... Like its Japanese release, Monster Hunter 3 will not use the dreaded friend codes when it arrives in the states next year. Capcom’s Community Specialist Shawn Baxter confirmed the news earlier today, although he did not say if there will be any fees involved. In Japan, players must pay weekly or monthly in order to connect online. It is also undecided at this point if the title will be utilizing WiiSpeak. Thanks to Jay for the news tip! Once again, Monster Hunter 3 will not feature friend codes
GoNintendo —
... Community Specialist Shawn Baxter has said that Monster Hunter 3 players in North America (and most likely, Europe) will be connecting to Capcom’s servers to play online, instead of going through Nintendo. This circumvents the need for friend codes. You’ll be able to access a friend list online, as well as many other features when playing.
Still undetermined is the matter of online fees while playing. Capcom is yet to make a final decision.

The other part isn't necessarily bad news, but it could be in the future: Capcom still hasn't decided whether to use the pay-for-play model found ...

Monster Hunter giving Wii friend codes the chop in the US

... Anyway, grind-heavy RPGs like the upcoming Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii really thrive in the multiplayer, a feature hetherto missing in Western releases. It's certainly possible to play Monster Hunter alone, but you can forget about having a chance at those god-tier loots. Luckily, North American players will soon have the opportunity to grind and monster hunt with their friends to their heart's desire: Capcom community specialist Shawn Baxter has confirmed that, like it's Japanese counterpart, the American version of Monster Hunter Tri will be ditching ...
