Report: Valve's Gabe Newell Disses DRM
When it comes to DRM, it seems that Valve president Gabe Newell is one of those in the game biz who wears a white hat. That is to say, he espouses a reasonable approach, one that is not a de facto screwing of game consumers. In an e-mail to a gamer by the name of Paul Reisinger (posted on ...

Gabe Doesn't Like DRM Strategies
Evil Avatar - News Items — ... Thanks GamePolitics. Proof that Valve is king.

Valve's Newell calls DRM strategies 'dumb'
Destructoid — ... that Valve discourages other publishers and developers from using “broken DRM offerings,” but added that there is a “groundswell to abandon [these] approaches.” This e-mail is a little catty towards EA, specifically because Newell was addressing the consumer's apprehension of EA’s DRM protection scheme and it crossing over to Left 4 Dead. Of course, Newell said that EA is merely a partner, not necessarily Valve’s new grand overlord. [via Game Politics]

Gabe Newell: Most DRM Plans Are "Dumb"
The Escapist : Latest News — ... are just dumb. The goal should be to create greater value for customers through service value (make it easy for me to play my games whenever and wherever I want to), not by decreasing the value of a product (maybe I'll be able to play my game and maybe I won't)." He is hoping that he can "discourage other developers and publishes from using the broken DRM offerings," and believes he is succeeding due to "a groundswell to abandon those approaches." Gabe Newell says DRM is dumb
That VideoGame Blog — ... I know, I know, another DRM topic. Are we beating a dead horse? I don’t think so, it’s a fairly important and controversial issue, and when people like Valve president Gabe Newell speak, we listen. It seems that game gods are more approachable than we suspected. In what I’m sure is a very rare happening, Newell responded to a direct email sent by a concerned gamer about Valve’s involvement with EA, a notorious pusher of the evil DRM scheme, SecuRom. In Newell’s response, he explains, “Around the world we have a number of distribution partners ...

Newell To Fan - DRM Strategies Are Dumb [Drm]
Kotaku — ... to a fan who had contacted Valve about fears that they would be using SecuROM to lock down Left 4 Dead, Newell replied, "As far as DRM goes, most DRM strategies are just dumb. The goal should be to create greater value for customers through service value [...] not by decreasing the value of a product. We really really discourage other developers and publishes from using the broken DRM offerings, and in general there is a groundswell to abandon those approaches." Newell: Most DRM "Dumb"
Blue's News — ... has a quote from Valve's Gabe Newell from a response to a question about DRM. Here's the good part: "As far as DRM goes, most DRM strategies are just dumb. The goal should be to create greater value for customers through service value (make it easy for me to play my games whenever and wherever I want to), not by decreasing the value of a product (maybe I'll be able to play my game and maybe I won't)." Shocker: Valve's Gabe Newell says most DRM is 'dumb'
Joystiq — ... no equivocation; no hesitation. DRM=dumb. Ah, but notice that qualifier: "most." Of course, Valve's very own Steam client is rife with DRM which Newell puts this way: "The goal should be to create greater value for customers through service value (make it easy for me to play my games whenever and wherever I want to)." When's the last time you heard someone complain about Steam's DRM? And when was the last time you pirated a game over Steam? Bill's in the mail, folks.
