Nintendo turned down for ‘Wii Remote’ trademark
GoNintendo — ... Patent and Trademark Office has shot down a Nintendo trademark attempt. Nintendo was hoping that they could get the term ‘Wii Remote’ trademarked, but the USPTO says that they can’t do that. Why have they been blocked from the trademark? The USPTO says that the term ‘remote’ is too generic to actually trademark. We know the deal with the Wiimote/Weemote issue, so that trademark isn’t an option. Nintendo can still get Wii Remote trademarked, but they’d have a lot of convincing to do. Link This entry was posted on Monday, December 1st, 2008 at 2:20 pm and is filed under ...

No, Nintendo, You Are Not Allowed To Patent The Term "Wii Remote" [Nintendo]
Kotaku — ... being theirs and all. But last week, a letter arrived at Nintendo HQ. The sender? The United States Patent Office. Their response? "No dice". Why? Because the word "remote" is too common to be trademarked. Can't own a word that the world already uses, guys. Seems somebody at Nintendo ticked the wrong box, and they'll now have to go back and try again, this time with the realisation they can only trademark the the name "Wii Remote", not both words individually. Nintendo Rebuffed on Attempts to Trademark “Wii Remote”
www.GamesAreEvil.com — ... It looks as if Nintendo of America is looked to remedy this situation, attempting to apply for a trademark on the aforementioned term back in March of this year.  Unfortunately for Reggie and company, GamePolitics.com is reporting that the application for the exclusive right to the term has been suspended.  Apparently the term is far too generic, because “remote” is used interchangeably with numerous devices that are already available on the market. ...

U.S. Patent Office Suspends 'Wii Remote' Trademark
G4 TV - TheFeed — ... in March 2008. Nintendo still has a chance to obtain the trademark, but they would have to "disclaim" possession of the term remote, unless used in Wii Remote. Someone else in Florida, called Fobis Technologies, owns the rights to Weemote. Nintendo and Fobis previously tried to negotiate a deal, but nothing ever came of that (to possibly trademark Wiimote, unofficial term for the Wii controller). Source
