During the presentation today, I heard that game software sales for home console video game machines in Japan have been slowing down. As I interviewed with several people, they say it costs them easily more than 1 billion yen in order to develop a PS3 or an Xbox 360 software, and in terms of the ...

Nintendo following the ‘natural flow’ of HD formatting
GoNintendo — ... TV programs are now shifting to HD, moving to HD appears to me a natural flow. - Genyo Takeda (General Manager, Integrated Research & Development Division) I have no doubt that Nintendo’s next console will be HD, but I don’t know if the Wii will get an HD version. You never know what Nintendo is going to do with their hardware revisions. I never expected the DSi LL, so I guess a Wii HD isn’t out of the question! Link

Miyamoto gives his thoughts on HD, discusses lagging software sales in Japan
GoNintendo — ... of a Zelda game were about 500,000, there was a case that global sales could reach around 5 million units in the past. In case of Mario, the global sales can be about 4 times larger than that of the Japan sales. So, if we want to, I believe the Japanese companies are still in a position to make games that can be accepted by the overseas markets. There may also be the issues within the companies about how the managers and the developers try to approach the game creations. Link

Iwata says the Nintendo 64 was a pain in the ass to work with, but Nintendo has learned their lesson
GoNintendo — ... the hardware people can make the platform which gives the least amount of hardship to software engineers. I would like to believe that he will keep this spirit for any future products. - Satoru Iwata Now we know why most Nintendo 64 games ended up looking like ass. The damn machine was a pain to work with! That’s why we see easy development on Cube and Wii. A very hard a costly lesson learned, but an important one at that. Link

Iwata talks software success, third party importance
GoNintendo — ... is the point in asking how we market the software. In terms of our relationship with the third party partners, that aspect is becoming increasingly important. - Satoru Iwata I’m glad to see Iwata mention the marketing importance of games. Some titles need a unique style of marketing to get the attention of the consumer. Professor Layton is a key example. That Lisa Kudrow commercial really gave the franchise a much-needed boost. Link

Hatano, Iwata discuss the importance of third party relationships for promotion, future success
GoNintendo — ... results. - Shinji Hatano (General Manager, Marketing Division) In that regard, I anticipate the relationship between software makers and Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer to change from now. In regard to the relationship, I often discuss with Mr. Hatano lately that we cannot foresee the future by saying, “It must be like this because it used to be that way in the past.” It is time we have to invent new ways. - Iwata Link

Nintendo wants to expand Dragon Quest sales in North America/Europe, believes it deserves to sell better
GoNintendo — ... agreement, and we will decide the details from now. - Shinji Hatano (General Manager, Marketing Division) It may not be the type of game for me, but I can respect that the franchise deserves a lot of credit. Final Fantasy had a huge breakthrough moment in the states with Final Fantasy VII, and I’m sure Dragon Quest could have that same moment as well. I just don’t know that it will be the 9th installment to make that happen. Link

Iwata discusses the importance of long-tail sellers, says they can’t create sure-fire hits 100% of the time
GoNintendo — ... our business in 2011. Of course, the fact that we were unable to put long tails to the software we had launched in late 2008 was what we regret and we would like to make efforts not to let it happen once again. - Satoru Iwata Looks like Iwata is really upset with Wii Music and Animal Crossing: City Folk sales. Keep in mind, but of those titles sold over a million units. It goes to show just how big Nintendo expects their titles to be! Link

Nintendo makes a business of turning unexpected ideas into big hits, says Iwata
GoNintendo — ... the arsenals for the next fiscal year and, right now, we must think about the year after, it was my real feeling. It is not that we do not have a means to reinvigorate our sales from now. Please at least understand this point. - Satoru Iwata You really can’t argue with that logic. Nintendo definitely does take some unique ideas and turn them into multi-million sellers. I guess they have a good eye for untapped market potential! Link

Iwata can’t understand why people think Nintendo has lost its edge, doesn’t believe Nintendo is competing with Apple
GoNintendo — ... that some of you who have listened to my presentation were able to understand our position. - Satoru Iwata I think we can all see some similarities between Nintendo’s hardware and the products that Apple creates, but I believe the similarities stop there. I’m also glad to see Nintendo firing back at those that complain about Nintendo losing its edge. It may have shifted some focus, but I don’t think the company lost its edge. Link

Nintendo might be considering hybrid HD/SD console
Joystiq — In a voluminous response to an investor question about moving to support high-definition output, Nintendo executives laid out their current thoughts on how and when to make such a move in their consoles. Of course, these thoughts shouldn't be taken as a definite indicator of Nintendo's plans, but they might suggest where the company could be headed in the next generation. And if these statements do reflect future events, Nintendo's next console will be HD-capable, but won't require that standard for every game. ...

Nintendo Talks About Its (Possible) HD Future [Nintendo]
Kotaku — ... example, we have to ask ourselves if HD is really necessary to develop Wii Fit. Won't HD be better for the games like Pikmin? The developers should choose the most appropriate graphical format depending on the software they make." The full response is an intimidating wall of text, from Takeda, Miyamoto and Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, one that may be designed to confuse rather than inform. Nintendo’s Mixed HD Messages
Edge Online - Interactive Entertainment Today — ... HD and SD However, we have not come to the stage where we can announce which is the most appropriate means. Since an increasing number of the TV sets at home around the world are becoming HD today, it will be natural for a machine to be able to generate graphics that people will be accustomed to see on HD televisions. Since the ordinary TV programmes are now shifting to HD, moving to HD appears to me a natural flow. I believe that we should take the most appropriate balance," he added . "We are not too much concerned about if the technology itself is the state-of-the-art or ...

Tomodachi Collection To Over Three Years To Make
Siliconera — ... , made with a scaled down DS interface, in Tomodachi Collection by feeding them and giving them presents. Miis can sort of talk too with synthesized voices.   It took Nintendo over three years to develop Tomodachi Collection . “We are developing one product after another, and we are aiming to make each one of them an unexpected hit. Otherwise, we would not have spent more than 3 years developing Tomodachi Collection ,” said Satoru Iwata during an investors Q&A session .  Tomodachi Collection was a breakout success, but not every game ( Wii Music says hi?) can be as ...
