Wankers: World of Goo has a 90% piracy rate
Destructoid —
Good old gamers, always looking after the little man. Indie game World of Goo, a title made by just two people, is suffering from an amazing 90% piracy rate. Designer Ron Carmel has confirmed reports on this issue, stating the figures are "about right." World of Goo's creator has stated that he's seen torrent sites with 500 seeders and 300 leechers. On the plus side, he also has a few emails from people who said they pirated the game, but then went ahead and bought it. These emails are not exactly frequent, however. "We're doing ok, though. We're getting good sales through WiiWare, ...
World Of Goo Suffers From 90% Piracy Rate
GayGamer.net —
... I usually refrain from ranting too much on these pages, but after seeing an article on Joystiq about the 90% piracy rate on World of Goo, I felt the need. This amazing game, created by the brilliant Kyle Gabler and Ron Carmel is one of the finest examples of independent game making out there. When it came time to release the game, Gabler and Carmel made the decision to release it with no DRM in tact. They trusted that gamers would support them for this decision and it would seem that perhaps they were wrong. ...

However he seems to have a good attitude about the whole situation, saying, "I know it sounds like a gruesome number, but we like to tell ourselves 'those people wouldn't have bought it anyway'. The good news is, some have mailed us, telling us they bought the game because they first pirated it and liked it. Hurray for (some) humanity!" ... clearly a little dinted. Carmel dropped this stat bomb into the Rock Paper Shotgun forums and went on to confirm to Joystiq that he had seen "500 seeders and 300 leechers" torrenting the game. It is hard to say exactly what this means - surely many of the downloads would not have planned to buy the game anyway and Carmel does admit to receiving mail from " a very small percentage" of pirates who DID buy the game - but all the same... very poor indeed. ... had in mind. According to Joystiq, the creators of World of Goo report the title has a massive, 90 percent piracy rate. The vast majority of the work on the addictive, physics-based puzzle game was done by game designers Ron Carmel and Kyle Gabler - the two core members of 2d Boy. Apparently, the game, which is available for PC and WiiWare, has popped up on torrent sites, Carmel told Joystiq. He confirmed the incredibly high piracy rate has reached about 90 percent for the game. "We're doing ok, though," said Carmel. "We're getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam, and ...

... posting. Joystiq contacted Carmel yesterday to confirm the piracy estimate, and he said the figure is “about right.” “We’re doing okay, though. We’re getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam and our Web site. Not going bankrupt just yet.” In good faith, 2D Boy released the PC and Mac versions of World of Goo without digital rights management, controversial software that aims to prevent piracy. The so-abbreviated DRM has been the focus of debate since the release of EA’s DRM-laden Spore in September. World of Goo costs $15 on Wii through the Wii Shop Channel. It is available ...

... , spoke to Joystiq about the stunning piracy rates for World of Goo . Carmel recounted seeing torrents with upwards of "500 seeders and 300 leechers" and receiving emails from some who bought the title after pirating it, but flat-out said that "the piracy rate was about 90" percent. "We're doing ok, though," Carmel said in stride. "We're getting good sales through WiiWare, Steam, and our website. Not going bankrupt just yet." It's very depressing to hear this, considering that World of Goo is an independent production; this is the kind of story that makes big-name ...

The Case for Piracy
DESIGNER NOTES —
... were by legitimate customers. This ratio compares favorably (or is that unfavorably?) with the 90% piracy rate reported by the developers of World of Goo. I don’t want to comment on the viability of various DRM schemes, but - needless to say - unless a game is server-based (WoW, EVE, EverQuest), piracy is a bracing reality for game developers. However, I have an unscientific theory about the root of the problem: ...
