Videogame 'racism' to be tackled by proposed NY bill
Destructoid —
... In yet another instance of politicians pretending to be tough on shallow issues just to make themselves look better, Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright has proposed a new bill in New York aimed at restricting the sale of games with "racist stereotypes" and oh-so naughty language in them. ...
NY Bill Seeks To Shield Children From Racist Sterotyping In Games [Law And Order]
Kotaku —
... this a redundant sort of bill? You don't get many games that portray young black men as gang bangers coming out with T for Teen ratings. Besides, who decides what a stereotype is? Does the game B-Boy fall under this law because it depicts minorities as break dancers? It's too general. Probably too general to pass. According to Game Politics, Wright tried to pass a similar bill in 2007, which failed. Poor guy. Bill Summary - A01474 [New York Assembly via Game Politics]

... Wright presumably wants to keep out of kids hands, this is most likely the case: kids are already prohibited from buying them. The intent of this legislation is certainly admirable, and it's good to see someone care about the touchy subject of race in games. But Wright seems woefully out of touch with what he's trying to stomp out, and sadly enough, he doesn't seem to be alone. New York's legislators seem to have a knack for redundancy when it comes to anti-game legislation. As GamePolitics points out, last year they passed a law that required that game packages show ratings ...

... actions toward a specific group of persons. - A01474, submitted by Assemblyman Keith L.T. Wright There was a bill much like this one that came about in 2007, and that bill failed to pass. We cannot have the ratings of the ESRB undermined by bills like this. If a game is rated Mature, than people under the age of 17 cannot have it. If there is a game that features some foul language but still manages a Teen rating, than the appropriately aged children should be able to purchase. Self-Serving NY Politician Advances Yet Another Game Bill

... stereotypes, while certainly something one could protest, aren't likely to be found in, say, Animal Crossing: City Folk. Gang violence and its ilk are typically found, Assemblyman Wright, on games that would receive a "stronger" rating in any event. Unless there's a cache of games somewhere that lacks any adult or violent content yet still manages to be profane and/or racially stereotyped.

... It's a freedom of speech issue and people that do not agree with the content don't have to buy the game. No one is forcing people to buy these games. It's probably a good idea for parents to actually pay attention to what their kids are playing and watching.
Personally, I grew up on violent video games and hardcore gangster rap, yet I'm a perfectly well-adjusted individual. Nice try, Assemblyman Wright. Game hating is so old news anyway.

The goal of the law is to, "[prohibit] the sale to minors of certain rated video games containing a rating that reflects content of various degrees of profanity, racist stereotypes or derogatory language, and/or actions toward a specific group of ...
