New York passes bill to stop texting, gaming while driving
GoNintendo —
... law was put into effect over in Hawaii? Well it looks like New York is going to be the next state to adopt it. That is, if Gov. David Paterson signs it into law.
Texting, or gaming while driving could soon cost you $150. That would be the fine you’d have to shell out if your caught for doing such a heinous act. Once again I wonder, how in the world will an officer be able to determine that you were texting/playing a game when you speed by them?

NY State proposing ban on gaming while driving

... erase your game saves. Okay, we made that up. Offenders actually get a $150 fine. The new law (much like Hawaii's) doesn't just apply to games and, should it pass, will make a number of activities on your phone (text, surf the web, hold it up and look at it) illegal to do while driving. Sure, it has everyone's safety in mind, but we really think the government is crazy if it expects us to pull over and park every time we try to level up our Pidgey. New York state bans videogames… while driving
That VideoGame Blog —
... Guess what? A new bill that senate just passed means you might even get an additional $150 fine for playing a videogame while driving. The bill, which was passed by a strong majority, also spells doom to those who like to text message or browse the web when at the wheel. It’s a secondary offense, which means you have to have been pulled over for something else first, and lose an extra $150. It still has yet to get approval from Governor Patterson, but if/when he does, the law will go into effect this November. Tuck ‘em away and be ...
New York Outlaws Video Games — for Drivers, Anyway [Law]

... on the DS, my guess is he'll consider you're driving carelessly, pull you over for that, and then slap you with driving-while-gaming. So it's not like you can flout this so long as you're buckled up, doing the speed limit and have all tail lights intact. But if so, it kind of raises the question why this law is necessary in the first place. When I start my own state legislature, we are going to ban driving while making belgian waffles. Just putting that out there now. NY State Bans Texting, Gaming, Surfing While Driving [GamePolitics]
