Valve Addresses Left 4 Dead 2 Lag Issues

The Left 4 Dead franchise relies heavily upon its responsive and action-packed gameplay. As such, a seamless online experience is absolutely essential to enjoy all that the game has to offer. As of late, however, there have been a number of reports regarding lag issues with the Xbox version of the game.

According to the game's official blog, Valve is aware of these issues and the necessary improvements have been made. "We have upgraded our network infrastructure to better accommodate the huge response to L4D2. 360 players will now have lag-free servers. We've also added more dedicated servers. We will continue to monitor the situation and add resources as needed."

Let's hope that other development teams learn a thing or two from Valve about continually supporting their customers.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Valve, Left 4 Dead 2, Left 4 Dead, Xbox

Japanese software unit sales slowed for the week ended November 22, as Valve Software's new Left 4 Dead 2 for Xbox 360 broke the top 10 in the region, according to tracking firm Media Create. Left 4 Dead 2, published by Electronic Arts, sold 28,000 units to capture the sixth slot. The game was able to land the top 10 position despite the Xbox 360's relatively slow hardware sales in the region. The top-selling game ...

News: Valve: boycott Steamworks, miss out

MW2 sold an "awful lot", says Holtman. Valve has said that digital distributors who boycott PC games because they ship with Steamworks services are missing out. Business director Jason Holtman was addressing concerns aired by Direct2Drive, Impulse and Gamersgate, all of which decided not to sell Activision's Modern Warfare 2 because integrated Steamworks tools acted as a storefront for Steam. "To our minds, we think that if you're making a good game and it's got the services a customer wants it should get out in as many channels as possible. If you have a good portal and you're good at collecting money from folks, and attracting them, there's no reason why you shouldn't be," Holtman told GamesIndustry.biz.
News: Valve unveils Steam "early holiday sale"

Awesome games for amazingly little. Valve has announced its "early holiday sale" on Steam, where it plans to offer a different set of discount deals every day for the next week. Highlights of the first day include the LucasArts Premier Pack reduced from nearly 90 quid to £34.99, which is enough gaming to last you until next Christmas, let alone this one. There's also the THQ Complete Pack, a similarly extravagant bundle that features Red Faction: Guerrilla, Dawn of War II, Company of Heroes, STALKER and countless others for a frankly bonkers £26.49. That one actually looks like an error, it's so cheap.
Steam Kicks Off Early Holiday Sale

A few days ahead of Black Friday, Steam is having an early holiday sale of its own. Valve has just announced that many of the service's most popular games will be getting steep discounts, including Dragon Age: Origins and Batman: Arkham Asylum .

The current sale features deals on seven titles, with price cuts ranging from 25 percent to 80 percent off. It'll run until Friday at 8 AM PST, at which point a new set of deals will become available. Definitely worth keeping an eye on Steam if you're looking to expand your library on the cheap.

In addition to the games that are currently on sale, Valve will also be offering deeply discounted publisher packs. At the moment, it's possible to pick up either the LucasArts Premier Pack or the THQ Complete Pack for $49.00.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Steam, Valve, Dragon Age: Origins, Batman: Arkham Asylum, LucasArts

Left 4 Dead 2 - PC - GR Review

Twice as undead as before. I guarantee!

If there’s one universal truth about zombies, it’s that there’s never just one . So it was inevitable that Valve would follow up last year’s out-of-nowhere crowd pleaser Left 4 Dead with a sequel. But just like seeing a zombie get back up and scramble for your brain pan after you’ve already shot it repeatedly in the head, fans of the first game weren’t expecting a sequel to pop up this soon.

[image1]There’s a reason class reunions don’t happen on a yearly basis. Not much changes in the course of a year. In Left 4 Dead 2 the core concept remains firmly intact—four survivors winding their way from safe-house to safe-house until they get to a rescue point—and many of the first game’s mechanics and features have only been incrementally retooled and refined.

In Left 4 Dead 2 the core concept remains firmly intact—four survivors winding their way from safe-house to safe-house until they get to a rescue point—and many of the first game’s mechanics and features have only been incrementally retooled and refined.

Over the past year, the zombie hordes have developed surprisingly discerning palettes. Valve is not a company to sit around twiddling their fingers.
Left 4 Dead 2 Review

Like its predecessor, Left 4 Dead 2 is a sort of hyper-violent personality test masquerading as a cooperative zombie survival shooter. If you want to know which of your mates you should trust with the water bottle after shipwrecking on a desert island, simply invite them over for a bout and let the game’s dynamic challenge factor weasel out hidden traits and flaws, profiling each player in sickly green strokes of undead gore.
Where other shooters are static, unreactive structures, brittle sandcastles awaiting the casually lobbed football of human intervention, the Left 4 Dead games give exactly as good as they get, altering the quantity, quality and positioning of enemies, weapon drops and obstacles in response to player behavior. Lone wolves will be pounced upon by terrifying cat-like Hunters, cowardly hangers-on showered in Horde-attracting vomit by repulsive Boomers, layabouts lassoed and dragged off by elusive Smokers. After half an hour’s play, you should have a lot of ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Left 4 Dead 2, Xbox 360, Valve

Valve Releases Left 4 Dead 2 Patch

Valve has announced that they've issued the first patch for Left 4 Dead 2 , fixing a number of bugs ranging from matchmaking issues with getting into Advance and Expert games to performance issues with rendering decals.
The patch will automatically be applied the next time you load up your Steam client. Hopefully, with this bit of housekeeping out of the way, Valve can now get around to releasing the SDK for the game so gamers no longer have to engage in multi-step processes to mod it.
A full list of fixes for this patch can be seen below.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Valve, Left 4 Dead 2, Steam

Stardock Estimates Steam has 70 Percent of Digital Market Share

Valve's Steam service has undeniably emerged as the most well-known digital distribution platform for PC games, but just how much of the digital pie do they consume? Gamasutra reports that according to internal estimates from Stardock, publisher of Sins of a Solar Empire and owner of the Impulse distribution service, Steam takes 70 percent of the market share.
"Our estimation is that Steam -- as the current market leader -- enjoys approximately 70 percent of the overall digital distribution market with Impulse at 10 percent and all others combined at 20 percent in terms of actual dollars generated per month," wrote Stardock chief Brad Wardell in their 2009 customer report. Wardell goes on to estimate that digital distribution will have contributed 25 percent of revenue "for a typical PC game publisher on a new title" in 2009.
One of the problems in making Impulse more competitive with Steam, Wardell explained, is that ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Steam, Stardock, PC, Valve, Sins of a Solar Empire

News: Steam has 70 per cent of PC pie

Digital rival says Valve's streets ahead. Brad Wardell, boss of Stardock and digital distribution platform Impulse, reckons Valve's Steam is miles ahead of any competition in the PC gaming download market. "Our estimation is that Steam - as the current market leader - enjoys approximately 70 per cent of the overall digital distribution market with Impulse at 10 per cent and all others combined at 20 per cent in terms of actual dollars generated per month," wrote Wardell in a company report this week (spotted by Gamasutra). Wardell also feels Valve is beginning to monopolise on its position by integrating Steamworks tools into games at an early development stage and essentially locking them out from other digital distribution platforms. While it's pretty much impossible to give exact sales figures for digital distribution (no-one's willing to fess up to their own figures), publisher and Impulse owner Stardock has estimated Valve's Steam controls a whopping 70 per cent of the market. Among others, we've been able to battle zombies as a high-school football coach and a Vietnam vet in Left 4 Dead . Could the Midnight Riders be next?

Fans will recognize the The Midnight Riders as a fake southern rock band featured throughout Left 4 Dead 2's "Dark Carnival" campaign. Posters promoting the group list an official website, which leads to what appears to be a teaser site registered by Valve.

There's already speculation that the southern rockers will be Left 4 Dead's next group of survivors, possibly starring in a DLC pack. If that turns out to be the case, expect more information early next year.

Valve Secretly Launches Midnight Riders Website -- Left 4 Dead 2 DLC?

We may have our first hint at where Valve is going with the first slate of downloadable content for Left 4 Dead 2 . Fans have discovered a website for the motorcycle-riding metal band Midnight Riders , which, according to official records , was registered by Valve on September 10 and teases "coming soon."
Left 4 Dead 2 players might remember the Midnight Riders from the end of the creepy Dark Carnival campaign. Survivors are tasked with turning on the Midnight Riders' stage as they try to escape.
The prospect of smacking down zombies with a biker gain...oh my.

Fan Creates NES-Styled Left 4 Dead "De-Make"

In the face of successful oldschool titles and remakes such as Mega Man 9 and Konami's ReBirth series, the developers at Valve have decided to beat these old industry hands at their own game-- by taking their hit franchise Left 4 Dead into the field of 8-bit gaming!

Two players! Up to eight zombies on a map at a time! It's zombie-fighting fun like you've never seen it before, only it's the same as it ever was!

Okay, in actuality, this is a fan-made game by "PixelForce" which is supposed to be available for the PC come January 4th. They plan for the game to have all five maps of all four campaigns included, and you can find out more by checking out the YouTube description.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Left 4 Dead, Mega Man 9, Konami, Valve, PC

Valve: Devs Should Experiment With Post-Release Content Using Digital Distribution

Digital distribution and the "games as a service" model opens up freedom in pricing, but it also gives developers opportunities to connect with their audiences and take risks in ways that were never previously possible, says Valve's business development director Jason Holtman -- the traditional methods of post-release support are merely one option. "Everybody knows that the entertainment industry is fundamentally changing these days, and it's changing because everyone is connecting, and they're becoming connected ...

News: Valve teasing L4D2's Midnight Riders

DLC? Plus: Jimmy Gibbs Jr. zombie. Valve has set up a website dedicated to the Midnight Riders, the rock band whose light show saves the day in Left 4 Dead 2's Dark Carnival campaign. The teaser site (thanks Destructoid) consists of a splash image of the band and the words "Coming soon". Whatever could it mean? Meanwhile, an enterprising young so-and-so on the Valve forums has uncovered a Jimmy Gibbs Jr. zombie hidden in the L4D2 game files - Gibbs Jr. being central to the opening campaign, Dead Center - and found a way to reintegrate him. There's even some dialogue for the survivors.
News: Valve: Raise price and digi games still sell

Dev discusses price variation on Steam. Publishers and developer are free to drop and raise the price of digitally released games without any penalty to future sales or consumer loyalty, according to Valve's head of Steam, Jason Holtman, as reported on GamesIndustry.biz. Speaking at the Montreal International Game Summit this week, Holtman said the digital market flips traditional retail thinking on its head, and that a game discounted for a short time can still go back to full price and increase sales after the promotion. "In a connected world with a connected game it's very different and it bucks some of the traditional trends on the way people think about pricing," said Holtman.
What Do You Think Of Left 4 Dead 2?

Steam opened the floodgates last night. You probably snuck over to Best Buy to pick up a retail copy on your lunch break. Have you had a chance to pop into Valve's zombie sequel yet? I reviewed the game for G4 (and, as you might expected, loved it), which means I've already dumped many more hours into Left 4 Dead 2 than you have! Take that, Internet. But you'll all surpass me soon enough.
If you've been able to give it a spin, what do you think so far?

Adam Sessler And Patrick Klepek Discuss Left 4 Dead 2

Valve's decision to move forward on a sequel to Left 4 Dead 2 so quickly surprised just about everybody, but there's a reason people are so trustworthy of Valve: they're usually right. Patrick Klepek sat down with Adam Sessler this week to discuss Patrick's review of Left 4 Dead 2 , which he scored an impressive 4 out of 5. The game's a little uneven in spots, but there's plenty to like about Left 4 Dead 2 .

Zombie Fan Slowly Rebuilding Left 4 Dead As Old School 8-Bit Pixel Shooter

Valve inspires its fans to do crazy things. Take Eric Ruth, who's made it his personal mission to recreate Left 4 Dead from scratch in the context of a top-down, 8-bit action game. So far, Ruth has finished the first campaign of the original Left 4 Dead , the hospital-based No Mercy, but he's aiming to release a completed product, spanning all four campaigns and including all of the special infected, around January 4. He's pretty much building the whole project by himself.
"Valve doesn't know about it yet," wrote Ruth on his YouTube page , "but I'm sure (with their love of community creations) that they will find this mildly amusing at worst, and hilarious at best."
The world would be better with more 8-bit recreations of modern games.
To watch a video of Ruth's progress so far, head to YouTube .

If there's one thing the videogames industry is good at, it's figuring out a way for any normal thing a gamer does in their life to include videogames. Case in point: Valve's brand new holiday greeting cards, featuring amazing Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 themes ( via Destructoid).
Seriously, who wouldn't want a holiday greeting card of a TF2 sniper disguised as an adorable snowman? There are four different collections to choose from on Valve's store : One for Left 4 Dead, one for Left 4 Dead 2 , and two collections for Team Fortress 2. Each were drawn by artist Alexandria Neonakis, and come with 10 different 5"x7" cards for $15.95.
A few more pictures of the various collections follow:
