My coworker Christian Nutt did a very nice and rather lengthy interview with Arc System works around TGS time, which is finally up. Pretty neat stuff in there about their place in the industry, their techniques, and their staff. Note that they also use the technique of creating 3D models for the animations and then making 2D sprites from there.
