News: Sony unleashes PS3 viral The Game

Quizzes! Mini-games! Social! Sony has begun a weird viral campaign based around The Game: a collection of web-based mini-games and quizzes that are supposed to trigger lots of blabber about PS3. Get yourself over to The Game website, enter an email address, pick a name and choose a team - either A or B - to begin. Then plough through quizzes and mini-games (pool simulators, target games, various speed/skill tests) until you feel bold enough to challenge a friend with a compilation of your own devising. This viral attack will last a year and aims to - oh, here we go - represent the four different aspects of the PS3 experience. You can't play on PS3, though, only check Team A's and Team B's standings.
News: Sony rectifying Bloodlines PSN blunder

Download codes for launch-day losers. Sony will compensate anybody who bought a faulty launch version of Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines from the PlayStation Store. "Yes, there was an issue with the original download," a Sony spokesperson told Eurogamer. "It was pulled from the store and we are issuing replacement codes for those people who purchased the content before 12pm GMT on 20th November." Problems arose after Sony speedily replaced the broken file, as the PlayStation Store treated the working copy as a new game and demanded disgruntled owners pay another £24.99.
Interview: Zenimax Asia/Bethesda's Tetsu Takahashi on Bringing Western Games to Japan

Western games have traditionally not sold well in Japan. There have been a number of theories as to why -- for instance, the lack of a PC market in Japan to inform players that Western-style titles are fun, or simply cultural differences. Sony famously puts giant eyebrows on Ratchet in order to sell Ratchet and Clank games in the country. Does it work? The game sells well, but whether it's because of additional eyebrows is ...

For crazy supercomputing research. The US Air Force is fast becoming one of Sony's most loyal customers with plans to purchase 2200 PS3 consoles. That's according to a Government document (spotted by Information Week) stating the consoles will be for use by the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, New York. The lab uses PS3s to carry out supercomputing research and already has 336 of them. Scientists are trying to find out if technology which makes use of the Cell processor could be used for military purposes. They use the consoles for multiple radar image and high-def video processing, plus research into "neuromorphic computing" - building computers which act like real brains. AAAAA. Maybe, or maybe not. In any case, President Obama announced today a new initiative focused on improving education in the fields of science, technology engineering, and match (STEM) dubbed "Educate to Innovate."

The program has partnered up with several notable names in the field of education, from Sesame Street to the Discovery Channel, as well as a website backed by Time-Warner Cable and video game initiatives. President Obama's new initiative to use digital media as a means of education is set to use Little Big Planet as a learning tool, reports GamePolitics. The Digital Learning Initiative is being headed up by the office of the President, with various partnerships with the MacArthur Foundation, HASTAC, and National Lab Day. The $2 million competition consists of two categories: 21st Century Learning Lab Designers and Game Changers. It's the latter one that incorporates Media Molecules adorable platformer.

Game Changers asks players to create Little Big Planet content that includes science, engineering, and math concepts. Sony Computer Entertainment America and the Entertainment Software Association are funding the competition as well, and Sony will be donating 1,000 PlayStation 3 systems with copies of Little Big Planet to low-income libraries and community organizations.
Media: PlayStation 3 - It Only Does Blu-ray Movies

Great PlayStation 3 commercial, of the greatest PlayStation 3 commercial?

We'll leave that for you to decide as you watch the latest in Sony's new, "more aggressive" approach to advertising for the holiday season:

Of the spot, Peter Dille, Senior Vice President, Marketing & PlayStation Network, said "we wanted a spot that would hammer home the Blu-ray movie advantage and speak to this broader audience that may not be as familiar with the PS3's feature set. So we asked Kevin Butler to bestow some wisdom in this exchange with an unhappy teenager who is complaining his grandmother is hogging the PS3 to watch Blu-ray movies."

The spots should begin airing on television this week, and the campaign so far seems to be working for Sony. "I've been receiving a lot of emails from friends and family and hearing from a lot of you who are catching the commercials regularly and laughing even after the third or fourth helping," said Dille. "We couldn't be more pleased by the overwhelming response, not just to ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PS3, The Movies, Sony

Several game industry publishers and organizations, including Microsoft, Sony, and the Entertainment Software Association, have announced educational initiatives as part of President Barack Obama's call for progress in science and math education. The President's "Educate to Innovate" campaign aims to foster a greater nationwide focus on "STEM" (science, technology, engineering, and math) education, partially in response to the United States' lagging childhood and teenage rankings in science and math. "I'm committed to moving our country ...

What the Kombo Staffers are Thankful For

This year may not have a great holiday line-up, but the Kombo staff has found plenty of things this past year to be more than thankful for.

Keri Honea, Copy Editor
Even though I've gone to the dark side and purchased an Xbox 360 in the last year, I am very thankful that Sony has pumped up their PS3 library with goodies such as inFamous, Uncharted 2, and Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time. My poor PS3 has finally had the opportunity this year to be dusted off and loved.

I'm also very, very thankful for Assassin's Creed II. It has taken me back to my favorite spots in Italy that I visited during my __th birthday.

Ryan Olsen, Reviews and Previews Director
I'm thankful for the brilliance that is Borderlands. It is like Gearbox asked me what kind of game I have been wanting my entire life and made it just for me. I've spent countless hours with looting games and FPS games so the combination of the two is gaming nirvana for me. With planned DLC and improvements that the Borderlands community is requesting ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, PS3, Borderlands, Xbox 360, Sony, Ratchet & Clank

News: SWG claims 3m player-made quests

Ageing MMO enlivened by Chronicle Master. Sony Online Entertainment has announced that players have created over three million quests for its Star Wars Galaxies MMO in just over a month. The quests were made using the new Chronicle Master system for content creation. That's a remarkable number, considering that Galaxies' subscriber numbers have recently shrunk to such an extent that SOE had to close nearly half its servers. One individual player is said to have made over 6000 playable quests. Perhaps it's the ability to use iconic Star Wars characters that has players hooked - or the loot that's unique to the Chronicle Master system.
Sony Offers Free Comics for PSP Reader Trial

With the release of the v6.20 firmware update for the PSP earlier this week, Sony added the new Digital Comics Reader to their handheld. Unfortunately, comics won't actually be available for purchase on the PlayStation Store until next month, but in the meanwhile you can try the reader out for yourself by using a free promotional code to download a trial issue today.
You can head over to Sony's Digital Comics website to get the promotional code. Then visit the PlayStation Store on your PSP and enter it, and it'll allow you to download the first issue of the new Transformers: All Hail Megatron comic series (European owners will get the first issue of Aleister Arcane).
The issue will take up about 40MB of space. Enjoy.

PlayStation 3 | PSN to be basis of Sony iTunes rival, accounts top 33 million

PS3 and PSP's online component will form backbone of Sony Online Service, a content-delivery system common to HDTVs, Blu-ray players, PCs, MP3 players, e-readers, and mobile devices.
In addition to confirming 3D gaming for the PlayStation 3 was coming in 2010 , yesterday's Sony Corp. global strategy presentation also revealed that a premium subscription service will be added to the PlayStation Network . Those two initiatives were revealed as part of a far larger vision which will see Sony try and overtake rival Apple's iTunes service with a common content distribution system for all its media products.

Sony aims to bring together all its products via one common online platform.

Temporarily named the Sony Online Service (SOS), the ambitious initiative aims to offer a single user experience across all its network media devices, from portable media players to large-screen Bravia HDTVs. At the presentation, Sony ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Sony, PS3, PSP

Sonic fans might want to keep an eye out for the latest round of Little Big Planet DLC in December. According to Siliconera , Sega and Sony are collaborating on a costume back containing a variety of Sonic characters, including Tails, Knuckles and the blue hedgehog himself.

The costumes will reportedly be available in a pack, or individually. They include Sonic, Sonic the Werehog, Tails, Dr. Eggman and Knuckles costumes.

There's no word on pricing or a release date, except that it will likely be released in mid-December. The only official mention of the pack so far is on PlayStation Asia , but expect more details soon.

A Good (or at Least Fairly Decent) Look at Sony's Magical Wand

Click for a larger view

While Microsoft has been quite open with Project Natal, showing it to anyone who will look and taking it on talk show after talk show following E3, Sony has been much quieter about their unnamed motion control peripheral. In most cases, there isn't even a very good look at it to be found online.

That is, until now. Sony gave those in attendance at their media and investors conference a better look at the revised form of what I'm calling the Wonder Wand. As you can see in the image above, it has at least six buttons placed upon it, including the standard four PS face buttons, a big central button between them, and the home button below.

Plus, as you can plainly see by the text, it features force feedback, a gyroscope not unlike that in the Wii MotionPlus, an accelerometer, and something called "rendition by light," which may involve that bulb on top that looks like it should be sticking out of the mouth of a clown.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Sony, Microsoft, Project Natal, E3, Wii

Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time is the Franchise's Fastest Selling Game

Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, the latest outing for the dynamic duo from Sony and Insomniac Studios, unfortunately did not manage to blast its way into October's Top 10 software sales as rated by NPD. However, that doesn't mean its sales were unsatisfactory.

In the latest edition of their Full Moon Show podcast, the bad boys of Burbank revealed that A Crack in Time is nonetheless the fastest-selling game yet in the Ratchet & Clank franchise. Impressive, notes The Examiner, as the previous entries have sold over 25 million units combined worldwide.

Of course, one thing working against Ratchet & Clank would be their release date of October 27th, which means the October NPD would only have covered four days of its shelf life so far. It should be interesting to see if it can aspire to greater heights once the November rankings are revealed.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Sony

Sony "Confident" It Will Sell 13 Million PlayStation 3's This Year

Sony Computer Entertainment is aiming for 13 million PlayStation 3 consoles sold worldwide by the end of the fiscal year, as Executive Vice President Kaz Hirai explained to the press that he is "confident" that they can reach that goal.

Furthermore, they plan to achieve profitability with the platform by March 2011, with cost-cutting and investing in new technologies helping to pave the way, including their plans to focus on 3D gaming and movies with a firmware update.

Gamasutra notes that if Sony is able to accomplish the 13 million number by the end of their fiscal year in March 2010, it would "represent a significant gain over the company's fiscal 2008, which saw 10.1 million units sold." The company's own numbers show that they sold 4.3 million consoles combined over their first and second quarter, meaning they will have to sell over double that amount during the remaining half, which includes the holiday season.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Sony, PS3, Will Wright

Sony Finally Launches The PlayStation 2...In Brazil

It might be nine years late, but Sony has finally gotten around to releasing the PlayStation 2…in Brazil…for around $465. Not only is that almost five times the cost of a new PS2 here in the United States, but, as Edge Online reports, the games will cost between $55 and $66.
While I couldn’t be happier for all those Brazilian gamers who will now get the chance to experience some of the greatest games ever made for the first time, that price tag will clearly put the console beyond the reach of many potential purchasers. On the plus side, Brazil’s already thriving piracy business is about to have a fantastic holiday season.

God of War Collection Receiving Reports of Freezing Issues

The recently-released God of War Collection appears to be experiencing some technical hiccups, according to users on the PlayStation forums and blog (via Joystiq ). A handful of players are complaining of freezing during the opening cinema or stage. Most of the issues seem to be coming from 60 GB units, though there are a few PS3 Slim owners with complaints as well. Sony hasn't officially responded yet, but we're keeping an eye out for it.

If you've been having trouble, feel free to enter the PlayStation forums and let them know. As with all bug reports, the more information provided, the easier it is for developers to address them. Be sure to include your PS3 model and where the freeze occurred. The problem doesn't seem widespread; many players are enjoying the game just fine, and we haven't had any trouble here at 1UP. But we'll keep you up to date with word from Sony on a fix for those affected. ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, God of War, PS3, Sony, 1up

ModNation Racers Hands-On Preview

Little Big Planet launched the "Play, Create, Share" mantra into gamers' minds last year, and now with ModNation Racers , Sony hopes to mine similar success from a kart racer with similarly robust creation and customization options. Before kicking off the online beta test in December, developer United Front Games opened the doors of its Vancouver studio to let us test out those tools and get a sense of what to expect from ModNation Racers' retail release next spring.

Inspired by the DIY vinyl toy scene (where artists purchase blank figurines and customize them in oft-wondrous ways), ModNation Racers eschews the genre's typical franchise or licensed characters in favor of blank-slate drivers that can be manipulated via an accessible character creation interface. But unlike the real vinyl toys, you won't need markers, brushes, or physical artistic skill to turn the ModNation version into something that represents you and your ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, ModNation Racers, LittleBigPlanet, Sony

IBM Ending Cell Processor Development

IBM has confirmed that it will cease development of the Cell Processor used on the PS3 among other systems. This does not equate to an end of production.

IBM has been co-developing the Cell Processor along with Sony and Toshiba. Even after the PS3's launch better models of the processor have been developed between the three. IBM's most recent and supposedly last version of the Cell Processor is the PoweXCell 8i which is currently used in the world's second fastest supercomputer. IBM will not develop the planned 32 SPE version of Cell.

The status of actual development of the Cell Processor does not equate to the status of production of current models of the processor for the PS3. No reports have been made on changes to production or production of PS3s.

Despite ending development of the Cell itself, IBM will still incorporate parts of the Cell into future designs. Apparently they will pursue a CPU/GPU hybrid route in the future.

Technically, Sony can still hire IBM to develop a new Cell ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Cell, PS3, Sony, PS4

PSP, PS3 Lead Weekly Japanese Sales Charts

PSP | Video Q&A: Sony explains PSP adhocParty

Kristin Neirinckx discusses how PSP owners can use their PS3s to play multiplayer non-infrastructure games over the Web.
