December NPD: Slowdown
Joystiq [Nintendo] — ... It's not surprising to see that hardware sales rose significantly in December, but what is surprising is the comparatively small progress made by the Wii -- only a 5% increase from November, compared to some big gains for the competition. People who are paid a lot more than us predicted the Wii would smash the ...

NPD: PC Game Sales Fall 14% in 2008
GameDaily BIZ Features Feed — While the console video game market has been soaring (as demonstrated by the just released NPD 2008 totals ), PC game sales aren't so hot from a retail perspective, that is. The NPD Group has revealed to GameDaily BIZ that PC games totaled just $701 million in 2008, which is down 14 percent from 2007. It's important to keep in mind, however, that this NPD data concerns retail data only and does not include sales of digitally downloaded games, micro-transactions, online subscriptions, etc. The NPD Group recently started paying more attention to online revenue with its ...

PC Game Sales: The Mysterious 14%
Rock, Paper, Shotgun — ... , the figure suggests the PC has fallen in sharp contrast to the soaring figures for console sales. December NPD: More like DSember
Joystiq [Nintendo] — ... Michael Pachter predicted "around 3 million" Wii consoles sold in the US in December. Right company, right ridiculously high number -- wrong console. According to the NPD, the DS Lite sold a record-breaking 3.04 million units in December, the most any ...

Wii Held Back by Supply Constraints in December, Analysts say
GameDaily BIZ Features Feed — While the Wii sold through a very impressive 2.15 million units in the U.S. during December , this sales performance was only slightly higher than the 2.04 million units sold in November. A number of analysts thought December Wii sales would be significantly higher. EEDAR's Jesse Divnich commented, "These Wii figures are not any indication that is demand slowing down. The Nintendo Wii is going through supply just as quick as they have before and these numbers merely reflect the large disparity between supply and demand. We still believe the Nintendo Wii would have sold north ...

PS3 in Holiday '08 'A Case Study on How to Hurt a Brand' – UBS
GameDaily BIZ Features Feed — UBS analyst Ben Schachter has issued his post- NPD sales report. He noted that although December got off to a slow start, its final two weeks were very strong and made up for it. Also, while there has been talk of softness in the music game category, Schachter said that "the music genre, led by Guitar Hero , significantly reaccelerated y/y growth in December vs. November driven by higher ASP's of the full band kits," adding that "concerns around Guitar Hero were overblown." Schachter was particularly disappointed by Sony. While the PS3's unit sales were up sequentially ...

Nintendo to Raise Wii and DS Sales Targets, says Pachter
GameDaily BIZ Features Feed — In advance of Nintendo's third quarter earnings report this Thursday, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has issued a preview note predicting that the company will lower its earnings per share guidance for the full fiscal year, thanks to a much stronger Yen against the Dollar and Euro. As was evident in the NPD December totals , Nintendo's hardware sales momentum remains as strong as ever. Pachter believes the company will raise its full-year sales targets for Wii from 27.5 million units to 28.5 million; he also thinks the DS sales target (including the new DSi) ...

Rock Band May Have 5,000 Songs This Year, says MTV
GameDaily BIZ Features Feed — ... the Rock Band music store, but this would really up the ante in the battle of the bands. As it stands now, Activision's Guitar Hero has fewer than 100 songs available for sale and has sold an average of just one track per user. Red Octane does intend to finally offer new music on a weekly basis this year as well, but how many songs Guitar Hero will ultimately have by the end of 2009 is unclear. Music games certainly made their presence felt in 2008, helping to boost sales in a record $21 billion year for the U.S. game industry . That said, for Steve Schnur, EA's worldwide ...

ESA: 2008 Game Sales Dominated by Family-Friendly Titles
GameDaily BIZ Features Feed — Following up on the recent news from The NPD Group that the U.S. video game industry raked in a record $21 billion in 2008 , the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has noted that family-friendly video games were actually the main driver of sales. Sure, some of the best selling titles like GTA IV and Gears of War 2 are rated "Mature," but games rated "Everyone 10+" and lower accounted for over half of all sales (45.3% rated "E" and 12.1% rated "E10+"). ESA said "Mature" games made up only 15.9 percent of the market, while games rated "Teen" accounted for 26.7 ...
