Breaking: 1UP acquired by UGO, EGM is officially no more
Destructoid —
... issue. All jokes aside, EGM was one of the last great gaming magazines, and while it's not shocking to see the publication come to an end, it's still an unpleasant sight to witness. As for the 1UP acquisition business, we're already getting word on some of the casualties, namely the 1UP Show. I have always been a supporter of the show and I can safely say that it will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to all of those who are now out of a job. [Via Gamasutra]

Blue's News —
Gamasutra has word that UGO has purchased Ziff Davis' 1Up division, a move that has been rumored for a while now , and true to other rumors, print magazine EGM is not part of the deal, and is discontinued following the January, 2009 issue. They also have word that some 30 layoffs immediately followed the deal, and the article offers proud quotes from UGO high command, as well as a copy of an internal Ziff Davis email announcing the move and outlining plans for the future. For the record, UGO places the advertising on this website.

I know my take on this story is probably the least professional you'll read, but beyond the facts are all the people this effects, a far reaching circle of people. My heart goes out to everyone at EGM. Thank you for everything, and for making me who I am today. Know that these past 20 years have been a golden age in gaming, and EGM will be revered for years to come.

... Not strictly MMO-related - but it seems Ziff Davis is jettisoning some weight. The company has sold 1-Up.com to UGO and killed off long-running vid mag Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM). If you have a copy of the Jan. 2009 issue you may want to hang onto it -it’s now the final periodical. ...
Game Over!
MMOG Nation —
Less than a year ago, I fervently wanted to work for 1up and Ziff Davis. Writing for a team that included folks like James “Milky” Mielke, Ryan Scott, Jeff Green, Shawn Elliot … right around the time I was thinking about leaving Slashdot, that would have been the bees knees. I even sat down with Sam Kennedy during GDC last year to talk to him about possibilities in the SFO area. This is the part where I say I’m ultimately glad I didn’t get hired. While Ziff-Davis CEO Jason Young’s message to his company — including current 1UP Network staff — today, along with coordinated press ...
EGM :(
Tiny Cartridge —
... Electronic Gaming Monthly is being shut down following the sale of 1UP to UGO. I keep trying to think of a way to say this, but I don’t want to talk about ‘condolences’ or ‘sympathies’ or whatever, because that sounds too much like someone died, so I’ll say it crassly: to our friends at EGM/1UP, this is totally shitty, and I hope you guys weather the shittiness okay. ...
UGO Acquires 1UP, EGM Closes
Ripten Video Game Blog —
... huge fan of the 1UP Network and EGM, it was strange to find out about this news. The January 2009 issue of EGM (which is in stores now) will be the last issue of the print magazine.
And what makes things even worse is that the buyout has caused a lay-off of 30 Ziff-Davis employees, many of them very well-known journalists, including James Mielke and Shane Bettenhausen. Very sad news indeed about the lay-offs and I wish the ones let go good luck in their futures.

... Things quickly went downhill from there. Gamasutra received a copy of an internal memo confirming what we suspected would happen all along. Electronic Gaming Monthly, one of the longest running gaming publications, was getting the ax. That’s not the end of it. Gone, baby, gone: 1up sold, EGM killed, staff promptly fired
Ars Technica - Opposable Thumbs —
... 1up would, "stand beside UGO as a flagship brand." A few hours later, though, it was revealed that this was far from the truth, as Ziff Davis seemed intent on thoroughly gutting its online publications before it changed hands. Even though Ziff Davis CEO Jason Young claimed via an internal e-mail sent to his employees shortly after the sale was announced that, "many of our employees will travel with this business and become part of the UGO team," it seems that this was not to be. Gamasutra received some inside information that, at roughly the same time, a large percentage of ...

Or least it wasn't making the kind of money that Ziff-Davis needed to keep the network and all of its sister websites up and running. Rumors had been swirling for years that Ziff-Davis was in financial trouble, but nothing ever came of them. In fact, many just believed it was the print magazines that would take the fall. And they did, but as we now know, the online outlets would not be spared. Word dropped yesterday , but the aftershocks are still resonating in game journalism circles. ...
