA, Contra, Nintendo

Retro updates are all the rage these days, so what's next on the docket. According to the veteran developer Mark Turmell, it may be Smash TV .

In an interview on Retrogaming with Racketboy , the Smash TV programmer discussed the game at length, and also made mention of a potential sequel. Unfortunately, while it appears that the 3D revival actually made it into the programming stages, progress was halted when the situation at Midway deteriorated.

Smash TV was an arcade game originally developed in 1990 that depicted a violent game show. It was eventually ported to a number of systems, including the Sega Genesis and Super NES, and is fondly remembered for its difficulty and catchphrases like, "I'd buy that for a dollar!"

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, The Mark, Genesis, SNES
