Article: Save your Scorn

Do those predicting or celebrating the Wii's decline have a point? Published as part of our sister-site GamesIndustry.biz' widely-read weekly newsletter, the GamesIndustry.biz Editorial is a weekly dissection of one of the issues weighing on the minds of the people at the top of the games business. It appears on Eurogamer after it goes out to GI.biz newsletter subscribers. Only a few years ago, Microsoft was the company that couldn't do anything right in the games market. The original Xbox was widely ridiculed - it was the size of a house, its controllers were designed for gorillas rather than humans - and the company's quarterly reports, each revealing the scale of the gaping money pit in the Home & Entertainment division, were a steady dripfeed of further fodder for the fire. Soon, though, it was Sony's turn to occupy the stocks in the middle of the village. Around the launch of the PS3, the formerly dominant hardware firm couldn't do anything right - and the slightest misstep was ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Wii, Microsoft, Xbox, Sony, PS3

The Man With An Xbox Live Gamerscore Of 384,155 Points (And Counting)

Sometime in 2015, 26-year-old Xbox Live user Stallion83 , otherwise known as Robert, expects he'll achieve the goal he set out for in 2006: earning an Xbox Live gamerscore of 1,000,000.
According to achievement tracking website TrueAchievements , it's currently possible to unlock 733,835 achievement points across every Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade game. Microsoft was unable to verify this statistic or provide their own achievement numbers for me. It sounds about right.
Robert, who declined to reveal his last name to me due to legitimate fears of someone hacking his account, has currently accumulated a monstrous gamerscore totaling 384,155 points.
(Note: It's very likely that number will change by the time you read this story.)

According to TrueAchievements, Robert has the most achievements point of anyone on Xbox Live. He's closely followed by Zakke Wylde with 351,090 points. Robert says that's been true for years. Robert told me Microsoft has never contacted him about ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Xbox

Sorry Kids: Xbox Live Twitter, Facebook, Last.Fm To Remain Adults Only... For Now

This posts is strictly for teens, and by "teens" I mean people between the ages of 13 and 17 who are Xbox Live Gold members, so if this isn't you, please stop reading immediatly...
Seriously, stop reading this post. Go read The Wall Street Journal or something, old man.
Are they gone? Good. Now that it's just us kids, I'm gonna "rap" at you in a language that you'll totally grok, and lay down a real bummer trip: According to Microsoft's Major Nelson, the Xbox Live versions of Twitter, Facebook and Last.fm that are coming to Gold members won't be usable by anyone under the age of 18. That, my homies, is wickety, wickety wack. Denied... TO THE EXTREME!
Major Nelson says: "We made this decision because as it stands now, parents aren’t able to use Family Settings to customize which of these applications their children can access."
Dude, that's a total downer. But don't become a cutter or light up a crack-pipe: There's hope.
News: Marvel UA2 demo on Xbox Live

Thor you might like a try. Activision has released a Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 demo on Xbox Live. The full game's out but not brilliant, which you'll know if you read our MUA2 review. Perfect demo fodder, then, and not too large at 706MB. Unfortunately there's no accurate description of what the sampler offers. An enormously inaccurate description would be something like "you fight some cats using bleach". Er, expect an early level and small portion of the superhero roster to beat up the baddies with.
Sessler's Soapbox: Adam Calls Infinity Ward Out

Lately, Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 has made itself into a small hotbed of controversy the likes of which might make even Take Two a little jealous. First was one particular mission, which turned out to be optional, and then there was the infamous "Fight Against Grenade Spamming" video.

It is the latter point with which G4's Adam Sessler has taken issue with in his latest edition of Sessler's Soapbox:

Video Game - E3 2009 - Sessler's Soapbox

While Sessler is hopeful that this might raise awareness or make people think, I'm not sure I have that same faith. I'm sure there will at least be one person who might reconsider what they're saying as a result of this, but... yeah.

I do wish Infinity Ward had put a little more thought into that punchline for their video and the repercussions it might have, rather than essentially stepping up as an enabler to all of the hate-term-dropping 13-year olds on Xbox LIVE and the PlayStation Network.

Sure, they've pretty much said "whoops" and apologized, ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Infinity Ward, Modern Warfare 2, E3, Xbox

Modern Warfare 2 Avatar Clothes Coming To Xbox Live

Check out the picture above: It's the full ghost outfit from the new Modern Warfare 2 avatar clothes coming to Xbox Live. In fact, they should be available for download today, friends -- but you'll have to buy them.
Don't feel left out, PlayStation 3 owners: You'll get some Modern Warfare 2 themes for your system.
As for the price: I don't know yet. According to Infinity Ward's official twitter, run by Creative Strategist Robert Bowling, " I asked for some to be free but was denied." I wonder who Bowling asked?
My question to you: What would you pay to outfit your little computer self with the armor you see above?

News: MS warns against second-hand 360s

May have been previously banned. Senior Xbox cheerleader Larry Hryb has warned gamers buying second-hand 360s that they run the risk of not being able to connect to Xbox Live. It's all down to the fact that Microsoft has been "actively banning consoles from Xbox Live that have been modified to play pirated games". "Our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox Live community remains a top priority," Hryb wrote on his blog. Well, someone wrote on his blog. It's a very 'vetted' statement.
Details of Xbox LIVE Rewards Program(s) Revealed

Microsoft has recently been recruiting people through e-mail to participate in a new rewards program for Xbox 360 gamers, and today, the first details of the experiment have been uncovered.

The rewards program is currently being tested with three tiers as players are invited to join groups designated as Gray, Green, or Orange, with the prizes being Microsoft Points. GameSpy points out that "the vague language used in the program description seems to allude to Microsoft placing restrictions on what you can buy with your points: '...every month, The Rewards Squad will send you an email with an update on the points you've earned and the cool stuff you can get.'"

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Microsoft, Xbox, Xbox 360

Braid Coming to PlayStation Network Next Week

At long last, the critically-acclaimed puzzle platformer Braid is finally coming to the PlayStation Network next week. The game is due out November 12 for $14.99, matching the Xbox Live Marketplace price from over a year ago. The press release also mentions a European date to be announced soon, so if you're one of our PS3-owners across the pond, you don't have much longer to wait either.

For the uninitiated, Braid is a puzzle game that relies on time manipulation mechanics, dressed in the trappings of a traditional platformer. Creator Jonathan Blow was vaulted into the indie spotlight for its clever brain-benders and unconventional storytelling. If you're a PS3 owner who has been waiting to see what all the fuss was about, next week is your chance.

Left 4 Dead 2 Demo Now Available To Everyone -- What Do You Think So Far?

Who doesn't love shooting zombies? If not, stop reading this article; it doesn't concern you. The playable demo for Valve Software's Left 4 Dead 2 has arrived on Xbox Live (and on Steam later today) for all interested gamers. Previously, the demo had been restricted to gamers who had pre-ordered, but that's no longer the case. Given the amount of skepticism leveled at Left 4 Dead 2 , the demo is an important moment for Valve. If you've had a chance to download it, tell me what you think.
Oh, also: braaaaaaains. Naturally.

Xbox Live Rewards Pilot Program Begins

Remember the mysterious Xbox Live rewards program that select subscribers were emailed about last month? It apparently kicked off as of yesterday -- for those who were chosen for the pilot program, that is.

Joystiq noticed this morning that Microsoft's official rewards website has gone live , and it has all the details on the program, what incentives are available, and the kind of activity subscribers are being rewarded for. Essentially, a small number of Microsoft points will be added to a user's account whenever they renew their Live subscription, subscribe to Netflix, purchase items on the Marketplace, or take the occasional survey.

Save for the surveys, most of those seem like the kind of things Live users were probably already planning on doing. The trial run of this program is going from now until April 30 of next year, so we'll see how much that all changes before it becomes available to everyone.

News: COD4 map pack price cut on Xbox Live

50 per cent off Variety bundle. Activision or Microsoft or whoever controls these things has reduced the price of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's Variety Map Pack on Xbox Live. Presumably this is an attempt to shift a few more copies of the pack before the release of MW2 next week, and sees the price cut from 800 to 400 Microsoft Points (or £3.40 / €4.80 for boring people). You can queue it up on the web if you're into that sort of thing.

Retail quiz points to extensive support. BioWare is planning to support Mass Effect 2 with oodles of downloadable content, according to a report. Destructoid has got its hands on something called a "Microsoft Expert Zone quiz", a tool that briefs retailers about information on the games they sell, and it lists some interesting Xbox Live features for the upcoming sci-fi RPG. There's "planned episodic combat via DLC", new downloadable characters, weapons and armour, and "full campaign expansions" on the cards, apparently, along with "periodic updates" via something called the "Cerberus Network".
Xbox | Prince of Persia movie trailer unspools as sequel rumors fly

First look at big-screen adaptation of fantasy series shows massive special effects shots, sumptuous sets; Ubisoft declines to comment on speculation new game will be unveiled next spring.
Gamers worried that Disney would skimp on the big-screen version of
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time can relax a bit. Today, the first trailer for the fantasy adventure hit YouTube, clocking in at around nearly two and a half minutes. The same trailer was shown at several press events last week, six months after the first footage of the film surfaced .

Though of low quality (a higher-resolution is due out later this week), the clip clearly shows that producer Jerry Bruckheimer is making good on his promise to give Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time the same sort of opulent treatment as the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. The film's estimated $150 million budget is on full display, with dozens of effects shots and lavish set pieces, many of which were shot on location in Morocco.

Point Purchasing Pooch Becomes First Officially Recognized Canine Member of Xbox LIVE

Remember last week, when we brought you the saga of Kotaku reader Greg, whose dog Oscar somehow managed to purchase 5,000 Xbox LIVE points for his owner while chewing on the console's controller?

Well, today brought about an official response from Microsoft on the matter. "People spend tens of billions of dollars on their pets every year," they note, "but it's pretty unusual for your pet to return the favor (except in love and tail wagging of course)."

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Xbox, Microsoft

Microsoft Banning Xbox 360 Modders

It seems that quite a number of Xbox 360 users over the past week or so have been booting up their console only to find that their Xbox Live accounts have been ban-hammered by Microsoft. Turns out the house that Gates built has finally decided to take its boot to piracy’s neck in the form of mass bannings. As a spokesperson explained to IGN :
"We have taken action against a small percentage of consoles that have been modified to play pirated game discs. In line with our commitment to combat piracy and support safer and more secure gameplay for the more than 20 million members of our Xbox Live community, we are suspending these modded consoles from Xbox Live."
So if you’re enjoying your illegal games on your modded 360, play on at your peril I guess. And if you are among those modders who have had their Xbox Live accounts banned, I’m sure you’ve learned your lesson and will never mod a console or steal a game ever again. Mission accomplished.

Three Episodes of Wallace & Gromit Releasing on XBLA Wednesday

They might not be following the episodic release structure that the PC versions are, but episodes two , three , and four of Wallace & Gromit are making their way to Xbox Live Arcade this week. The second episode was originally scheduled for release back in early September, but was delayed . All three have been available for months on PC, with the fourth episode being released back in July.

The lag between Xbox Live Arcade and PC release dates unfortunately doesn't mean you'll be getting any sort of discount. Each one costs 800 Microsoft Points ($10) on the Xbox Live Marketplace, whereas you can get each for $9 on PC or $35 for the entire season. It's not a huge discrepancy, but it's something worth noting if you have the option of playing the game on a computer.

Party Chat Rumored to be Limited in Modern Warfare 2

Infinity Ward may be taking steps to block one of the more commonly used methods of Xbox Live multiplayer cheating, according to a post on NeoGAF. It shows off a blurry screenshot (right), which reads: "This multiplayer session requires that you be in the game chat channel. If you don't switch, you can't play. Switch to the game chat channel now?" The implication, obviously, is that at least some of the multiplayer game types won't let you have private chats with your buddies. This is solidly in rumor territory for now, but it's a move that makes sense for the game.

It's bound to cause some complaints among those who just legitimately like talking to their friends, but the Party Chat feature has also been used by some savvy players to continue talking strategy when the game would mute them. A dead player, for example, could give away the location of the enemy that just killed him without waiting to respawn. Given how ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward, Xbox

Modern Warfare 2 is barely over a week away, but if you'd rather dump some more time into its predecessor, then today's new Xbox Live "Deal of the Week" is for you. The "Variety Map Pack" for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is currently 50 percent off on the Xbox Live Marketplace, which brings the cost down from $10 (800 Microsoft points) to just $5 (400 Microsoft points).

This four-map bundle includes the following multiplayer arenas: "Creek," "Chinatown," "Broadcast," and "Killhouse." Assuming you haven't already purchased them -- or received them for free with the "Game of the Year" edition of Modern Warfare -- then this is a bargain you probably won't want to pass up. Just be sure to download the maps before next Monday, when there'll be a new "Deal of the Week."

Microsoft Performs a Mass Xbox Live Account Banning

So some of you out there in the past day or two may have came home from work or school, turned on your precious Xbox 360 only to find a screen telling you that you have been banned from Xbox Live. You know exactly why you were banned as well! You dirty pirate!

Microsoft announced that they had just recently banned a small percentage of consoles that have been modified to play pirated game discs.

Hit the break to find out what a Microsoft spokesperson had to say about it.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Microsoft, Xbox, Xbox 360

Dog Buys Microsoft Points

According to a broadcast on reliable, non-biased news channel Fox News, a dog owned by a Virgina couple purchased $62 worth of Microsoft Points. According to the pair, the dog got its paws on an Xbox controller and managed to purchase 5,000 points while the couple slept.
Personal experience: When he was about a year old, my child purchased an episode of Lost I had already seen. He just hit the green button and was able to select and confirm the purchase. I think this is done on purpose by Microsoft because they figure this will happen occasionally... but I'm a conspiracy theorist.
As for a dog buying points, I'm a little dubious. It seems like the series of button-presses needed to turn on an Xbox and buy points couldn't be accomplished by anything but a super-intelligent wonder dog, like Lassie or Beverly Hills Chihuahua. But one thing is clear, If this story is true, it proves that dogs like the Xbox where cats like the PS3. I think this is fairly accurate. As for who ...

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Microsoft, Xbox

Splinter Cell Remaining Xbox 360 Exclusive For The Time Being

The Splinter Cell franchise has long been associated with the Xbox, though the original games eventually made their way to the PlayStation 2 and GameCube. This generation though, it appears that the franchise will remain on the Xbox 360 for the time being.

Asked whether Splinter Cell will eventually make its way back to other consoles, Ubisoft Toronto and Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat told Gaming Union , "Until further notice [the franchise is staying on Xbox 360]. However, I'm only the one making the games, you should talk to the people in Paris [for a final answer]."

Microsoft has long been known for their timed exclusives, ensuring that certain titles will automatically be associated with the Xbox 360. It would not be shocking if that turned out to be the case for Splinter Cell: Conviction, but for now, the series is an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Find more top gaming news, videos, and blogs on GamerBlips: Gaming, Splinter Cell, Xbox 360, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube
