offline play isn't going anywhere
Anyway Games — Apparently, almost half of the gamers with an account on Xbox Live don't pay for a Gold membership (which would give them access to online multiplayer). This makes me even more certain that online play and multiplayer are not, as they are sometimes touted to be, the future of gaming. They are merely options, with offline play and single-player games remaining very popular. We can assume that many 360 gamers want to play online but either will not / cannot pay for it or they don't have enough free time to justify the expense. However, we can also assume that many gamers pay ...

It's Good to Be Gold... On Xbox Live, That Is
Co-Optimus — ... On to the news, then.  Xbox Live is a great service, but it is, after all, the only "pay to play" service among the big three.  I'm glad to pay my $30 to get just over a year of excellent service, and it appears I'm not alone.  The Seattle Tech Report reveals that just over half of Xbox Live users were Gold members (doh, maybe I should have used that other pic).  This was before the NXE hit last fall, too, so those numbers have likely gone up.  ...

Microsoft Document Reveals Over Half of Xbox Live Users Are Gold Members
GameDaily BIZ Features Feed — Microsoft does not typically provide a breakdown of its paying vs. non-paying Xbox Live members, but an internal document recently obtained by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reveals that over half of the global Xbox Live base does indeed pay for the online service. The figures date back to February 2008 and only cover Microsoft's internal projections through June, meaning they do not include the positive impact the launch of the New Xbox Experience may have had. The document shows that last February 56 percent of worldwide Xbox Live members paid an annual, three-month or ...

Comparing Playstation Network and Xbox Live, revenue is what matters
The Cut Scene - Video Game Blog by Variety — ... EXCEPT... A little more than half of XBL members pay for the service. Without knowing how long they have paid for, and under what plans, it's tough to  estimate with any precision how much revenue that has generated for Microsoft. But it's safe to guess it's well into the hundreds of millions. ...

It seems strange to me that DLC always takes the form of permanent content... always as objects, rather than events. In the case of MMOs, it would be hard to charge for events after so many years of including that service in the subscription package. But I'm surprised games like Call of Duty 4 ...
