"I had Steam but I had the problem that my internet provider could not work with it so I couldn't use the games I bought," he said. Half-Life 2 Not Really "Episodic" After All
The Escapist : Latest News —
Valve marketing guy Doug Lombardi says the developer may have chosen the wrong word when it described the follow-ups to Half-Life 2 as "episodes." Ever get annoyed by the fact that Valve seems to take longer to make an "episode" than most developers take to make an entire game? Lombardi says it's because they're not really episodes at all, they're just shorter games. "The notion of the word 'episode' conjures up this idea of television where you get something new every week," he said in an interview with CVG . "And people say, 'We thought that episodic meant we ...

The Valve Sting: Tricking Hackers With Fake Job Interviews
The Escapist : Latest News —
Remember a few years back when the pre-release source code for Valve's long-awaited Half-Life 2 ended up on BitTorrent? It turns out the developer cooked up an elaborate sting in conjunction with the FBI that came this close to nailing the culprit. Back in 2003, Valve's internal network was breached by a German hacker, ultimately resulting in the theft and dissemination of the source code for Half-Life 2 , which at that point was still more than a year from release. It was a full-on debacle for Valve, not only because the source for one of the most ...

Valve Patches Left 4 Dead Hacks On 360
The Escapist : Latest News —
Valve has issued a patch for the Xbox 360 version of Left 4 Dead which puts a halt to the recently-reported cheating that has plagued the game. Reports surfaced yesterday that enterprising gamers had figured out how to enable cheats in the Xbox 360 version of the hit multiplayer zombie slaughterfest, allowing people to perform a wide range of abnormal behaviors including deleting in-game objects and spawning enemies at will. One user reported being surrounded by 30 Witches and two Tanks in a safe house immediately after joining a game as part of an ...

Valve Implements New TF2 Server Scoring
The Escapist : Latest News —
Valve has announced a new scoring system for Team Fortress 2 servers that it hopes will help improve the "player experience" by weeding out the bad apples. A good Team Fortress 2 server is a bit like a good auto mechanic: Finding either can be tricky. Valve has been considering ways to make the process easier for "a while now" and has finally settled on a remarkably simple method of rating servers that won't penalize games with custom rules and isn't susceptible to "lies" from the servers themselves. "After kicking around some proposals, we came up with a simple ...

Left 4 Dead: A Box Art Retrospective
The Escapist : Latest News —
Ever think about what makes really good game box art? Of course you don't, but Valve does and as a new entry on the Left 4 Dead blog shows, a great cover design takes a lot of work. Making a great game doesn't mean much if people don't buy it and with the huge number of new titles hitting the shelves every week, standing out from the crowd is vital. Covers have to be eye-catching and they have to "sell" the game quickly, or at least generate enough interest that prospective customers will flip over to the back to see what's going on. Some boxes do it better than others but ...

Valve Says PS3 Complexity Hinders Game Development
The Escapist : Latest News —
If you've been wondering why Valve doesn't seem terribly interested in developing games for the PlayStation 3 , designer Tom Leonard has a very simple explanation: It's just too damn complicated. Valve has made a lot of great games over the years, first for the PC and more recently for the Xbox 360 . The PlayStation 3, on the other hand, hasn't seen much love from Gabe and the gang. The reason, says Tom Leonard, who worked as a programmer on Thief: The Dark Project and System Shock 2 before coming to Valve, is simple: The complexity of the ...

Valve Explains Lack of PlayStation 3 Support
The Escapist : Latest News —
Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi says the studio's lack of interest in the PlayStation 3 is primarily a matter of choice and that it won't actively support the console until it can assemble a dedicated PS3 team. Valve and the PlayStation 3 are like oil and water: They hate each other's guts. That might be overstating it a bit but there's no question that while Valve enthusiastically moved from its PC roots to support the Xbox 360 , it hasn't done much to embrace the Sony console. As far back as 2007, Valve honcho Gabe Newell said the PS3 was a " waste ...

Valve Considering "Cross-Play" Between Left 4 Dead and L4D2
The Escapist : Latest News —
Valve is looking at the possibility of implementing cross-play between Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 and says that mods created for the first game should run fine in the sequel with just "very minor amounts of work." The uproar over Valve's announcement of Left 4 Dead 2 at E3 is old news by now. Among them, obviously, was Depeche Mode, which gave the developer wide-ranging permission to use its recordings, likeness and fuchsia-toned duds in the game. He didn't reveal how, or even if, the band or its members would appear elsewhere in the game, but I'll be surprised if they don't turn up somewhere. Will gaming ever offer you a real moral choice?
Technology: Games blog | guardian.co.uk —
... Or is it all simply a strategic in-game choice? Ok, the vast majority of games have little in the way of moral choices. Do you get – or even want? - the chance to stop bombarding insurgents from your copter in Modern Warfare? Not a chance. But some games at least try. Bioshock offered you the chance to harvest or rescue those Little Sisters. Fable 2 let you cause havoc in Albion. But are these really moral choices? Valve writer Chet Faliszek thinks not. ... the upcoming zombie shooter Left 4 Dead 2 . The first game was ridiculously violent and the addition of melee weapons like axes and chainsaws is only going to up that ante. That, in fact, seemed to be the Board's biggest concern: The "close-in attacks" the weapons allow, and the splatter, decapitations, dismemberment, skeletal bits and gore they cause, are simply too extreme (and freakin' awesome) for young gamers to handle. Valve , in its wisdom, also submitted an edited version of the game that cut much of the violence and bloodshed; that version was ...

More controversy is brewing surrounding the release of Modern Warfare 2. Apparently the game forces you to install Valve 's Steamworks with the game itself. That's gotten Direct2Drive a little upset. Direct2Drive directly competes with Valve for the digital sale of games hence the problem. D2D told Kotaku that, "We don't believe games should force the user to install a Trojan Horse."Before you freak out and say that D2D just called Steam a Trojan virus, keep in mind there's a greater literary reference behind that.
